We have a new contribution to Passover this year from Morris Eson, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the State University of New York at Albany and long-time member of Temple Israel in Albany. Together with Devora Heckelman, a member of the United Synagogue Commission on Education and con to several Solomon Schecter Day Schools, and Fay Silton, Education Director at Temple Israel, Morris Eson has produced a valuable pedagogical tool designed not only to enliven th Passover seder but to serve as a supplementary text for middle school and secondary school students in their study of the Book of Exodus.
The Haggadah contains all the basic elements of the traditional Passover service plus valuable commentary and historical information based on the writings of Judaic scholars and Eson's own reflections. According to the author, many of the segments are designed to be read aloud by participants, serving to maintain a high level of interest. He notes also that the commentary draws from a wide variety of sources - historical, scientific, literary, as well as from his own imagination.
Besides offering helpful explanations of the origins of Passover rituals, the new Haggadah provides many opportunities for children and youth to participate. Notes throughout the text are drawn from both ancient and modern sources, serving as a bridge between the different generations at the Seder table as well as a bride from the present to the past. The author also includes suggestions of discussion topics to enhance conversions during the meal (e.g. "Our people's Fascination, with Language.). Mixing the traditional with the innovative, this Haggadah will appeal to those looking for a Passover study experience.

Adding a new perspective to the passover story

We have used Mr. Eson's Haggadah as an additional source for the past two seders. Each year we have chosen new readings from this fascinating Haggadah. He brings up historical aspects that we had never thought of before or seen in our traditional Haggadahs. Two examples: page 34 "Our People's Fascination with Language" - he discusses the language at the time of the Egyptian slavery, as well as the modern archaeological findings relating to the hebrew alphabet; Page 80 ..another section that stirred our imaginations and inspired great discussion. Here he has created 9 imaginary vignettes of Israelite characters. Readings from Mr. Eson's Passover Haggadah have become the highlight of our seders and have stimulated wonderful discussions. I highly recommend it for those who enjoy looking for new historical aspects to the telling of the passover story.

A Wonderful Find!

Despite trying new haggadahs, it's always been difficult to have two seders every year be continually interesting and a new learning experience for our children, ourselves, and our guests. It also becomes expensive to buy new sets of haggadahs. So it was a wonderful find to discover A PASSOVER HAGGADAH FOR ALL GENERATIONS - A MODERN MIDRASH. It keeps the traditional Hebrew while it brings new insights and commentaries for lively discussion. Dividing the commentaries into a four year cycle helps us viscerally understand that we continue to learn from the tradition, though our family has to be self-disciplined not to use all the commentaries in any given year. We also like the format, lots of white space and easy to read. This is a hagaddah to use and to keep using.

"Guaranteed Success"

Are you a marathon or recreational runner, a person concerned with general physical fitness, or a competitive athlete? Perhaps you are an individual who pushes him/herself in order to feel capable and strong in ALL areas of your life. If so, "Your Performing Edge - The Complete Guide To Success And Fulfillment In Sports And Life," by JoAnn Dahlkoetter, Ph.D. is written for you.
As a mental health practitioner and current trainer for my first marathon this Fall (Marine Corp Marathon, Washington, DC), it is with pleasure that I review Dr. Dahlkoetter's fine book. The importance of developing sound mental strategies for successful running cannot be overstated. As a 53 year old non-runner, I initially harbored some doubts about my ability to take on the physical challenges of a marathon. Having completed over half of the training, I am now confident that I have the physical strength to attain my goal. What I did not realize was that SUCCESSFUL running is also very much a state of mind, and in order to achieve EXCELLENCE as a runner, one must also acquire sound mental training skills. Being a mentally strong competitor -Your Performing Edge

For the past 10 years I have been a fairly competitive Masters and Seniors(50 age group) runner in The PA Series of USATF in both Road Racing and Cross Country. As I have gotten older I find that the mental aspects of running, racing and training are even more important than the physical aspects. You can be in great shape physically, but if you are not mentally strong your performance will suffer. Dr JoAnn Dahlkoetter's book, Your Performing Edge helps you to see in very easy steps how to become mentally tuff, how to focus on your goal. I have learned more in a few weeks about being mentally focused to compete than I have in many years of running and racing. JoAnn shows you step by step how to become a mentally stronger, more focused competitor in sports and in life. I would highly recommend Dr Dahlkoetter's book to any athlete of any sport, or anyone who wants to compete better at life in general. I wish I had this knowledge 10 years ago, I would definitely be a stronger and faster runner and a better person.

Your Performing Edge- A Superb Realistic Guide

I have been a Nationally ranked Senior Distance Runner and search eagerly for books on the subject of Running. Dr. Dahlkoetter has written a superb guide that has already helped my running and added value to my non-running life as well. I was most impressed with how realistic it is and how many great mental exercises are explained. Definitely a must read for anyone, whether they compete or not. I am the Training Director of the Big Sur Marathon and coordinate a series of training sessions for first time and experienced Marathoners. Dr. Dahlkoetter's book is on the MUST READ list, right along with Galloway and Sheehan.

I found this CCDA book to be quite exceptional. It covered all of the areas that are on the Cisco CCDA Certification. The ideas, protocols and terminology are well explained and the scenario Case Studies at the end are simply AWESOME! The practice tests on CD are great too with a lot of the concepts found on the exam itself. I spent about three weeks reading and evaluating the book and CD. Get this book and get certified, it's that simple.

About the Author
Mark A. Poplar is an accomplished network engineer with extensive experience designing networks, installing and configuring routers, switches, servers, and other Cisco and Microsoft products. A senior engineer at an Irvine California Startup, he has provided technical support and troubleshooting services to more than a hundred mid-sized corporations. He holds eight professional certifications, including Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT), Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE), Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), and Certified Netware Administrator (CNA), among others. A graduate of California State University and Kent State University, he has published two books, Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching Exam Prep, and Compita's Network + Exam Prep for Certification Insider Press. He has also contributed to Microsoft Certified Professional magazine.

Very good book with a few SERIOUS problems

I recently took and passed CCNA. I then bought this book and started my study for CCDA. Today I took and passed CCDA but I don't think it would have been possible if I hadn't supplemented my studies with other books. This book has a great structure with pop quizes and chapter reviews that really make sure you are learning your stuff as you go through. However its coverage of certain areas is non-existant (cisco's product line) and its coverage of other areas is very brief considering their complexity (newtworking protocols). If you're weak in either of these two areas you NEED another book as well. CCNA will help with the protocols, but even with CCNA you need to research the cisco product line and understand when different products should be used (for case study questions). The other major problem with this book is its tests questions. Many questions on the quizzer are fill in the blank. If you enter a correct answer and fail to capitilze even one word correctly the quizzer counts it as wrong. Combined with the fact that is impossible to know what exact wording the quizzer is looking for makes the scoring of the quizzer absolutely useless. In conclusion I really liked this book and it really helped me quickly prepare for and pass CCDA. If you don't know the cisco product line, are weak in networking protocols, or need an accurate measure of your knowledge through quiz questions be prepared to get another book to supplement your knowledge.

Great guide for designing networks

I got this book expecting an easy way to pass the CCDA exam, what I got was a whole lot more. This book is excellent for anyone who ever needs to plan, analyze or install a computer network. It covers not only all the technical information that was on the exam (very strong on WAN technologies) but also the practical application of how to determine the best network for your needs, then test and implement accordingly. It has step by step instructions for planning, implementing and testing. The author also covers troubleshooting not only from a technical standpoint but also from a client needs analysis perspective. I did pass the CCDA exam, although there was nothing too easy about it, all the information was covered in this book and I came away with confidence that I can plan and troubleshoot intelligently any network from a high level. I now apply a lot of this information in my daily work. If this is your career goal, get the book and you'll won't be disappointed.

My choice for the CCDA exam and a great choice it is.

I went looking for material for CCDA and stumbled across this book. What I found was 400 plus pages of information making the passing of the CCDA exam easier and the learning were enjoyable.
Covering the 640-441 exam the book is broken down into 6 parts covering 11 chapters. Starting off with the OSI model and then on to design concepts and models. You then move right into identifying the customers needs and quickly follow up with hardware for LANS and WANS.
There is excellent coverage of addressing along with protocols, management and testing and a very good coverage of the IOS. The author includes 5 case studies to further help you understand the concepts of the book.
The book comes with a cd-rom with over 200 questions and the install was a snap. The book and cd are setup for a classroom situation and the software can be taken as a straight forward exam or in the adaptive mode.

You can track your results as well as a history of your success. Overall the material is excellent and the money I spent was well worth it.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR....

and buy this cd! I have been using this disc for three nights in a row with much success. I typically have trouble going to sleep and then staying asleep. The first track I tried was Deep Sleep (4) and I was out before the program finished. Track 3 Go to Sleep was effective but seems more of an exercise program you would commit to. Finally track 2 Restorative Sleep provide just that. So far I have slept sound and awakened refreshed and renewed. You can go to [...] if you can't get them through Amazon. It is a purchase worth making.

Hypnosis is as natural as breathing. You naturally make contact with your subconscious mind all the time. ~Victoria Wizell

Victoria Wizell is a Certified Master Hypnotherapist with a beautiful voice and a positive attitude to life. She has studied personal growth concepts and has incorporated her knowledge into a variety of meditations.

She helps you develop a skill that will allow you to relax. I listened to this CD at night, although I was surprised to read it should be listened to at the same time very morning for 30 days. It seems Track 2 could be used for the morning if you enjoy going back to sleep after the alarm goes off. Track 3 and 4 could be used when you want to fall asleep and stay asleep for a longer time.

Track 1: Introduction - An explanation of how to use this CD.

Track 2: Restorative Sleep - Music plays in the background as Victoria provides thoughts to lead you into a calm state so you can rest peacefully. Use this track when you want to wake up after the session.

Track 3: Go To Sleep - As I'm trying to type here, I'm feeling very, very sleepy. It is almost impossible to listen to this without wanting to climb into bed. This is the track that helped me sink into my warm bed and drift into a happy sleep. Victoria encourages you to breathe deeply and relax completely. Slowly you sink into a wonderful "trance" which just seems to mean sinking into relaxation.

Track 4: Deep Sleep - Deep breathing exercises. I was asleep before this track began, but if you need more time to relax, this track focuses on your heart beating calmly and your cells healing as energy flows through your body in this new restful state.

The first few times I tried to review this CD, I fell into a blissful sleep. Apparently the results can be seen in as little as one day if you listen to this at night. I'd highly recommend this CD for the evening, especially if you have been having trouble sleeping or find you are not sleeping as deeply as you could be and feel tired during the day.

I'm also listening to The Stress Management Workshop. Victoria Wizell also has a Self-Hypnosis Step-by-Step CD ROM with a 30-minute Hypnosis Session and testimonials.

Not so happy with the results....

I've been using the CD for about two weeks now and so far no success. It does tell you to give it time to work by using it morning and night for several weeks. My chief complaint is that there's no instruction in the case about which tracks to use, how long each track is, etc... I also find the warning about copy right protection at the beginning of the CD annoying. If you set the CD to repeat (and since I'm never asleep by the end I do) it takes you out of the rhythm of trying to relax. The first track is supposed to put you to sleep and wake you up. That wasn't really my goal. I want to sleep. That's why I bought this. If you skip to what you think is the second track it turns out it's really the part of track 1 that wakes you back up. I haven't given up yet and I wasn't expecting a quick solution, but I'm starting to wonder if it will work.
