This IS Afghanistan in a nutshell

A great guide for anyone who wants background information on a volatile country ... This book is a well-rounded assembly of facts, timelines, definitions, and general information that covers an array of topics from the origin of Muslim influence in Afghanistan, to the current state of the Taliban rule and its affects on its people. We also get background information on Osama Bin Laden leading up to and following his declaration of war on the United States. Overall, I give this book a very high rating. It both summarized what I've already learned about Afghanistan..., and has also given me a broader understanding of the region and its history.

I found the book to be a useful overview of Afghanistan history in under 100 pages. Because any book is slightly outdated when it is published, some figures might be better downloaded from the internet, such as current population estimates. The historical background was very helpful in understanding recent events, and trends over the years.

Good overview

This 2004 book gives you a good overview of this enigmatic country that no one yet has been able to conquer let alone change through wars and interventions.

I picked this up at a library book sale due to the title--Afghanistan in a Nutshell. I didn't want to read a lengthy tome on the country, but wanted some background. And since the book was written in 2004 and it is now 2013, obviously some things have changed.

What you will find in the book are brief rundowns of the facts and figures, people and polcies, background of the country, ancient history and modern history. You'll find outdated information on the Taliban and bin Laden, but still interesting to read (and easy too since this is a nutshell remember). There is also a section on foreign relations with Pakistan and the US. You probably could skip that since nothing is as it was! The issues section discuses opium, women and Al Qaeda. There is a section on culture and religion which will give you an understanding of the militant approach to Islamic law (combined with the section on history). There are maps, an illustration and some nice timelines.

One of the sections I found most interesting was the one on Issues. I knew that Afghanistan grew heroin, but didn't realize that in 2004 they supplied 86 percent of the world's heroin. I was interested enough to look up some figures that are more current--and in May of 2012, Reuters stated that the country supplied some 90 percent of the world's opium (from which heroin is made) and much of the money/profit lines the pockets of the insurgents at around $100 million a year and the traffickers earn over a billion dollars. Scary stuff!

If you want to take a quick look at Afghanistan--this book is a nice place to start even as outdated as some of the information is!

Savvy Woman's Guide to Moving and Calling Repairmen

I am shocked by the good reviews this book is getting. I made this purchase thinking I'd learn how to "care for, improve and maintain" my home. Instead I found a bunch of non-specific reasons why I need to maintain my home and nothing about how to do so. What exactly are these reviewers referring back to? There is no information here that is complete enough to be useful. I am willing to bet that I never need to open this book again.

Anyone who has ever moved already knows most of the helpful hints contained in the first 1/3 of this book. We're talking about simple things like: change your address with the post office; find out how to get from your new house to your office; call the electric company and get the power turned on...

The real content is in middle third of the book. That's the section that's supposed to be about maintaining your home. Here's the gist: Houses have plumbing systems, call a plumber. Houses have electric systems, call an electrician. (Unless you want to change the color of your light switch, apparently as women we're all supposed to get giddy at the thought of light switches in different colors.) The repairs chapter is concentrated on which professionals to call in. Roof trouble requires a roofer... There are a whopping 2 paragraphs about doing repairs yourself. In these paragraphs Ms. Werner recommends purchasing a book about home maintenance!!! The seasonal and yearly checkup chapters are the only redeeming part of the whole book, although they are still lacking. These consist basically of a list of places to check for structural damage.

The final 1/3 of the book contains more generalized information that about emergency planning, picking schools for your kids and canceling your mail when you go on vacation. Again, this is not really relevant to home improvement, and is mostly targeted at people lacking common sense or people who have made long distance moves. This is followed up by a few pages about remodeling. Guess what: you're supposed to call a contractor to do you're remodeling.

Curious Person's Guide to Home Buying and Owning

This book is for people who think BEFORE they act and like Curious George, like to know a little about how things work with out being overwhelmed with technical details. People who buy this book AFTER they move into a home (for rent or sale) will find that they wished they had bought the book BEFORE the move. The author underestimates both the usefulness of her book and the wide audience (my Dad needed this book as well as myself before my first apartment). I think this would be a good read prior to searching for a home as buyers tend to get caught up in the emotions of the buy. This practical book brings you down to earth and makes you focus on basic items like the safety of home.

The index alone functions as a checklist that is worth the purchase price of the book as it lists the basics to consider in an existing home or apartment. Specific details change too rapidly to rely on absolutes, but this book gives you subjects to begin thinking about. I did find myself wishing the author had placed the 6 major categories (Before you Move, Know Your House, Those Inevitable Repairs, Emergencies, Community, & Growing Your Home) in between the 22 chapters in the index, but that is really picky - i.e. I'm someone who seldom gives a 5 star rating, not even to my own work!

Useful for ANY Homeowner--or Renter

Kitty Werner has done something amazing here: she has taken pretty much everything that anyone needs to know before owning or renting a home, and found an easy way to explain fairly technical concepts to people with no technical knowledge. And she manages not to sound patronizing, even when explaining real basic stuff that most of us take for granted--because she doesn't assume you have prior experience.
Her advice on practical matters from insurance to chimney cleaning to what to do in an emergency could save the reader thousands of dollars--and save lives.
The title is really too narrow for this broad and useful book. It's useful to both owners and renters, to both men and women. In fact, it would be the ideal present to buy a graduating college student just going out on his or her own--I sure wish I had such a book when I got my first apartment, and again when I got my first house. Don't let the book's somewhat peculiar layout choices get in the way. This book will benefit anyone who ever has to manage any aspect of finding and maintaining a place to live. Following Kitty's savvy advice will lower your bills, lower your stress level, and improve the quality of your life. I will ask the author if I can excerpt a chapter on my Frugal and Fashionable Living webzine.

I recently tried two recipes for a chocolate banana cake and Maple Candy Corn [similar to Poppycock snack]. Both were easy to make and came out wonderfully. The recipes are clear and easy to follow, photos mouthwatering.

Stock archive photos, minimal text

A disappointing collection of photographs, most of them previously published. The text is limited to one page "chapter" introductions, with no new information and what is there is often misleading. Subtitled "100th Aniversary Collection", it is an obvious attempt to cash in on the tourist trade. Most captions are so brief as to be useless. The same photo is printed twice, once identified as at Bennett, the other time as at White Pass Summit. A group of passengers photographed on the rear platform of a passenger car is captioned as taken on a "caboose". Several photos of passengers riding flat cars are captioned as riding "flatbeds". The switchback at Dead Horse Gulch is identified as "near the summit" while the later cantilever bridge on adjacent pages is never explained as the switchback replacement. The only strengths of this book are the quotes from contemporary newspapers and the coated paper which improves some, but! not all, of the previously published photos. If you are looking for a good history or new information on the White Pass, look elsewhere.

If you manage projects - GET THIS BOOK!

I was searching through bookstores and Amazon.com for a good book on how to best use Microsoft Project. There are a ton of books out there that teach you Microsoft Project, and I own two of them (Mastering Project 2000 and Project 2000 Step-by-Step). These books are great at describing features, but you can also get that information with the Help files.
For anyone who has used Microsoft Project can tell you, there are several ways to set up the application, some of which is helpful, and some of which can have you very frustrated.
What I wanted was not a description of all the features, but how to best set up Microsoft Project. I stumbled on this book on Amazon.com, and it proclaimed to be the book I needed.
I was not disappointed. The author draws upon his years of experience in developing and managing with Microsoft Project and leading the Microsoft Project department at the International Institue for Learning (IIL), upon the lessons from the many other instructors, and from his students. Being able to learn from others mistakes and tips is worth the price of the book alone.
The author's stated objectives in setting up Microsoft Project are to:
- allow the schedule to be dynamic, so that when reality comes, as it will do several times during a project, then the schedule will dynamically adjust to reflect the future
- need as little care and feeding throughout the life of the project as possible, so you can spend your time managing the project, not in front of a computer trying to update the status and plan the future (when you don't have the time).
The author walks you through step-by-step on how to set up Microsoft Project to achieve those two goals. He discusses:
- the best settings for the project's properties
- how to properly establish a work breakdown structure (WBS) and describe its elements in the project tasks
- what variables need to be visible on the Gantt data entry chart to watch how Microsoft Project will alter variables
- a complete discussion of the Scheduling Formula
- descriptions of Fixed Work, Fixed Duration, and Fixed Resources, and the concept that a task does not remain as one of these, but should be changed to control how Microsoft Project will react to replanning
- when to use constraints, deadlines, and milestones, and how to add constraints so you aren't held responsible for the impact of other organizations not fulfilling their commitments
- assigning responsibilities

- tracking progress (the six basic situations and how to indicate them) and updating projections and assignments (through workgroup features or manually).
The author also describes three "hazards" with Microsoft Project, namely facility and machinery costs, gross work time vs. dedicated work time, and the use of the Effort Driven tag.
Facility and machinery costs are poorly handled by Microsoft Project, and the author describes some workarounds.
The author does describe the difference between gross work time and dedicated work time, and that planning usually is done with dedicated work time, but the difference between the two are often not correctly accounted for. Recent findings suggest that worker efficiency is not better than 65%, so this difference can be enormous. The author describes two ways of handling it when he describes the subject, and then describes a third method much later in the book (and says that method is popular). Unfortunately he does not describe the advantages and disadvantages with the approaches, to include cost implications. I would highly suggest that you only plan in gross work time, knowing the inefficiencies. By the way, Microsoft doesn't make this very easy either as the efficiencies of individual resources against a task is not an included field for the assignments.
The author describes that there are problems with using the Effort Driven tag, and gives great advice on how to deal with it (always turn it off if the task is not Constant Work - but watch it as Microsoft Project can and will change it on you). His description of how Microsoft Project treats the Effort Driven tag, however, was not complete. The Effort Driven tag attempts to hold Work constant in addition to the variable that you declare as fixed. Since the Scheduling Formula only has three variables, trying to hold two of them constant while changing the third obviously causes some confusion. I don't have room to describe how Microsoft Project will react when you set this tag, but it's not always "Effort Driven". Just keep it turned off!
There is some room for improvements in this book:
- Earned Value Management was not mentioned (except in the glossary). The author should either explain that he doesn't find it useful, or explain how he's used it productively
- The Index is weak for the volume of information included in the book
- The advantages and disadvantages of each of the approaches to hide management reserve in the schedule should be described
- There should be graphics showing how to set up constraints, milestones and deadlines, to include un-hidden management reserve
- There should be example one-page reports included
- Update for Microsoft Project 2002
Despite these shortcomings, you will not find another book that comes close to this on how to use Microsoft Project. If you manage projects with Microsoft Project (even if you use Project 2002), you should have this book on your desk (not your shelf).

Exceptional. Highly Recommended!!!

Thanks Eric. Right on. It is so refreshing to read a book written from the perspective of a PMAN instead of a book by a MS Project guru (which you probably are too). MS Project is a beast. You have helped to tame it by sharing your lessons learned from the real world. As I read this book many things are finally clicking (after years of just making due). Though the index is not a strong as I like, the very detailed and well-planned TOC seems to compensate. Not sure the secret to this, since I generally always use an Index instead of a TOC, but it works well in this book. Bottom line: Project Managers ... buy this book. Read it from cover to cover.

Great Project 2000 Reference

Thanks for this book. Well writen and easy to follow even for the non-professional project manager. I keep it right next to the computer so I can turn to it when I work on my amateurish, but necessary, system engineering schedules. I can only get better at Project 2000 using this book.

Excellent Manual at Bargain Price

'Tulips for American Gardens' by bulb retailers, Brent and Becky Heath is an excellent book on at least three counts, if you can get it for less than $10 and not at its list price of $24.95. The most important feature is the fact that it is all about tulips. There are no general facts which include daffodils, narcissus, corms, rhizomes, tubers, or other subterranean perennials. My practical experience says that tulips and daffodils require substantially different treatment, and this book tells all about tulips. The second special feature is the fact that the catalogue of tulip species and cultivars actually fits what I see in my favorite bulb dealer's catalogue. So many times, one sees no connection between cultivar names in texts and your favorite distributor. But, since virtually all tulips originate in Holland, everyone is pretty much working off the same page. The third virtue is that the book is dedicated to our own 'neighborhood', the planting zones of the United States.

While the book as printed is a bit pricy, it is a great source at discounted prices and there is nothing I needed to know which was not in here, most especially information on which cultivars naturalize well and which do not.

Tulips for American Gardens

I have heard Brent and Becky speak on a few occasions, and enjoyed the talks. When I heard they had a book out on Tulips I knew I had to get it. The book is jammed full of pictures. The best part is the book is set up with the tulips divided into their divisions. There are pictures of many Tulips in the division and a 4-5 line describing the plant. Also lots of cultural information is provided. Easy to use, fun to read.
