We wanted more info on the Alaska Klondike Goldrush and this book was great. The photos were astounding and were worth at least 1000 words. I only wish the format were bigger so one could see even more detail in the pictures. Just what we needed to answer questions about the goldrush after we returned from an Alaska cruise. ND

Although small, it gives a clear insight to the atrocious conditions, the folly and determination of the 'stampeders' in the Klondike during the great gold rush in 1898-1899. The text is very informative and overall it gave me a better insight to what they endured in the rush for wealth.

I love reading about the Klondike Gold Rush

I love reading about the Klondike Gold Rush. I know what it is like to function at -40, and to see pictures of greenhorns gong into an unknown hostile environment "not knowing what they were getting into" is a history lesson all should see. All should read the required gear that the gold rushers had to carry over the Chilkoot Pass. White was no easier, even though the gear was not carried on their back. This book does an excellent job of bringing these hardships to life. My dream (bucket list) is to hike and boat the Klondike Trail from Skagway to Dawson City.

As a father and stepfather, I read with some interest Ms. Taylor's book, My Whole Family. I found it to be not only informative but helpful in working through the difficulties a typical stepfamily faces. I was particularly impressed with the "hands on" activities that keeps a childs interest and at the same time, provides substantive issues for him and his "parents" to work through.I highly recommend this book for anyone who is faced with the sometimes difficult relationships that arise from a "blended" family.

David Scalise, JD is an award winning Business Law Professor at the University of San Francisco. This book is amazing...

The first time I took the SAT, I was quite disappointed with my score; I felt that the score did not reflect my skills or potential. I had not studied and I decided that I would take it again and go through an SAT course book beforehand. I picked this book and went through it, it was easy to understand and not boring or tedious. The examples helped me realize the mistakes I had made the first time and I felt much more confident on testing day (October 14, 2006). I received my scores on November 2nd, and not only did my whole score improve by 230 points, but I got a perfect 800 score on the math section! My writing score had improved by 80 points, my critical reading score had improved by 20, and my math score by 130 points. I spent the most time studying the math section, but I'm sure that if I had spent more time looking over the critical reading section, my critical reading score would have improved more. I highly recomend this book!

My daughter recently took the SAT and The SAT Advantage with Professor Dave really helped her prepare. She liked the book, and used it a lot. She did very well on the exam. I highly recommend it for other students. Professor Dave's conversational style was informative, yet entertaining. He covered all aspects of the material, and the book was a great asset. Way to go, Professor Dave!

Julius A. Karash, a business reporter for The Kansas City Star, covered the airline industry for The Star from 1990 to 1995, and for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram from 1983 to 1984. He is a 1976 journalism graduate of the University of Missouri and lives with his wife and daughter in Prairie Village, Kansas.

Rick Montgomery is the national correspondent for The Kansas City Star and has written on a variety of subjects since joining the staff in 1986. He co-authored the best-selling book "Kansas City: An American Story," which traces Kansas City's birth to present. He is a 1982 journalism graduate of Iowa State University and lives with his wife and two sons in Prairie Village, Kansas.

Where truth and fiction meet.....

If one enjoys being transported in time, to a rarely heard about place of unbelievable actions, deeds beyond reason, the incredible actual events of fifty years ago, then this book is a "must read"! Over 1000 Atomic Bombs were detonated in the name of the Cold War and National Security in the supposedly "uninhabited" area of the Nevada desert. These events, are central to the storyline of this book. The people who's lives were changed, forever, affected by these historic events, call themselfs Downwinders.... The story claims to be fiction, but the honesty and factuality of the description of events, which indeed happened as described, leaves the reader fascinated. It is a mystery plot, taking place in an around Las Vegas, Nevada. A murder triggers the events described and takes the reader on a journey where past and present events meet. The story is intriguing, active and very absorbing. A rancher and his niece, an attorney, a scientist, and various colorful charters make this a truly enjoyable and easy to follow book. Each character is pictured realistically, human in every sense, their actions are not contrived. The descriptions show a clear and deep understanding of the feelings and thoughts of the people who settled in the beautiful deserts of Utah and Nevada. The tale takes us litterally on a journey to Canyons of despair reminescent of the past, to the winding road of the present, and to the hope-filled halls of justice in the future. Given that this historical subject is still mostly hidden from the American public the writers should be highly commended for tackling it in such a truly enjoyable fashion.

Prepared to be entertained... and taught

Wow! Downwinders: An Atomic Tale, is really a tale. This is a thriller that easily could be a movie rivaling something like The Da Vinci Code. It has intrigue, bad guys, history, and great characters. It is also a sobering reminder of a dark page of American history... the above-ground testing of nuclear weapons in Nevada, the clans of one-breasted women, and the Cold War and its relics. For those from or knowledgeable about southern Utah, you will recognize life in the Mormon Belt.

Curtis Oberhansly and Dianne Nelson Oberhansly write well (you never know who wrote what... always an interesting twist of coauthored books). Catch this description:

"Trevor Mallory, a slight man standing five and a half feet, was in his mid-fifties, but he still had the energy of three. His astute gray eyes were shot through with flecks of black. They danced with curiosity and matched the color of his long hair bundled tight at the nape and running loosely past his shoulders" (p. 127). And this is a very minor character!

The story is great... exciting, intriguing, and unpredictable. It deserves a much wider readership. Rated PG-13, for adult themes.

This is a well researched fictional thriller about people living in Arizona, Utah and some neighbouring states during the 1950-1960 atomic bomb testing in Nevada. If you know any person living then in those areas, read this expose' concerning radiation fall-out and the connection to cancer patients. I did not have any luck at all

The book sounds so promising...well, out of 26 letters mailed out, asking for a note or photo congratulating my son on his Eagle rank, so far, 11 have come back, all with notes like"address unknown" or "does not exist"...this is a waste of my time and money; the book and the postage to deal with the requests...
I contacted the publisher about getting money back on the book and they laughed at me! It isn't their fault; "stars change their agents all the time; so it doesn't stay current and it isn't our fault"...
They advertise that they stand behind their sources..I say, don't waste your money on this!

Now in an updated edition for 2003, Contact Any Celebrity: Accurate Contact Information For Over 13,000 Celebrities And Public Figures compiled and edited by Jordan McAuley is a very straightforward, "user friendly" reference. From cover to cover, it presents nothing but a solid list of celebrity and public figure mailing addresses - surface mail addresses only, that is; no e-mail addresses or web sites. An excellent tool for autograph hunters and also charity fundraisers (as it is common practice to politely solicit celebrities for autographed items that can be auctioned to benefit a non-profit organization) Contact Any Celebrity will prove to be an invaluable resource.

Elyn Aviva has a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Princeton University; her dissertation topic was the modern-day pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago. She has traveled the Camino a number of times, including three times on foot. Elyn earned a Master of Divinity degree from Iliff School of Theology in 1997. When not traveling in Europe, Elyn lives in Boulder, Colorado, with her husband, Gary White. She continues to write and do research on sacred sites, spiritual quest, and pilgrimage. Going to Santiago...a must read!

This account of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, made in 1982, before the current resurgence, contains everything you need to know about history, architecture, myth and legend along the ancient route across northern Spain and more. It is a personal account, but one chock full of customs and lore, as well as facts and individual musings on the nature of pilgrimage and what drives a pilgrim to leave home and hearth to trek 500 miles to the medieval end of the world.
Elyn tells her story with humor and pathos and ask the reader to consider just what the pilgrimage route and the symbols contained therein might really mean for today's pilgrims. It is, after all, both an inner and outer journey.

"If we were religious, would it hurt less?"

The review heading is a quote from day 10, July 18, 1982 in Elyn Aviva's fascinating tapestry of trail journal and scholarly insight. This story was first published in 1989. The 2nd edition was published in 2001. Prior to the 2nd edition, the author walked the Camino again in 1997 and again in 2000.
The Camino in 1982 was a vastly different experience from the modern Camino, and for this reason the author has left the text of the body unchanged except for some editing. She has added an 18 page Introduction to the 2nd Edition where she describes some of the changes over the last twenty years and talks about the other pre Christian pilgrimage routes that some believe evolved into the Christian Camino.
I had never read the original edition, and really enjoyed the account of Elyn and her friend Bill's journey. They had never backpacked before, and started out carrying heavy packs, wearing new boots, and throughout the book I emphasized with the experience of new backpackers, gradually becoming fit. In 1982 there were few refugios compared to today, and frequently they slept under the open sky. The trail was poorly marked, sometimes non existent compared to today. Sometimes they had to hitch. Particularly in the earlier part of the trek, the local people did not look on pilgrims with favor.
Each day gets a section in the book, with a little map showing maybe a third of the entire Camino, with a little bracket showing the distance walked for the day. The first day has a similar map of the entire route - not a map for detailed info, but a simple line with place names. Day 1 starts in St. Jean Pied de Port and the book ends with Day 47 - leaving Santiago.
Anyone who has walked the Camino will appreciate this story, and anyone about to travel the route will benefit from the history included with the day to day narrative.
Modern day walkers - read this for background, but be sure to get the Confraternity of St. James The Camino Frances guide to take with you, as well as either John Brierley's guide or Davies and Cole's guide. Also, check the forums such as GoCamino and Santiagobis and websites such as backpack45.

I have read many books on the Camino De Santiago. The information on this book intrigued me enough to spend my money and purchase a copy. This book has been one of the hardest ones to get through. It is written as if two books were thrown together.

Con:
The personal portions of the book are painful to stomach as the author complains and whines ad nauseam, along with the endless references to the "authentic" Camino. From the beginning of the book to the end, the author whines, complains, does not believe in anything, has no real purpose for walking the Camino other than to say she did. Her only real focus is to make SURE she walks the "real" or "authentic" Camino. Very odd. The "real" Camino is the journey itself. I find myself skipping large portions of this book (the author's personal insights) as they do not add any value to the experience of reading it. I certainly don't imagine that walking 800 km is a fairy tale experience, however, an insightful book is much more profound then a journal full of rants like this one.

When you finally get to page 246 the author is suddenly MORE consumed with arriving at Santiago on August 22, then with walking the "authentic" Camino. So she takes not one but TWO taxi rides for 43 kilometers rationalizing that "...after all, the Camino is very long, and some parts of it were more authentic than others. Besides, we had run short on time." The Certificate is given to people who actually walk at least the last 100 km. Apparently she rationalizes that one, by insisting on getting her certificate. The cherry on top is her elitist attitude upon arrival in Santiago, her expectations that she was a "real" pilgrim because she walked (most of the way) and expected special treatment. The church, however, treats all visitors the same, regardless of their mode of transportation. Her lack of patience with people I found surprising, with "we had no tolerance for petty bureaucracy any more." So she lost patience on the Camino? I doubt she had any before the Camino. I am saddened by her experience. Rather than walking with eyes and heart wide open she walked with an agenda clutched tightly in her fist.

Pro:
The historical interjections are interesting and well written. I think this book would have faired much better had the author written a book with that as the focus, and perhaps ended the book with a chapter on personal experience.

I do NOT recommend this book. There is nothing to be gained from reading it. I do, however, recommend spending your hard earned money on any one of the the following books: 'My Camino', 'Pilgrimage to the End of the World', 'Confessions of a Pilgrim', and 'The Camino'. Everyone of these are much more insightful and inspiring, let alone FAR more enjoyable to read.
