Although she won the esteem of the English settlers, she eventually became a thorn in the side of the newly formed colonial government. After ten years without pay for her diplomatic and interpretive services, she led her Creek tribesmen in a relentless march through the streets of Savannah to demand justice.

Mary Musgrove triumphed over savage discrimination, unimaginable personal adversity and an unrequited love for the founder of Georgia. As General Oglethorpe’s interpreter and emissary to the Indians, she smoothed the path to cooperation between the Creeks and the colonists, perhaps single-handedly insuring the survival of the colony of Georgia. Arguably the most important woman in the history of Georgia, Mary Musgrove guided the Creek nation through the treacherous waters of international intrigue during the dramatic conquest of a hemisphere.

A lynchpin figure of the burgeoning Georgia colony during the 1700s, Mary Musgrove applied her influence with Indian tribes to encourage the chiefs to meet with General Oglethorpe in the Savannah, leading to the peaceful establishment of an English colony in Indian territory. Yet despite being held in high regard by English settlers as surely as Native Americans, she became an antagonist of the newly formed colonial government. After ten years of serving as an unpaid diplomat and interpreter, she led her Creek tribesmen in a march through the streets of Savannah in search of justice. Wonderful

After losing myself thoroughly in this exciting adventure into Georgia's past, my only disappointment is in having to return to reality. The story of Mary Musgrove is one of strength and faith as we follow her amazing life. From her early youth with her mother's people, to her successful attempt to learn of and live within her English father's world. All who read this will, I'm sure join me in thanking Pamela Baur Mueller for saving such an important piece of history that was nearly lost to us all

A must read for early GA history and the role of Mary Musgrove.

I highly recommend this book for all ages. The author has a unique gift for placing the reader in the actual setting as she describes the daily life of Mary Musgrove including the good times as well as the dark days. At times I felt I was actually eavesdropping on Mary's most private conversations and her struggles. Excellent book!

Another Bartley Success!

I so enjoyed Colleen Bartley and John Pateman's Kid's Choice cookbook (as do all the little people in my life) that I was thrilled to find that Ms. Bartley has written another for adults. The layout is fantastic and easy to follow. I really appreciate the "chef's secret" tips as I am a novice cook and need all the help I can get. On the whole the ingredients are things that one would have on hand (no trips to the grocery store mispronouncing a French sounding ingredient as the produce boy stares at you as though you have two heads-it always turns out to be parsley anyway). There isn't a recipe I've tried that hasn't turned out wonderfully and tasted fabulous. The salmon strudel is to die for and the peanut butter cookies never last a day around here. All this being said I appreciate the low sugar, low fat as I am a big advocate of cutting sugar out of our diets. This cookbook makes that an easy delicious way to achieve that goal.

Debunking Orthodox Judaism : not for fundamentalists!

Having been raised in Orthodox Judaism I can credit most of his critic. Debunking Judaism has been such a taboo for decades that the only recent book that has a little bit of this is was Prof. Shahak's Jewish History, Jewish Religion. I had actually been waiting for a book like Hoffman's for years.
Readers will learn many things that are sprayed over many books difficult to find and that they would probably never get. Hoffman's has made the compilation nobody else dared to write. For example the talmudic interpretations of the passage over Noah's Son Ham and how they were used to justify slavery and racism of blacks.
What may anger even more Orthodox Jews and fundamentalist Christians is Hoffman's contention that Orthodox Judaism is in noway the religion of the Tanakh (Old Testament), but that its theology, structure, etc. are based on the Mishnah and the rabbis' interpretations of the Mishnah.
Actually one just has to read the introduction to Prof. Neusner's The Mishnah : A New Translation to see Hoffman's point vindicated, or other books by Prof. Neusner such as Rabbinic Judaism : Structure and System.
The only thing orthodox Judaism has in common with the religion of the Hebrews is the holy feasts. But this also Reform Judaism has, with the advantage that it does not have some the latter theological superstitions.
The bad point with this book is Hoffman's resentment against "Jews" -- he should rather speak of orthodox Jews. On the other hand I can understand the resentment he may feel when seeing his fellow Christians (the book is written for Christians, BTW, but I found this to be no problem) interpret the Old Testament in the "light" of the Talmud or believe that Orthodox Judaism is to be equated with the religion of the Old Testament.
All in all, a unique book filling in a big gap -- and I hope more books in the future will dare debunk orthodox Judaism. And a book that is religiously politically incorrect : not for the religious fundamentalists!

Controversial but highly enlightening

I got a first edition copy of this book direct from the publisher earlier this month and I was surprised and glad to see Amazon.com put it up on their site during banned books week. This is a controversial but highly enlightening book. Even though the author regards Judaism as a post-first century AD novelty and usurpation, he's pro-Jewish, he wants to free Jews from Judaism (and Christians from being chained to it). The book jacket says the author went to college in NY and worked in New York for the AP as a reporter. With a name like Hoffman and maybe being a New York native, I wonder if he's a Jew?
Issues of ethnicity and the predictable charges of hate aside, it's a great read for the massive scholarship and rare info. In a book of 144 pages there's a large amount of unusual information and quotations from rabbis and Israeli historians and professors that I've never encountered anywhere before.
The main idea is that Judaism is the religion of the Pharisees and that it's against not only Christ but the Old Testament too! He has reams of material from the Talmud and other holy books of Judaism showing that it's these works that take priority over the Bible and that they adapt and misinterpret the Bible so much that they end up blotting the Bible out.
The book takes Christians out of their sense of being step-children and puts them at the front and center as THE continuation of the Israelites (I Peter 2:9), contrary to Judaism and the "Khazars" (the author says the people we think of as being descendants of Abraham are really "Khazars" from east Europe). The section that prodded me the most is in a footnote on p. 97 analyzing the good fig tree and the evil fig tree (Matthew 21:19). It basically asks, "Who really are the grafted-on converts?" The answer surprised me!
We tend to think we have this topic down pat and then we divide up on opposite sides and then it's a stand-off going nowhere. But with this book there's a new angle introduced and hard to find facts. Christians and Jews with an open mind should read it because it solves a lot of problems. It lifted burdens off me and made me think from a new angle, which is quite a bit to get out of a book.

If you wish to understand why there exists so much illogic and capriciousness in public policy, and why there is such a nasty undercurrent in today's "entertainment," you must read "Judaism's Strange Gods." If you are a Christian, you must read "Judaism's Strange Gods." Using mainly Jewish sources, Mr. Hoffman reveals the basis of problematic Jewish attitudes and behavior. Almost all of today's Jews are adherents of a religion that would better be called "rabbinism." Rabbinic Judaism is not the religion of the Old Testament Israelites, but is a man-made belief system based on the Talmud and other associated man-made rules. Cleanly and beautifully written in the best tradition of logical exposition, "Judaism's Strange Gods" will lift confusion from your mind. Interested? You must read this book!

About the Author
Tess and Mark Szamatulski have owned their homebrew store, Maltose Express in Monroe, CT USA for over ten years. They are authors of the best selling homebrew recipe book, CLONEBREWS Homebrew Recipes for 150 Commercial Beers (Storey Books, 1998). They also write the monthly "Beer Style" column for Brew Your Own Magazine and numerous cover features and other articles. Mark and Tess teach homebrew classes, beer tasting and appreciation classes at local colleges. Mark is a certified beer judge. Many of the beers brewed from Beer Captured have won numerous ribbons and awards, and a few have won Brewer's Cup and have been brewed by commercial breweries and brewpubs.

Simply the BEST

I just came from the library last night and viewed over 10 different brewing books, including 4 recipe books. I get home today and my new Beer Captured came in the mail. WOW. What a book. If you're looking for the top of the line recipe book, then this is the one, without a doubt. I researched myself and this book blew away the others. After reading this book and going through a few recipes, I wanted to brew a batch right then and there. Instead, I drank a few! Wow. I see what the other review meant by the drool on the cover. This book will be used A LOT by me and any friends I loan it to. Way to go Mark and Tess!!! When is Beer Captured II coming out?????????? I CAN'T WAIT!
Don't let anyone fool you with other clone recipe books, this is THE one.

Very good book on the subject, get it.

By the authors of "Clone Brews" Beer Captured is also a book of copies of 150 commercially produced beers from around the world. I found this book to be an improvment over the Szmatulski's first effort in that with the book's new look you get a helpful hints section on each recipe along with serving suggestions. Divided into four sections pages 1-14 tell a lot about brewing (probably not quite enough for a complete novice), followed by pages 15-164, beer recipes, section three (165-174)has recipes for foods involving beer in them someplace (some sound very tasty. Part 4, pages 175-195,contains lists of mash guidelines, water mineral and modification charts, several other charts not given in most books that should really help in brewing something drinkable.

it hones in on the spiritual nature of humans. It hints at the merger between science and religion. The point view is unusua because it is from that of a scientist. It is a good beginning primer for those who are interested in the conmnection between the brain and the attainment of metaphysical abilities and how it works.

I bought this book after visiting the author's web site. I got some excellent information on how to develop my intution and how to "train" my body to react in a way that I can recognize the answers. I highly recommend this book for those who are looking for a way to develop your abilities without a lot of esoterical philosophy mixed in, This is straight forward and to the point!
