About the Author
Judith Hand earned her Ph.D. in biology from UCLA in animal behavior and primatology. After a Smithsonian Post-doctoral Fellow at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., she returned to UCLA as a research associate and lecturer. Her undergraduate major was in cultural anthropology. She worked as a technician in neurophysiology laboratories at UCLA and the Max Planck Institute, in Munich, Germany, and has written scientific papers on the subject of social conflict resolution. To research the historical novel Voice of the Goddess, Dr. Hand worked at the archeological museum on Crete and visited temple sites at Knossos, Phaestos, and Gournia. She interviewed the principal investigator of the Minoan excavation on Santorini (Thera) and visited museum and goddess sites in Turkey.

A work of vision grounded in science and human behavior

Simplistic look at one side of the creation-destruction paradigm

Creation and destruction are two sides of the same coin, and isolating destruction and trying to understand it alone is like trying to understand the world by studying it only by night and not by day, or trying to understand electricity by only looking at the negative charges. This book is incredibly simplistic in its understanding of this principle, and I expect mainly attractive to people with hidden, or not-so-hidden prejudices like the author's. Destruction is a necessary forerunner to creation, and history clearly shows that it is the destructive who are ultimately creative. Imagine the planet had only been populated by women in the kind of misty, feminine utopia envisaged by Judith Hand. The number of wars would have been far less in their history, but it would have been a long, peaceful existence in the stone age. No creation or destruction to disturb the status quo, no wars, but rather worryingly, a life expectancy of around 30 that eliminated far more than if wars had continued non-stop but creativity in medical technology had been imported from somewhere else (like the planet where all the men were living).

The wars that have taken place on earth have taken around 100 million lives, a figure which when analysed alone is shocking at showing man's destructivity. But when we consider that man's creative genius in medicine and food technology alone has resulted in a population double what it would have been, we see that man's creativity has saved the lives of around 3 BILLION, an enormous figure that doesn't even come into discussion here, but which is in fact a vital issue. It is awful to discuss human lives so simply in terms of figures, but it's a fact worth keeping in mind for those who see the world through feminist-coloured spectacles, and refuse to consider that destruction is all men are capable of. The mistake in this book is that the author takes all the marvelous products of men's creativity as just having naturally sprung out of nothing, having naturally evolved, and now women can make use of these wonders. Well, eliminate every man-made or man-invented wonder from the author's life, and ask her if man's destructivity has had more of an effect on her comfortable life, or man's creativity. Kill half of her friends and family, tell her she has just a few years to live, and see how she would have liked life in such a feminist utopia, bereft of male creativity. If she would still hold the same views, and so would the positive reviewers of this book, if we removed half of all the people they love from their lives, then I fully respect her and their positions. Those who would miss these people, however, should consider that the world consists of both light and dark, and those who concentrate on one side only will remain in the dark as far as understanding goes, much like the author and her fans.

This is an excellent compilation of studies and the author's insightful conclusions about power, war and peace, as seen through the actions of men and women, while the author questions the unavoidableness of war. It's not only a book of facts and conclusions; it's a damn good read.

About the Author
Prize winning author Lynda Lee Macken is a native New Yorker. Her articles have appeared in regional and national publications including THE MOUNTAIN ASTROLOGER and FATE magazines. Ms. Macken's story of her own ghostly encounter at Big Moose Lake in Upstate New York with Grace Brown, whose murder inspired Theodore Dreiser's AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY, was produced by UNSOLVED MYSTERIES. This is her second book of ghost stories.

Scary And Real!

"Adirondack Ghosts" is a fascinating series of shorts that is several steps above camp fire ghost stories, as the writer has actual testimonies from living people. Many of the stories are handed down from generation to generation. Others are taken straight from historic sites such as Fort Ticonderoga, the Lake Placid Club and various famous local mansions and estates.
Although most of the activities seem to revolve around poltergeist activity (objects being moved about, sometimes in sight of the visitor), many are true ghost sightings. Several employees of a restaurant (The Anvil in Fort Edward) experienced objects and noises until they actually witnessed the ghost standing in a doorway. An apparition appeared over the water near Pulpit Rock in Lake Placid several times until divers found a woman's body intact thirty years after she disappeared - at the very same spot (the temperature is frigid). The most harrowing is probably the author witnessing a ghostly apparition hovering over the waters of Big Moose Lake. Grace Brown was drowned there by her lover Chester Gillette in 1906. The story has been made into a novel ("An American Tragedy") and a film ("A Place In The Sun"). This chapter is full of accounts describing odd happenings, electrical appliances not working and many other ghost sightings by employees and guests.
For a relatively short book, there is a large variety of ghost stories ranging from old folklore to modern day terror. All are interesting, but it would have been great to know more about the history of these ghosts in some cases, such as the Grace Brown murder. However, these simply made me want to study more into the history on my own. I recommend you read this by candlelight.

I highly recommend this pamphlet-size book for anyone interested in the basic facts of the area's ghost stories. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because it leaves the reader wanting to learn more about the stories contained therein.

How This Book Came To Be: Some years ago, the Abenaki of northwestern Vermont staged a demonstration against the practices of certain contractors who were building homes on sites the Abenaki had identified as ancient burial grounds of their people. About a month after that demonstration, I happened to travel near the area in question. Along the way, I noticed a small group of people standing around a big yellow loader on a building lot that had been ripped up to dig a cellar hole. The loader's scoop, filled with sand, had been lifted to table height and people stood around it, not the usual work crew. Four of them: two men and two women. They looked at me with more than usual interest as I passed by. One of the women came over to my car and introduced herself as Donna Moody, the Repatriations Coordinator of the Western Abenaki. "This is where a builder started to dig up a graveyard," she said, "until we got a court order to stop him." They were now scooping up the disturbed soil and sifting through it, looking for the bones of their ancestors. I told her that I did not wish to intrude, but that I felt I had to stop and let them know what I was doing there. Donna immediately put me at ease and said that it was good that I was there; it was good that I could see what they were doing. Meanwhile, my little cocker spaniel, Buffie, climbed onto my lap and stuck her head out the window to say hello to Donna. It was love at first sight. After a long meeting and greeting, Donna looked at me smiling and said, "Do you know what the Abenaki say about dogs?" She told me the story. I drove off down the road and pulled off to the side and wrote this poem: What The Abenaki Say About Dogs. Wrote it right out. I sent a copy of it to Donna, along with another poem I called Sifters. These poems led to others over the years, and this book is the result of my regard for the Abenaki - their culture, their history, their place in contemporary society, and their traditional dwelling places in the mountains and especially along the shores of this great lake called Champlain. or as the Abenakis call it, The Sea Between. I do not pretend to speak for The People of the Dawn. They speak for themselves, with a great tradition of poets and singers and storytellers you can go to for their work. This book speaks of their interaction with the land and this great inland sea. I simply hope that here in this small volume I have done them justice. Dan Close, Underhill,Vermont, 2009

Exactly What I Needed

I am Abenaki, and last July the day I dreaded came to pass. Little Millie, who stayed by my side through my 13 year battle with cancer, made me laugh and protected me from home invaders, collapsed and died. I did proper ceremonies but was devastated. My cousin suggested I buy this book and read it. Mr. Close isn't Native, but his words comforted me like a spiritual elder. I have since shared the story with non-natives and each one expressed the hope that this story was true. Native or not, if you have ever lost a dog that is more special than any other dog, you need to read this work by Mr. Close.

Women write from the heart

Every once in a while a story comes along that captures your heart and opens your eyes to the real world. Ms Pedersen shows us that it's not all Wal-Mart and soccer games and renting your favorite movie on Friday night. The real world...the world of war is so much more.

You sit with countless mothers by the telephone as they squirm in anticipation of the 5-minute phone call from a son that may or may not happen. Or you grieve openly with a newlywed who wonders how she will survive without her true love, her soulmate. Like it or not, you are there. It's real. I saw a soldier last night at the grocery store. He was in another aisle across from me but I mouthed the words "thank you" and I knew he needed no further explanation. In humble gratitude, he saluted. I doubt I would have felt the pride, the overwhelming gratitude before reading her book. Thank you Ms Pedersen. God Bless all of you.

An Ultimate Sacrifice so Often Unacknowledged

"Women Write the War" is a collection of heartrending, brave and forthright letters written by women who are living the ultimate sacrifice. These are the mothers, wives, daughters and friends that have sent their loved ones off to war so we can sleep peacefully each night. Unless a person has a loved one defending our country it is truly impossible to understand what everyday life is like for these people. The logistical nightmare of juggling children, schedules and jobs to accommodate the missing link in their lives not to mention the 'real life story' on the battlefield told by the soldiers themselves. The daily news reporting one of the recent tragedies of war sends shivers through their bodies not knowing if the casualties may include their loved ones. Not even Hollywood could produce such compelling stories of the lives these people are living as relayed through these letters.

Bee Pedersen has opened my eyes and heart to a whole new level of honor, gratitude and respect for those who sacrifice much of their lives for our safety. I'm not a bumper sticker kinda gal, however, I'm now proudly sporting a yellow ribbon to help others remember our troops and Godspeed them home.

One Tough Critic-- and this moved me!

Often in our fast pace life, we fail to capture the meaning of what surrounds us, and what it means to have our freedom. Sometimes, we just simply forget or expect it to be there. Ms. Pedersen, helps us remember. As a tough critic and picky reader..... I was enlightening to read "truth" that brings you in and challenges ones' own reflection of life and who we are. Ms. Pedersen creatively captures the truth, the stories of what many of us face directly or indirectly ... and for even one moment, that important moment makes us reflect and appreciate the wonderful world we live in. You will enjoy the stories as they weave through experiences, emotions, and will acknowledge our fortune of what "freedom" really means! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. A must read!

memories come back

For researchers into personal computing, Allan has amassed a useful bibliography of key books and articles. He divides these into various lists. Where a list might be about the IBM PC, and another list is about Apple.

Just thumbing through the lists should bring back memories for some readers. You may well have read that book about the rise and fall of Steve Jobs at Apple. Which was written before his triumphant re-entry.

Or perhaps you remember Jerry Pournelle's musings in Byte magazine? Alas, that magazine is no longer with us in hardcopy form. Though Pournelle is still very much around. [And grumpy as usual!]
