About the Author
John Pierson/Jughead: was born, raised, and still resides in the greater Chicago area. He has written and performed for the internationally acclaimed Neo-Futurists in the show Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind for the last ten years. Prior to that he released a book of 15 full length plays called The Incomplete Philosophy of Hope And Nonthings. He is a founding member and guitarist of the punkrock band Screeching Weasel. Their 15 year legacy ended July 6th, 2001. Recently with his new band Even In Blackouts he has been touring internationally and has released three records.

A punk rock peak into the past of one of the most famous pop-punk band guitarists around!

Weasels in a Box is written in the second person and could be a huge dissuasion for your casual reader. I guess I could compare it to, in a weak way, people who are not accustomed to reading subtitles in a movie - it just maybe outside of the norm and too much work or distracting for someone to adjust to and enjoy.
As an avid reader I have read books in the second person and it's all about execution really. When most books are in first person or third, it does honestly require some adjusting to. I easily got into the grove with it and enjoyed my journey from the first to the last page.

Weasels in a Box is simply a must-read for Screeching Weasel fans and so as to not short change Jughead, it can easily be enjoyed by anyone who wants to read about the ongoings of a band trying to make it, dealings with record companies with their own (different) agendas, dealings with different band member personalities and journeys throughout the punk rock landscapes of yore.

It blends reality with fiction and I gotta say I loved trying to figure out who the bands were that were spoken about (whose names had been changed) and the people they encountered (whose names have also been changed).

It was written with so much personality and charm that it definitely has a high re-readability factor! So, it's a recommendation kids - please give it a shot if you are a fan of Screeching Weasel or hell, even if you're not, it was definitely worth the time.

Punk Fiction.

Finally, after being six years and several countries in the making, John 'Jughead' Pierson's novel about being in Screeching Weasel is finally here. The author places you in the head of the novel's kinda-reluctant-guitarist protagonist, JJ, allowing you to experience the joys and annoyances and insecurities and paranoias of being a Semi-Famous stringstroker in a seminal pop-punk band. And a fine, fun time it is too.

Anybody familiar with the history of Screeching Weasel will be able to read this work, and the situations in it, like, well, a book, from the band's early daze to their breakup to the Weasel/Jughead business and creative dynamic. To this end it's an indispensible book for anybody who likes the band or the author here. The text is poetic and laugh-out-loud-frequently witty as hell. My only problem was the sequences where Pierson was trying to writing in a more complex non-linear style, with timejumps and dollops of unexpected surreality, but overall the text was solid and interesting and well-written. If you're a fan of SW you'll love this book. If you're a fan of punk music in general and the DIY ethic you'll also love this book. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead litpunk, make your day!

A long long time ago... In a punk house a galaxy away

I wasn't around Chicago for the first days of Screeching Weasel, but I was around in 1988-89. I moved to Chicago from Sacramento 6 weeks after my high school graduation as an angry juvenile delinquent. I helped out with Roadkill Records, worked on zines, didn't spend enough time helping out with Underdog (one of my lifetime regrets) and spent a lot of time with Ben.

I enjoyed remembering mostly forgotten stuff from way back then and John's detail is amazing. I've been in small bands playing small tours and I've tagged along with better bands on longer tours. There's so much information that was true about touring then that was still true on my last tagalong with The Bananas in 2008. Most promoters aren't good and most bands sound the same, but that's not why you read this book.

I did a lot of volunteer work at a place in Sacramento, the Loft, that hosted a ton of bands. We weren't big enough for bands the size of Screeching Weasel, but I watched great small friendly bands grow and fall apart. Scared of Chaka is one that stuck with me. I saw a bit of what would bring a band to its knees by popularity.

I also briefly worked for Mordam and later Mordam/Lumberjack. There's so much information bands would talk about on how strong independent "just for the musicians" labels wouldn't pay bands but not many would put that in words (Steve Albini not included). It's just another lump you take while scraping by to put out another record.

Trying to place faces with John's Mystery Names (Chester is a stroke of genius) was better fun than trying to figure out what was going on with his writing in 2nd person. After a few (read many) pages, I got used to it and then learned to like it. It helps that "Slaughterhouse Five" is one of my favorites so the lost-in-time traveling wasn't that odd. Future John talks to Past John and they both try to keep the story straight. I really enjoyed that a lot after I figured out what was happening.

It's also a strong motivation for me to finally read Ulysses. I've been putting that off since I was 15.

Alice named her sons Jack and Lenny. Jack for Kerouac, which aptly fits, as he took off ten years ago and hasn't been heard from since. Lenny for Lenny Bruce, though he more closely resembles Steinbeck's Lennie from Of Mice and Men. As a young child, Lenny suffered an accident which has left him mentally challenged. Not only does he have trouble learning complex tasks, but he lives in a repeated refrain where "white spaces" push through and mix him up. He has a friend at work who teaches him all the wrong things about women and whose boots he admires, and a neighbor up the road who he's convinced is going to allow him to have sex with her. Other than that, his world centers around his mother, Alice. And Alice's ideas of being a mother and caring for him include teaching him - Careful! - by snuffing cigarettes on his hand. Things take a mreviewed byore ominous turn when the prodigal son Jack, now a policeman, returns to town. Alice instructs Lenny to kidnap the brother he doesn't even remember, let alone recognize, and this sets in motion a chain of devastating realizations in this family.

Madelin tells this story in rotating third person limited POV, but it's so focused that it feels like first person intimate storytelling. He does an admirable job of not only sustaining the eerie inner voices and thoughts of both Alice and Lenny, but also of sustaining the reader and heightening curiosity with these challenging perspectives. This stylized inner POV could easily become a gimmick - or annoying - if not well written. But it's so deftly handled that's it not only brutally intriguing but also becomes downright riveting as the revelations pile up. It's a forceful and complex debut from Madelin.

Master of inner-monologue

After a tragic childhood accident, Lenny has become mentally disabled and emotionally dependent on others. This includes his frustrated mother Alice, who believes her son's condition can be cured if he "sees the light," Maude, the older and inquisitive neighbor down the street whom he believes he will one day bed, and Jimmy, his best friend and co-worker who gives him bad advice about women and dating, provides him with skin flicks, and even teaches him how to masturbate to them properly.

When Alice hatches a plan for Lenny to kidnap her estranged son Jack, a policeman, the plot thickens. Lenny has no idea he's kidnapping his own brother, not only because his sibling left home over ten years prior but also because his mental capacity will not allow him to remember. Lenny's only concern is pleasing his mother, who threatens him with a game of "Careful," which usually involves some form of physical abuse or mental torture towards him. Alice's agenda is to get Jack to admit why he left and to have him help Lenny see the light. That is, after she decides to release him from being bound and gagged in the attic. Meanwhile, Jack has an astonishing secret that must be revealed before the story ends.

"Careful!" is told with breakneck pacing and incredible fervor. First time author Richard Madelin, who resides in England, weaves in and out of monologue with style and control. The protagonist is a fascinating character, reminiscent of Steinbeck's main character in "Of Mice and Men." The author's unique style of writing, mostly in inner-monologue, creates a fresh and original experience for the reader. After reading it, you will not forget the name of this book. "Careful!" is superb and easily makes my top ten list for the year. Highly recommended.

Think of this book as The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time's evil twin. A densely crafted and compelling look into two minds--a brain damaged son and an emotionally damaged mother--Careful! is a disturbing book, yet an enthralling one as well. By writing the whole book in interior monologue, Madelin really allows you to understand the motivations and choices of the characters, despite how brutal and misguided these choices wind up being. You often see people in the world who seem so messed up, and a book like Careful! helps you understand why that can happen. A modern classic of family disfunction.

Did I really succesfully make this beautiful ornament?

This book takes control of thread and hook. The nice size printed directions are easy to follow. Each ornament photo is an educational tool (you can actually see the stitches!)I enjoyed the variety of the patterns. No boredom here.
The only ingredient missing which would make these projects easier would be if

Christmas Presents Done!

I used a white 10 cotton thread on red plastic ornaments. It was enjoyable and they make a unique gift for everyone. Directions are easy to follow and the assembly on a plastic ornament is easy enough if you allow yourself to make a few mistakes when beginning. I kept my beginners and gave away the rest. I purchased all three books in the series at once and would love to see a ring bound version of all three books.
These are easy! But they are not a first time thread crocheter project. I recommend another book for that!

About the Author
Konrad Rudnicki was born in 1926 in Warsaw , Poland . From 1943 to 1945 he served in a partisan corps of the People's Guard and later the People's Army. After graduating from a clandestine high school in Piotrkow Trybunalski, he studied astronomy at Warsaw University from 1945 to 1949. He began working at the University Observatory in Warsaw in 1950. In 1952 he received his Doctor of Science, becoming an Assistant Professor in 1961. In 1962 he spent a year as a Research Fellow at California Institute of Technology, returning to Caltech in 1965-67 as a Senior Research Fellow. In 1969 he became Associate Professor, and in 1975 Professor at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow , Poland . He was Visiting Professor at the Mathematisch-Physikalisches Institut in Dornach , Switzerland in 1978-79, and in 1988-89 at Rice University in Houston , USA . He has been a Member of the International Astronomical Union since 1958. In 1991 he was elected a member of the Free European Academy of Science. He is an active member of the Anthroposophical and Mariavite movements. His work focuses on stellar and extragalactic astronomy, the foundations of cosmology and methodology of science. He is the author of 12 scientific books, 103 original astronomical papers and some 240 popular essays in astronomy. He discovered (together with B. Wszolek, P. de Bernardis and S. Masi ) the infrared light from intergalactic dust clouds, 11 supernovae and 1 comet.

What do a group of teens do when their disfunctional world is more dramatic than a daytime drama? They create their own soap. When main character, Rusty, has to deal with a bi-polar mom and an abusive stepdad, she turns to her friends for support. But when they continuously dump their problems on her, she avoids her own insanity by creating a role for each in a fictitious soap opera called Northgate Bay. Ms. Vaught is a master storyteller, and a genius at winding a plot that appeals to teens. No doubt Fat Tuesday is only the first of many excellent young adult novels we can look forward to from Susan Vaught.

Please allow me a moment of gushing...I could not put Fat Tuesday down! It gripped me, held me, shook me around and didn't let me loose until it ended. Susan Vaught has a way of writing about difficult situations and making them yours; making you feel and want to react. This is an author not to be missed.
Ok, now for the nitty gritty. Fat Tuesday hosts a group of teens and their traumas that will grab hold of you, make you laugh [the soap opera notations whilst a result of a horrible reality can make you laugh as well, most especially the Mary Hartman reference had me howling], make you cry for lost innocence and make you proud when maturing and understanding comes along.
Fat Tuesday is a book about teens; their lives thus far, what the future holds for them and them taking hold of the reins for themselves. Does this mean that the adults in this book are all horrible, no, just all to real. This also means that Fat Tuesday is a book for parents just as much as it is for their teens.
Fat Tuesday is not to be missed and Susan Vaught should be added to your automatic buy lists...beautiful writer whose plotlines hold very tangible subject matters.

Excellent debut!

I finished this book last night, staying up much later than I meant in order to see the resolution of this multilayered story. It's a gritty tale in some respects, but Ms. Vaught handles tough issues with a deft hand, making the reader care about her characters. It goes beyond the standard teen angst book in many ways. I should mention there is humor as well, mostly in the form of Stonn, a blunt Finnish exchange student who had me laughing out loud. But mostly it's the story of Rusty, who must deal with her mother's mental illness, a suicidal friend, and her own budding sexuality. The action climaxes in the rich atmosphere of Mardi Gras, which Ms. Vaught captures quite well. Highly recommmended!

when I received the book, it was already signed by the author. I'm writing an adventure book with ghosts in it and this book helps me dissociate between different kind of ghosts. It was a very good purchase.

Fantastic Advanced Level Ghost Hunting Book!

I have the authors first book, Ghost Hunter's Bible Definitive Edition, so I thought what the heck, lets check out his new book. WOW! This book was designed perfectly for advanced level ghost hunters. Different types of ghosts are broken down into separate categories. Each ghost is explained, detailed and described very accurately. The stories in this book are also amazing and are the icing on the cake. If you are a ghost hunter or someone series about studying occult subjects this is a good book to own. The writing is high quality and the pictures in this book are incredible. I am very happy with this book. I predict that The Book of Ghosts will go down in history as one of the most prominate ghost hunting references even written.
