Very Practical and Encouraging...
By Amazon Customer
Having taken a number of counseling classes in college and having engaged in innumerable counseling sessions, I expected to maybe pick up a couple pointers from this text. I picked up the pointers and more.

Quinnett begins and ends with the perspective that counseling the suicidal is both a responsibility and a privilege. He gives pointers on how to intervene and talks about how to do it, detailing Six Life-saving Steps in chapter one.

He talks at length about the place of medical treatment, helping therapists think through the need for prescriptions and the way to integrate the same into the counseling.

In chapter five, he details 38 Therapeutic Intervention Techniques. This was the most applicable part of the text.

Throughout the book he emphasizes several essentials, some of which I will touch on here:

1. The importance of genuine concern. It's important that the client know he or she is valued by the therapist.
2. The place of hope. Suicide prevention, he says, is a Therapy of Hope. He concludes the book noting that those who work with suicidal people are nothing less than agents of hope.
3. The power of faith. While he doesn't talk about faith in God, he speaks about expressing a confidence that the client will get well. This is not because of some kind of belief in the process, but rather a belief in the future and a belief in the client. This ties in closely with the concept of hope.
4. The value of non-suicide contracts. He explains their place and how to both negotiate and carry one out.
5. The place of appropriate touch. He speaks of an arm around the shoulder as a communicative sign of compassion and concern.
6. Monkey-wrenching. He speaks of putting a monkey-wrench into the plans of the client.
7. The issue of shame. He spends a little ink on talking about rethinking shame.
8. The concept of re-framing. He talks about ways to give a client new perspective to see the problem from a different vantage point.

Quinnett ends the book noting that he is "chronically optimistic" about suicidal people, seeing the suicide crisis as "a terrible thing to waste."

As I read the book, the words of St. Paul frequently came to mind: "And now these three remain -- faith, hope, and love -- but the greatest of these is love." Quinnett reminded me that all three of these are essential in the counseling setting.

I recommend the book.

Classic! Should be mandatory reading for any undergraduate or graduate program in the "helping profession" ie. Counseling, Soical Work, Marriage & Family Therapist, etc! Thoughtful, concrete, easy to read, best-practices! Hands down, the beat book I've read on the subject in my 20 years of practice.
