About the Author
Richo Cech is an internationally recognized expert on the cultivation, processing and usage of medicinal plants. His early work in African archeology and ethnobotany coupled with a life-long interest in seed saving eventually materialized in an extensive collection of seeds. This collection became the basis for Horizon Herbs, a company dedicated to the worldwide dissemination of medicinal herb seeds. Richo serves on the executive board of United Plant Savers, an organization dedicated to the conservation of Native American medicinal plants. Richo strongly believes that organic cultivation of medicinal plants provides a necessary alternative to the harvest of precious plant resources from the wilds. This the second book written by Chaplain Newby. Since one of my encounters is featured I can personally attest to the accuracy Claude stives to achieve. I have walked many miles through the jungle with this brave soldier/Chaplain and can assure you what he writes is the truth as he experienced it, coupled with others recollections. If you were having a bad day one thing you could be certain - Claude Newby would be there on the "first thing smokiin'" - often coming in on the Medivac chopper. He always went to the sound of the guns. A good man, a brave man, who writes books that are as real as he is. Read this one. (We appreciate his work helping telling our story of what really happened in Vietnam, helping us all remember those challenging days.)

A Vietnam Book That Will Survive 100 Years

It Took Heroes II is both a riveting day by day account of a Chaplains ministry in combat with Infantry Soldiers and a resource that will be sought after and read for decades. It is the author's second book on the Vietnam war, and recounts the experiences he and his men had on his second Vietnam tour. No book that I have seen captures the fear, violence, mayhem, and the special camaraderie of soldiers at war. Newby's book is a careful accounting of a battalion in combat, and he tells it from a chaplains viewpoint and with great oratorical skill. I bought both Heroes I and Heroes II, and read them both, barely putting them down. You will not be sorry that you bought this book, and Newby's first book too.

About the Author
Born in India to a Jain family, Vastupal Parikh migrated to Canada and obtained his Doctorate in Chemistry at Queen's University, Kingston. As a professor and scientist in Canada, he wrote several chemistry texts and earned a reputation as an author who could explain the most complex topics in a simple and easily understood style.

Dr. Parikh’s interest in the modern philosophy of science and the ancient philosophy of religions prompted him to explore various religious systems. He found an interesting blend of the two philosophies in Jain literature, which he later studied, in-depth for over 25 years. The present project is an outcome of such study where Dr. Parikh examines Jain principles and practices through the critical eyes of a scientist. Such critical analysis of an ancient philosophy together with Dr. Parikh’s skill in lucid writing, and his perception of the emerging concepts of spirituality make this a highly readable and interesting book.

Now retired, Dr. Parikh lives in Toronto, Canada with his wife Nalini.

Dr. Parikh’s interest in the modern philosophy of science and the ancient philosophy of religions prompted him to explore various religious systems. He found an interesting blend of the two philosophies in Jain literature, which he later studied, in-depth for over 25 years. The present project is an outcome of such study where Dr. Parikh examines Jain principles and practices through the critical eyes of a scientist. This is a wonderful book on Jainism - for those who know nothing about it as well as those who already have some background. It has a lot of good information but it is also very easy to read. Dr. Parikh has explained the concepts thoroughly and in an interesting way. You can definitely tell that he has experience as a teacher.
He presented the history and background clearly, and I have to say, it makes sense. You don't get the feeling that he is being preachy, which is refreshing.
The principles of Jainism are relevant to everyone, no matter what religion they practice. Anyone interested in a "peaceful world" (and who's not?) would enjoy reading this book. Indeed, the book is published by Peace Publications - how perfect.
The book also has examples of stunning monuments and art. Overall I enjoyed it and found it useful for me and my family.

Author has put a new idea about timeline of Jain history. The book was of great help to me for preparing a presentation on Jainism.

This is a great book on Jainism - for newbies as well as those who already have some background. It has a lot of good information but it is also very easy to read. Dr. Parikh has explained the concepts thoroughly and in an interesting way. You can definitely tell that he has experience as a teacher.
The book also has some great artwork. I enjoyed it and found it useful for me and my family.

I got this based on a comment in the book The Advancing Guitarist by Mick Goodrick. The immediate thing I noticed was that this is a text book one would find at the master degree or the PhD level if studied at the University level, like jazz physics. For a novice like myself it actually comes in handy in understanding where the Overtone scale originated from that is mentioned in Ted Greene's Single Note Soloing Vol one book. Ted touches on this briefly on the chapter on learning the Overtone scale. But this book expounds on it much further. You also get a detailed analysis of solo's using the concept and there are quizzes and tests to help you learn. But one thing to keep in mind, if Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy and and other jazz greats referenced this book AFTER they had established themselves, kid yourself not, this is jazz on steroids in the 21st century. If anything, it makes for good reading and George Russell connects the dots from Bach through today.

You don't even realize how bad this book's theories are because it's written so poorly.

Do yourself a favor and google "Lydian Chromatic Concept Discrepancies" to find the article debunking this theory written by Jeff Brent. I'm going to list some of the easiest to decipher reasons this book is bunk, but he does a much better job going into detail.

I've determined that the reason this book is so expensive can only be attributed to the author's intent to make his ideas as inaccessible to the general public as possible. Like JRR Tolkien, he has gone above and beyond in this book to completely invent his own proprietary language that has never been used before in the history of music, and he does so without abruptly and with out offering any definition for the new terms he coins at rates sometimes approaching five to the sentence. As Albert Einstein said, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." Nothing could be more self evident of Einstein's idea than this writing. But that's not why this book is bad.

No, the reason this book is bad is because it's information is bad, and the reason it's information is bad is because Russell's central premise is wrong. He starts the book by declaring a problem with the prevalent form of music theory based on a "Diatonic" system. He then launches into a diatribe about how "Diatonic" is inferior because the word "Diatonic" is derived from the greek prefix meaning "two", and that therefore "Diatonic" based harmony is constantly at conflict with itself, fighting between the Major and Lydian modes.

Which sounds great, and when I first purchased this book as a sophomore in college studying music, I completely believed him and even parroted it to some of my own music students. However, even this simple fact, of what the word "Diatonic" means was a complete fabrication. The "Dia" in "Diatonic" means "progressing through", as in "progressing through tones", and NOT what Russell claimed about that two-tonics BS.

Similarly, the primary revelation this book that the Lydian scale is the most natural and fully resolved scale is equally bull. George's first justification of this theory is that if you stack up perfect fifths to the 7th repetition, you will land on an augmented fourth rather than a perfect fourth, and therefore the augmented fourth is the more natural and at rest tone. Which again, sounded believable at first glance, but doesn't make much sense as a theory upon further speculation. Why are you only stacking up to 7 tones and not 6 or 8? The eighth tone in that series is a augmented root. Maybe that should also be included in your scale? And why are you stacking upward? If you go down a fifth you get your perfect 4th. Surely going down by one fifth is of closer relation than moving up seven fifths, is it not? The upward perfect fifth thing seems incredibly arbitrary. Sure, 5ths are incredibly important in dominant resolution, but not really in construction of the cords themselves for notes that sound simultaneously. Further, this concept doesn't even mention dominant resolution. So how does he justify it?

According to Russell, as the perfect fifth is the most prominent overtone, and that is a good reason to stack them up. Which still doesn't seem to have much justification. He even goes on to list out all the overtones, and totes the fact that the augmented fourth occurs much sooner than the perfect fourth in the overtone series. But this is also a bold faced lie. The note in the overtone series that Russell claims to be an augmented fourth is neither a augmented fourth or a perfect fourth. In fact it is almost EXACTLY in the dead center between the two notes. It only leans to the side of the augmented fourth by JUST ONE CENT, or 0.1% – an amount that is completely imprecixevable to humans. This is both wrong and disingenuous. In actuality, the perfect 4th, a REAL perfect 4th and not just a rounding error, occurs at the 22nd overtone, a good bit before you see a real augmented fourth appear.

I could go on, but like I said, others have already pointed out many of the inconsistencies more thoroughly than I could in this forum. Please don't waste your money on this book, as you won't understand it, and anything you do understand will be something the author fabricated out of whole cloth, or just plain wrong.

TLDR: The reason this book was never published with a major publisher is because it was not written in a language discernible by english speakers, and if it had undergone necessary editing to make the point discernible any publisher with a fact checking department would have shut the project down for it's many inconsistencies and what are either lies or stunningly negligent oversights.

An absolute lifesaver!

This is the best book I've ever purchased! It is so easy to understand the directions and I love having my meals planned all week long. I go to her website and print off a copy of the shopping list for the week I'm using, adjust it as she instructs in the book and I'm on my way. My grocery bill is down, the time I spend in the grocery store with a toddler is cut in half, and we haven't come across one bad recipe in the five weeks we've done. We omit the chili flakes because we like to keep things mild, but the spices are so wonderful we don't loose any of the flavor when we omit the heat. We have recommended this book to so many people I'm thinking about ordering a stack of them to have on hand!

The Healthy Family: Cooking for the Rushed

Weekly meal planning simplified! Even the grocery list is done for you! All you need to do is compare the grocery list for the menu items for the week to what you already have in your cupboard and purchase the difference.
Each meal has the protein, fat and carb count listed so if you watch that kind of thing--it's already done for you.
Instructions really are quick and easy. I have used this book for the last four weeks and have been amazed at how user-friendly it is. The food is delicious -- most meals got a rating of 8 or higher out of 10 by my family (including an 8 year old and an eleven year old!)
This book has truly made meal planning, shopping and preparing much simpler.

Every Family needs this book!!!!

I bought this book because I was interested in healthy family meals. But what I ended up loving about this book is the money it has saved me in groceries every week. With grocery lists included for each week, there is no waste in my fridge. The weekly plans are flexible enough for our families needs. So easy, little to no thought is needed every week on what to eat. Saves valuable time. Especially at dinner time when kids are crazy!! Another surprise to me was how few dishes get dirty in the preparation. A real bonus. Another real bonus is this is a Canadian author and book. I will be buying this book for everyone I know.

A guide that every Caribbean cruise traveler should carry

If you're looking for a comprehensive and informative guide to Caribbean ports, you won't go wrong with this guide. You can save money by avoiding the cost of ship-sponsored shore excursions, and you'll be more informed when you reach your destination. Anne Vipond provides a good outline of information for each port, including ideas for unique or interesting activities for that location. There is plenty of information about availability of taxis, public transportation, and ways of getting to specific places. There is also a map of most port locations that will allow you to develop your own walking or taxi tour. The "Best Beaches" section for each port identifies your best bets for sun and sand. This guide book is well-organized, very readable, and small enough to carry with you in a purse, belt pack, or back pack (not small enough for most pockets, however). Highly Recommended!

Like A String of Pearls

Fortunate is the owner of this book. The elegant covers of this collection of essays embrace small worlds of being, revealing themselves as Eddy's prose gently unfurls, opening and enlarging with it the readers mind and insights over vast distances of space, time, culture and meaning.

I find it difficult to describe the quality of pleasure that I experience while reading, and rereading, these meditations. Their essential value-and joy-has been that of reminding this reader of the vast potentialities for original thinking that lie within the mind, but which are frequently derailed by routine habits of thinking, and inattentiveness to the patterns of connection of being and seeing. Eddy's thought patterns are never routine, and frequently startling in their fertility and originality of association. Each one is a pearl-a unique aggregate of the luminous colors of an auspicious mind.

Form follows function. This book is a beautiful physical illustration of that observation. Not quite six by eight by one inches, its qualities of weight, printing, and craftsmanship are such that it can easily be held-open for reading-in one hand; wonderful for striking a casually erudite and appealingly cultivated pose. Romantics, and intellectuals, take note.

It's an exquisite addition to the Thinking Man or Thinking Woman's library.

An enjoyable read that will make a thoughtful mind stronger

This book explores one of the greatest minds on human perception though pleasurable short stories.
The author, Bill Eddy, offers unique insight on how language and culture have shaped opinions of the natural environment. He demonstrates the need to change the inside - the way we think - before we can change the outside.
He does this by gracefully guiding the reader on how this is far more important than simply addressing familiar issues like water resources or soils types. And, as he demonstrates, this understanding affects absolutely everything.
The unique aspect is that he does this as a storyteller, not an activist with an agenda. He offers concepts to ponder from his worldwide experience of 40 years of cultural film making.
These short, philosophical essays read well together or independently. Many were created for five minute pieces on National Public Radio. The advantage I found of having the book, however, is re-reading certain sections expanded the meaning when applied to my own experience.
This is a great read for any thoughtful person, and a perfect gift or addition to a bedside table.

About the Author
ELIZABETH FRANKLIN founded The Franklin Report in 1999. Prior to forming this corporation, Franklin was a partner at the investment bank, James D. Wolfensohn, Inc., where she specialized in mergers & acquisitions. While at Wolfensohn, she managed a significant renovation of her family's Manhattan residence, becoming an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) in the process.

Jane's Addiction

I became addicted to the 1st edition of this guide book last Christmas. A temperature check of interior design and architecture, and an unrivaled resource for the more mundane (however talented) window washers and plumbers -- The Franklin Report offered good sport and hard information. So I was pleasantly surprised to find a brand spanking new NYC edition has hit the stands. The most noticeable difference this year is that the understated almost medical-journal like cover has been replaced by an equally elegant yet more consumer friendly facade. I liken it to the new twenty-dollar bills. Inside, the book is about a hundred pages longer, including an index that makes a name-search a million times easier. To my delight, every entry has been rewritten and customer comments expanded. And while the design establishment pantheon hasn?t been rewritten, every category in the report offers some great new finds to choose from. Looks like I picked the wrong year to stop studying up on designers!

How did I ever keep home without it???

Once you discover this book, you wonder how you ever lived without it. It fills a real need for any homeowner or renter who will ever need to find a professional to fix up their home or just to fix (repair, clean, install, redo) something in it. I got my Franklin Report a few weeks ago and already have answered a desperate friend's cry for help about who to call to get a dining room chair fixed in time for a Christmas dinner. The book is surprisingly entertaining, and has an informative section for each specialty that helps in choosing a service provider and negotiating the work agreement. It also has that all-important but very hard-to-find information about pricing.
Every home should have a copy. I'm giving it to my friends for Christmas this year. I know they will thank me!

Fills a Huge Void!

This book is an exceptionally user-friendly and comprehensive guide to the universe of home services that a New York City dweller needs to survive. So often, one has a service need but simply cannot go beyond one or two unqualified word of mouth recommendations to select an appropriate provider. And even when one gets a recommendation, a feature of the service may be left out - the recommender may not, for example, want to disclose how much he or she paid. To have a book like The Franklin Report, which rates all relevant aspects of a provider and which furnishes specific statements about a particular job, is invaluable. I can't recommend it more highly.

DIANE POMERANCE received her Ph.D. in Communications from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Pomerance is an active volunteer for the SPCA of Texas, K-9 Friends Visiting Therapy Dogs of GTDOG, and the Texas Alaskan Malamute Rescue. I've been in construction for over 30 years, most of which has been as a superintendent, foreman or self-employed contractor. Many times I have needed information such as what size footing do I need for a two story building, or what size floor joist to span say 15'6" (who knows).

Nobody carriers around a great big engineering book with them, so as most men do, is to make an educated "guess"; which means buying more concrete or lumber than is necessary. The first time this book is used it will pay for itself many times over. I designed this book that fits in a shirt pocket with only the most commonly used information. It saves time and no guessing.
