A Must Read for Students of 2oth Century European History

Edward Norton was an American diplomat who retired to Malaga, Spain in the 1930s. One of the very few Westerners to stay and observe the entire seven months' rule by the Spanish Anarchists and Communists, his diaries document the disastrous results of government by mob.
After Norton's death, his great nephew, William Harmon, inherited the diaries, and has used them and other family documents to tell the story of the starvation, arson, mass executions and destruction which ended only when General Franco's forces reached the city to re-establish order.
I think this is an excellent account of an eye witness to the Spanish Civil War.
In my own youth, American news reports pictured Franco as the villain. He was indeed a dictator, but he appears to have saved Malaga from the final total destruction of the city and from the execution of its remaining citizens planned by the anarchists.

About the Author
Besim S. Hakim, architect and urban designer, has worked as professor/scholar and as a consultant/practitioner. He is Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners, and Member of the American Institute of Architects. His education in architecture was at Liverpool University, UK, and urban design at Harvard. He has researched and uncovered the underlying processes, rules, codes, and management systems of traditional towns since 1975. This book and subsequent other studies are a result of that work and have been, since its first publication in 1986, influential on numerous studies undertaken in academia and in professional practice.

This book addresses an important but rarely studied question: how do the many
individual decisions involved in city building (and, indeed, in the creation of
all cultural landscapes) add up to a coherent whole? I have discussed this question in very conceptual and general terms. To my knowledge this is the first book to do so in a very explicit and detailed manner.
The emphasis is on process, although the product characteristics are illustrated. In studying process by asking this very general question of great interest and importance: "How do villages, cities and cultural landscapes come together?" this book provides an answer for one class of landscapes. In doing so, it shows two things. First, that rules and principles do operate, as indeed they must do for any cultural landscape which cannot be random, haphazard or chaotic. Second, that these rules cannot only be explicit but even written down. Essentially this book studies these rules, how they worked, how they were applied and by whom. It does so both at the macro- and micro-scales.
In general this study makes a significant contribution, of interest in itself but also important as a potential stimulus to similar studies of rule systems in other cultures. This is because it suggests the possibility also that such rule systems may be rather more explicit in other cases than had been thought, even when not written down. There may thus be attempts to uncover these, eventually leading to comparative studies which in turn may lead to generalizations. These are essential steps on the way to valid theory.
How well the book does what it sets out to do? In general, the answer is that it does so quite well: the argument is generally clear, the writing succinct, the illustrations and their excellent captions are clearly related to the text and clarify it. The material on dwellings, streets and open spaces, and other components of the city is extremely clear. Anyone who has ever been concerned with Islamic cities, tried to understand them and has read the existing literature will be greatly enlightened. Also, in contradistinction to many designers, not only are physical aspects considered (e.g. windows, doors, party walls, supports, trees, etc.); behavior is also discussed (e.g. privacy, overlooking, etc.). Moreover, non-visual aspects are considered--smoke, odors, sounds and noise, water use and drainage, land use (e.g. shops and industry) and so on. Also, enough details, with cases and
examples, are cited so that one can follow the application of the principles. The
way the relatively few elements are combined is well and convincingly demonstrated. The analysis of Tunis, from site selection, through a series of diminishing scales is very useful indeed in clarifying the morphology of the city.

A Must Have for the Practitioner

This is beyond a book - it is a veritable gold mine of lists, resources and practical advice on HOW to conduct Six Sigma in a real world setting. Probably one of the best resources I have had a chance to review and read - and a great addition to any practitioner's tool chest. Strongly recommend - and make sure you get the CD.

This book R O C K S!

A must read Six Sigma book!!
This is a great Six Sigma introductory and reference book. The book is very, very nicely laid-out and very colorful. Thank god this isn't another dull looking six sigma book. Holy cow!! Six Sigma books can be bright and colorful as well as informative. The graphic artist is wonderful. Tom Peters would incessantly rant about the presentation of the book if he were to see it compared to others. The first chapter provides a nice Six Sigma introduction devoid of the sales hype that exists in other Six Sigma books. It succinctly answers the what's, the who's, the benefits, the how's, and the whys of Six Sigma. The factoid I liked best in this chapter is that Six Sigma isn't twice as good as three sigma; it's 20,000 times better. Each chapter had a factoid I have never considered.
Chapter 2 titled "Ready?" does a very good job of explaining what an organization must do in preparation of Six Sigma again, minus the sales hype. Again the graphics are wonderful. This is a very helpful chapter to read and share with your management, if you're trying to get your organization to consider Six Sigma.
However, the chapter I liked the most is titled "Project". This chapter does a fantastic job linking the DMAIIC (I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the extra I) process and a typical project. The project in the book is discussed on a week-by-week basis and provides insight of what should occur not only at the meetings but also between meetings.
The subsequent chapters are equal as well written, succinct, and devoid of the sales pitches. Those chapters are the: Long Haul, DMAIIC (once again, I'm not sure about the extra I), Tools (standard set of Six sigma tools explained; there is nice chart to help you decide which control chart to use, and R&R (references and resources)
I have recommended this book to people who want to understand what Six Sigma is and what a Six Sigma project looks like (I absolutely loved this section). If you're a Six Sigma novice or expert, this book is definitely worth purchasing.
Apparently, in the future you will be able to purchase an e-book version of this book that will contain even more data. I can't wait to see.
The DMAIIC process used by this book is Define, measure, analyze, improve, implement, and control. I believe JPMorgan uses this same definition of DMAIIC.

"I have been certified as a Black Belt in a plant of Johnson Controls who manufactures Trim Covers during the last 2 1/2 years in Cd. Juarez, Mexico and when I saw the title of Sailing Through Six Sigma had the curiosity to see its content just to know more about this field that has captured my efforts during this time. My surprise was that this book is more oriented to the deployment of Six Sigma as a business strategy in any company who wants to be world class or simply to survive in the near future improving its processes, than the full exposition of a variety of statistical techniques. Although I knew how to deploy the strategy in our plant, I was not aware of the full implications of the deployment of Six Sigma as a business strategy. Reading this book helped me to see exactly what is needed, when is needed and how to do it and the people responsible to do it. Specially, the chapter of how to perform successfully a Six Sigma project since the very beginning to its conclusion was outstanding because during the time I have been involved in performing projects, my concern has been also how to be succesfull in this issue. So the book's structure is well planned and esy to follow, specially the formats are helpfull to see how to go from one step to the next one in order of importance. I highly recommned this book to those who are actully involved in deploying Six Sigma and to those interested just in knowing more about the theme"

In this first book in the series, the school's star swimmer thinks he sees a ghost in the pool one morning. The League decides to crack the case using logical thinking and deductive reasoning to help get the swim team to overcome its fears. Ghosts in the Water: The First League of Scientists Mystery by Sue Garcia would appeal most to late elementary school and early middle school readers. It is a fast-paced, easy, and engaging read that pulls in science and math content in a way that does not feel forced. The reader is exposed to just enough binary coding, marine biology, archaeology, and chemistry to have his or her curiosity piqued. The teacher's guide has many suggestions for fun ways to explore topics in more depth. The one aspect of the novel that I found regrettable is that few of the teachers are portrayed in a positive light. There is one “cool” teacher who supports the League and an understanding principal who gives the group a lot of leeway, but most of the educators at the League's school are angry, impatient, and unsympathetic. A teacher even turns out to be one of the villains in the story. Overall, I highly recommend this book. I think that it would provide great opportunities for collaboration between math teachers and science teachers. Science can solve ghost mysteries Too

This is nice adventurous fiction book perfectly designed for kids 10+ because that's when fiction novels and fantasy stories are ruling kids dream world. The best of the book is the characters say John and others creates a feel of self confidence in kids that we should believe in ourselves so we an do it. It's very interesting how kids see the mystery in a swimming pool that's the ghosts in water using science and logical thinking.the book has a glossary that explains the concepts to support young reader with the new words vocabulary . I love adventure books so I gave a first shot before giving to my little sister. It's really interesting. Overall a great adventurous fiction book to brighten kids mind.

LOVE IT!!!

I went to a work function where we all brought a dish and someone brought a salad dish from this book, which we all gobbled up. I purchased the cookbook shortly after tasting a soup she brought to another function and have never regretted it. I've owned this book for 2 years now and LOVE it. In fact, every person who has tasted one of the dishes from this book has gone out and bought it right after (even non-vegetarians). It's the wonderful combination of fresh ingredients and herbs that makes it. You can not fail with the recipes in this book. I have bought this book as gifts for close friends who always thank me afterwards. I could not live without the recipes in this book. I particularly like the Rustic Bread Salad, the lotusland linguine and the tofu chocolate (vegan) cheesecake. I have many cookbooks on my shelves, but this is the one I turn to first. I highly recommend it!!!!! I only wish I could visit the restaurant myself, but maybe one day l will.

The single greatest cookbook I've ever owned...

I have owned this cookbook for years and have purchased many copies since for friends and family. I'm not a vegetarian but I try not to consume a lot of meat and would have to say, in all honesty, that I use this cookbook at least three or four times a week (even after all these years). Rather than count the number of recipes I have made, I would probably be better off counting those I still haven't tried!

I could see how it might be frustrating to track down some of the ingredients if you don't live in a large city but every recipe can be tweaked to use a more standard item, if needed, or simply ordered online.

My favorite recipes that get rave reviews from friends are the pierogies, Greek lentil soup, yam and pepita quesadillas, either of the burgers, and the lime sugar cookies. I also make the whole wheat hotcakes nearly every weekend!

Delightfully Different

This is one of my favorite cookbooks!! I love the fusion behind many of their recipes. I also hold any cookbook in high regard when it emphasizes making most everything from scratch...even tortillas!!!! This cookbook has a great section just for basics that will start any cook off to a good start.

A few points, however, that not all of the recipes I think are to the correct amounts. I do not mind this so much as it only takes a bit of "tinkering". Also, for those who do not live in an area where you have access to an excellent natural foods market, you might be limited on a few of the recipes. I still, however, think it is worth it to have this cookbook.

I appreciated this book and the practical suggestions the author provided, however, the title - to me - is a little misleading. The book could be called "Getting Gigs on Cruise Ships." Much information was provided about crusie ship gigs, including 6 pages of contact info. That information alone was worth 4 stars for me, otherwise, the rest of the info is not for a seasoned performer. This is a good book for someone starting a career. Make sure you double check all the included web-sites, phone numbers, e-mails, etc. This kind of information changes quickly!
