Good all around book

Apparently, there isn't too much to know about Mason bees and their derivatives as opposed to honey bees. This is a good all around book for someone that just wants to lure and manage a few bees for their home orchard and garden pollination.

Reads like a school term paper. The edition I borrowed (first) has lots of spelling and grammatical errors, poorly drawn illustrations, and some parts weren't very clearly written. Honestly, the best thing this book has going for it, is there just aren't that many books on mason bees out there. Maybe the second edition is better, but I'm not going to buy it to find out.

I'm new to bee-keeping and this book is a complete resource on all things pertaining to mason bees. Engagingly written with good illustrations. A local mason bee-keeper referred me to the book and I don't think I will have many questions not answered by this book. I'm excited for spring!

About the Author
Carl was a Missouri boy who studied journalism and then pitched up in Shanghai in 1911 to start China's first American-run English-language newspaper, the China Press. He then started his own advertising agency that made him wealthy and revolutionized advertising and brand management in China. He was one of the most prominent foreigners in China during the era between the world wars.

Classic Problems Doing Business in China

For anyone who has studied China in advance of doing business there since Deng took his tour of the south and suggested to be rich is glorious or who has already ventured into the Chinese market, Crow's 65-year old story is reassuring. Everything in China has changed and nothing has changed. Perhaps the greatest lesson is that China changes but VERY slowly.
Crow's insight into China and especially Shanghai "before Liberation" provides wonderful stories of how to develop ads and merchandising tactics, deal with Chinese customers, and keep on laughing. If you have ever read any other book about the Chinese market, it invariably cited Crow. Now, go to the primary source. It is somewhat frustrating to know he dealt with the same issues with which we deal now, but it is also reassuring to know that he did encounter similar problems. It makes forecasting in China a bit easier.

A glimpse into China's past

This book offers a wonderful reflection of life, business and Chinese culture from a period before the second world war. For those who have been to Shanghai or other parts of China you can close your eyes and make more sense of the experience through the eyes of Carl Crow. For those who are planning a trip to China this book offers some cultural perspective and preparation for your travels. Irrespective of your reasons for studying or visiting China, this book is a sentimental must-have for any China library.

I have waited patiently for this wonderful book to be reprinted.

Carl Crow opened an advertising agency in Shanghai in the 1920's. This charming book tells the tale. He learned much about China, the pragmatic take on human nature the Chinese enjoy, and the folly of American companies whose determination to "take the Chinese market by storm" always left him with sadder but wiser clients, who -- oh, dream of every agency anywhere in the world -- actually listened to him.

Crow is the best of company, and his observations are timeless. The book will linger with you.

About the Author
Janet Chapple is a Montana native whose parents once worked at Old Faithful Inn, the historic lodge in Yellowstone Park. Great trip-planning guide!

We took two books to Yellowstone-this was one and it was a gem(the other was A Ranger's Guide to Yellowstone Day Hikes-equally invaluable). The maps and descriptions were a tremendous help. We read through the book while planning our trip and weren't disappointed in anything that we did. We kept it close at hand in the park the whole week. There wasn't a day that we didn't consult it. Now that we're home, I look at the dog-eared little book and am so thankful for the reviews I read about this book and decided to order it to plan our trip.

Has to make the trip with you

This was a wonderful addition to our trip. As we would head to a new vista to see, a geyser to explore, or animals to marvel at - I would read excerpts of this book to the family. They loved it!!! It is like having a park guide with you sharing bits of information that add so much to the experience. Now that we are back home, I continue to hear the children and my husband talk about the book Mom had and how great it was to hear the extra information. A real plus to our trip and a must for yours. I did pass the book around before the trip and encouraged each person to look through it and flag anything they wanted to be sure to see. Buy it! And be sure and visit this treasure of a place.

World Class Info for a World Class Spot

Does your dog dislike being left alone? More importantly, do you have a hard time leaving your dog, even for world-class travel destinations? Whether you are a would-be traveler to Jackson Hole Wyoming, or a local with a dog, this book will help and inspire you. "Doggy Doings" is, as the title says, a complete reference of information you will find nowhere else. There are chapters that will give you specific and immediately useful information such as where you can go hiking with your dog. For some reason, I particularly enjoyed the chapters with more "surprising" information: chapters that offered the kind of tidbits you like to think you never will need -- such as what to do if you and your dog encounter large wild animals -- bears or moose. The chapter on dealing with any type of emergency made for suspenseful reading. In all likelihood, most of us never will encounter those situations: the majority of the book deals with all the pleasures that you and your dog hope to find and can expect to find in one of the most beautiful spots on earth. This book, like the area it describes and helps you to access, is truly one of a kind. I highly recommend it and wish there were one like it for every area of the country. I liked how the book took into acount and reached for a true community of people, environment and animals. You will both enjoy and use this book.

Excellent Book for our trip to Jackson Hole w/our dogs

Imagine piling into the car with 4 kids, luggage and 3 dogs for your next vacation and not having any idea as to what you can do with the dogs once you get there. That was us last summer, heading off to Jackson Hole, and had it not been for this book which was refered to us by another friend, we would have never taken our dogs with us. It explains where good areas our to take your dogs, what to expect if you run into wildlife...bears etc. We never did, but we were prepared thanks to this book. The author did a wonderful job of reasearching all the valuable information in this book. Becuase of the information in this book, the whole family, from the kids tro the pets had a great time. If you are planning a trip to the Jackson Hole area with your pet, this is a MUST read before, and during your trip!!!

perfect alternative if frustrated with National Park Service Restrictions on dogs

Drove from Texas with my lab only to discover no pets in the national parks. Bummer. But found this book in Jackson and now we have wonderful hiking alternatives.

About the Author
J. Barlow Herget received his B.A. in English and history from the University of Arkansas and his M.A. in history from the University of Virginia. He was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. Barlow has worked for the Daily Press of Paragould, Arkansas, and Raleigh's The News and Observer. His articles have appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times and numerous other publications. He has been a resident of the Triangle since 1973. Rich Weidman has served as the editor of several regional guidebooks. He received his B.A. in English from Stetson University and his M.A. in English from the University of Florida.

About the Author
Marsha McCloskey has written or co-authored twenty quilt books. She is a highly regarded quilt instructor, having taught all over the U.S. and in eight foreign countries. She designs fabric for Clothworks, and runs her own business, Feathered Star Productions in Seattle, Washington.

Sharon Yenter is the owner of In The Beginning Fabrics in Seattle, Washington. She is the author or "Floral Bouquet Quilts From In The Beginning", has designed quilt patterns, and currently designs fabric for her own textile company. She is a longtime collector of antique quilt, sees herself as a caretaker of those quilts and is committed to spreading the history, art, friendship, and fun of quiltmaking.

Beauty in a Book

This is a sumptuous book. I would buy it just for the photographs and quality of printing. I would categorize it as both a quilt history lover's book and a how to book. The patterns and projects included relate to English frame quilting, and American quilting of the late 18th century and early 19th. But the book is also very liberating in that it shows how to break away from what we have learned about color and contrast to achieve a very different look which can be traditional or very modern indeed. The introduction is well worth rereading and the entire book will evoke a great deal of thought. If you love fabric, buy the book soon as some of the fabrics shown are still in the shops.

wonderful quilts, wonderful change of pace

i bought this book for a quilting class, and i really like the authors' concepts.

i love, and am making, quilts with the familiar high contrast graphic traditional block patterns. but seeing the quilts in this book has been an inspiration. i am looking at the fabrics in my stash with a new eye, and also thinking of using the authors' ideas for clothing, some of which is shown in a photograph of one of the authors and her granddaughter.

this book is going to be useful for many, many years. i recommend it to any quilter or anyone who makes clothes.

Gorgeous Quilts

This book is for anyone in love with turn of the century quilts, and turn of the century fabric. McClosky and Yenter have great patterns, but also give tips on what types of blocks and what types of fabric make beautiful blended quilts, and that is what really is important to those of us who like to be inspiried and then design our own quilts. This book is great for beginners (easy patterns, and the fabric choices help hide seams that don't match perfectly) and experienced quilters alike.
