Gorgeous coffee-table quality picture book

Jesus from A to Z is such a gorgeous book that it will be hard for parents or grandparents to hand it over to their little ones. I keep mine literally on the coffee table for people to admire and leaf through. The illustrations are tender and beautiful, the colors rich and luminous, and the figures graceful and tender. Kevin Graham gives short snapshots of Jesus' life and character using wording children will understand, and he aptly conveys major themes: God is good; God loves us; God sent Jesus to help us; we can love others by telling them about Jesus. Text and illustrations pair beautifully to convey these concepts.

This lovely little book teaches children about the life of Jesus in an alphabet sequence. The illustrations are gorgeous, really bringing the story to life. Sure to become a cherished family heirloom!

An alphabet book about Jesus' life

Jesus From A to Z, written by Kevin Graham, is an alphabet book about Jesus. The text for most of the letters consists of short, simple stories about Jesus - the things he did, the people he knew, and stories he told. For instance, "M" is for "Miracles," "T" is for "Twelve Disciples," and "P" is for "Prodigal Son."

This book explores Jesus' life through its variety of stories. It gives young children an introduction to Jesus, showing him as someone who is not only the Son of God, but is also kind and humble.

The text is enhanced by the rich and expressive oil paint illustrations by Jennifer Yoswa. All of them cover a full two-page spread, with the text highlighted in boxes within the illustrations.

What I Like: I like the variety of stories in the book. Not all of them are expressly about Jesus, but they all portray some aspect of him or his life.

What I Dislike: Even though I like the illustrations, my only complaint is that they are mostly dark in tone and color, lending a somber air to the book.

Overall Rating: Excellent.

Age Appeal: 3-8 is given as the intended audience, but I would say older children would enjoy a book like this as well.

Great Book

Not only did I like the book, but my two sons loved it as well! I originally wanted this book for my 2 1/2 year old. One of the plus's about this book is its sturdy construction. This book will survive for quite some time and is very durable. As I read this book to my "baby", my older son was at our dining room table doing his homework. As I read allowed to my youngest Shaunnessy, in the corner of my eye, I would see Lancer (my oldest) fidgeting at the table. Lancer was actually trying to position himself closer to us to hear the story himself. After I completed the story, Lancer asked if he could read it himself. Of course I said sure. For a book to grab his attention and want to read it himself, is fantastic since he does not like to read at all.

Even thought the story is about a girl and her cat, the story itself has great meaning to both myself as a parent as well as to my children. Lancer and I have recently discussed things that children may do and get in trouble but no matter what their parents still love them very much. This book reinforced that concept for my family. The illustrations captured both my attention as well as that of my two sons. My boys liked the book so much that later in the evening, I could hear Lancer talking to Shaunessy in his bedroom. I opened the door a crack and seen the two of them on his bed and Lancer was actually reading to his baby brother! That has never happened before!

I would recommend this book to anyone.

Attachment Parenting at Its Very Best

Valya Boutenko has written a most prescious and loving children's story about the love and acceptance of a cat on the grounds that no matter what negative situation the cat turns up,
true unconditional love is never in question. I see this as extending way beyond the immediate story itself and into the lives of our families throughout the world today. In today's society
in which both parents are often away from their children for many hours of the day, "Will You Love Me Still?" is a call for attention, kindness, and unending love. Children can sometimes
attract notice through their negative doings, observing if a parent or important other will become alarmed and angry by their actions or ....will demonstrate that love exists with permanence.
Attachment Parenting refers to following the needs of the child, rather than the child following the needs of the adult. This beautifully written book speaks out for Attachment Parenting, whether it be
unconditional love of a cat or a child. Thank you Valya for your deep love of cats and children, and to Katya for the gorgeous illustrations that will be cherished by all children. I am excited
to recommend "Will You Love Me Still?"

Librarian Mom thinks this cat is very similar to her kids...

I'm a librarian raising kids (5 & 7) who, I know this is shocking, loves to give books as gifts. For baby gifts, instead of cute little clothes the baby will grow out of in a minute, I give board books. And instead of books everyone gives (even if they are super good like Sandra Boyden, Goodnight Moon...) I love to give a super good book that is also unique and not as well known. Will You Love Me Still? fits the bill for me. The illustrations are not the super slick, super polished, well known publisher type -- instead, they are full color color and charming. For example, the illustrator has put funky wallpaper on the wall, and the expressions on the cat's face for each situation she gets herself into are spot on. I'm not sure how the illustrator does this, but she makes the naughty (kid like) white cat stand out as the star that she is, on every page. The cat gets into situations every parent is familiar with, my favorites being cutting out the curtains to make a costume (I especially like how the cat sticks out her tongue in concentration)and the cat with a huge spaghetti mess all over her head. In a world with books about kids killing kids(i.e. Hunger Games, which I personally love, but the message...) this book stands out as something every child needs to hear: no matter what bad thing you do, yes, I will still love you.

Stephen's multiple physical challenges could not silence him. In September of 2000, he began using a makeshift writing machine consisting of a tape recorder, a pillow speaker, and an adapted switch. In his mother's arms, working through great physical pain, he would listen as the recorder slowly announced the letters of the alphabet, one letter at a time. When he heard the letter that he wanted, he touched the switch. The tape stopped, announced the letter, recorded it, and started over again. Fourteen years of silence were interrupted, one letter at a time. This book contains over 900 hours of Stephen's words.

Stephen died peacefully in his mother's arms, on June 1, 2001. He completed his life work to:

Show the whole world that our love is what's right.
They will hear my own voice in the words that I write.
Go tell the people for me mom.
Take my words in your heart.
Then they will know our love is what's right.

About the Author

Stephen was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 5th, 1986. Sometimes angels come to earth dressed in human wrappers. Stephen must be an angel.

He graced earth weighing only two pounds. His earthly existence was challenged by a myriad of physical complications due to his premature birth. Lung disease, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, cortical blindness, and autonomic nervous system disorder accompanied him, yet he grew to five feet tall and one hundred pounds at age fourteen.

Complications of pancreatitis, a ruptured diaphragm, sepsis, pertussis, pneumonia, gastic cellulites, myocardial infarction, stroke, xanthramonas multiphillia, kidney stones, and liver failure slowed him down but didn't suddenly end his life as was "prescribed" by medical experts. His spirit soared with laughter as he endured these enormous physical challenges. He loved life.

During his fourteen years on earth he caught a fish, rode in an hot air balloon, rode the waves in the ocean, played baseball with Sammy Sosa, had two mothers who loved him, sang "Piano Man" with Billy Joel, prayed with evangelist Benny Hinn, danced with Jimmy Buffett, played drums at a pow-wow, learned how to ride a "bike," had a book written about him that is used in congressional testimony, changed policy with elected officials, got a puppy, was kissed by Cinderella, sang with Attorney General Ashcroft, camped in a tent, composed a song, defied the odds, slept in a houseboat, and wrote this book one letter at a time.

Stephen must be an angel.

Letter of Hope for Every Heart

Each time I go back and read one of Stephen's poems I am reminded of the joy, wonder, love and hope that surrounds us every day. This young man was truly a gift of pure love. For every family who has a special needs child, I recommend this book. For every family that would like to help their children understand the person inside "the package" and see the heart, mind and soul of a special needs child, I recommend this book. For every person who has known that physical limitations cannot measure the depth of a soul, I recommend this book. For every person who has doubted and questioned if a mind, heart and soul exists inside a body wracked with physical limitations, I recommend this book. Read this book in conjunction with his mother's "Eagle Doctor: Stories of Stephen, My Child With Special Needs" to understand their path together and the miracle of their lives.

About the Author
Theodore Payne, an Englishman, arrived in California in 1893 and soon began his life's work as a nurseryman and preserver of California native plants. In his lifetime (1872-1963) he brought many wildflowers into cultivation and saved much of the native flora from disappearing. He was a delightful observer of people and the early California scene.

A fascinating look back at 19th& early 20th century California

While Payne's book is not so much a defense of California native plants and their value in terms of beauty and practicality, his book provides some unique insights of a man who came to California in 1893 and who lived in Los Angeles and Orange County as the California landscape was quickly dimishing.

While attending a party at the home of famed Polish actress Madama Modjeska, amid a diversity of people - indigenous, Mexican, Anglo, native and non-native - he marveled at the diversity and the climate that made it possible.

"I thought to myself, 'What a wonderful country. No where else could this happen. Hospitality and freedom. No social lines or barriers and everyone happy and contented."

About the Author
Long recognized as one of the finest writers in the Dakotas, Tony Bender gained national recognition in 2001 when he was awarded a first place prize for humor writing by the National Newspaper Association for his piece entitled, “The Redhead’s Tractor,” which is contained in his first collection of writing, Loons in the Kitchen.

While acclaimed for his humor writing, Bender’s ability to present more serious, heart-warming and introspective aspects of life on the Great Plains also helped him win seven first place newspaper association awards for his column in the ‘90s.

Bender began publishing his weekly syndicated column, “That’s Life,” in 1991, writing for his hometown paper, the Brown County News in Frederick, SD. That very first year, Bender scored a first place award for his column in the South Dakota Newspaper Association’s annual contest.

Born in 1958 in Ashley, ND, Bender grew up in Frederick, a tiny community on the North Dakota-South Dakota border, 26 miles north of Aberdeen, SD. That community with a population of 400 provided Bender with a “Tom Sawyer existence” that surfaces in his writing as he tells the tales of the characters he grew to love.

After a year of journalism at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, Bender, in 1977, opted for hands-on experience and embarked on a radio career including stops at KSDN and KKAA in Aberdeen and KQDJ in Jamestown, ND.

In 1983, Bender moved to Denver where he worked at legendary radio stations KHOW and KIMN.

His sense of adventure took him to Juneau, AK in 1986, where he starred at KTKU with his unique morning show featuring alter-egos like obnoxious newsman Irving R. Osgood and the unscrupulous Rev. Billy Joe Jim-Bob. In 1988, Bender was awarded the “Goldie,” a top honor from the Alaska Radio and Television Association, for his accomplishments at KTKU.

In 1989, Bender accepted a morning drive position at WBPR in Myrtle Beach, SC. Shortly after his arrival, Hurricane Hugo struck. While all other broadcast stations evacuated, Bender and his newsman elected to stay to broadcast to the many listeners who had not been able to evacuate in time. As the only station on the air for hundreds of miles delivering crucial information, the effort was widely applauded by South Carolina officials and citizens.

In 1990, Bender returned to North Dakota to be closer to his family, accepting a position as news director at KYYY, Bismarck. In 1991, he took a position as a reporter at the Williston Daily Herald. Six months later he was offered the publishership of the floundering Adams County Record in Hettinger, ND.

Bender sparked a resurgence in the Adams County Record leading it to two General Excellence Awards, the highest honor from the North Dakota Newspaper Association. He served as executive news director for the parent company, Dickson Media, until 1997.

Bender was presented the first-ever North Dakota Newspaper Association First Amendment Award in 2000 for his continuing fight for the public’s right to know what their governments are doing. He has championed open meetings through the NDNA Legislative Affairs Committee. “I think government works better under a spotlight rather than in the shadows,” he has said.

In 2000, Bender was elected to the NDNA board of directors.

Bender led the Ashley Tribune to NDNA Sweepstakes Awards in 2000 and 2001. He is a two-time winner of the North Dakota Heritage Writing Contest. His writing has been published in North Dakota Outdoors, The National Newspaper Association’s Publishers Auxiliary, The Journal of Indian Wars and newspapers in many states.

Bender and his wife, Julie, have two children, Dylan and India. The couple owns Redhead Publishing, which includes The Wishek Star and Ashley Tribune. The company publishes niche publications including Mighty Mac Hunting & Fishing Guide and Spring and Fall Ag Outlook.

Loons, Looney - or Wise?

I am a fan of human interest stories, especially those with wry humor and insight into the human spirit. If you are also a fan of that style, this is a must read. The subtitle, "Humorous and Poignant Stories from the Dakotas", says it all; I'm not sure if the emphasis should be on "poignant" or "humorous". "Wednes- day's Ashes" is about a prairie Lutheran church, built in 1886, which withstands a tornado, but burns down on Ash Wednesday as its congregation of 50 or less stands by helplessly. "It Was a Good Thing" is about a transplanted Russian, a North Dakota cowboy, who dies with his dignity intact, having dodged the nursing home experience. That story is followed by, "Chopper", which is about the crusty cowboy's equally crusty stallion who threw "Cowboy" the first ride of each spring, just to remind "Cowboy" who was boss. "Boys of Summer" is about the author's Little League Baseball team - the Bad News Bears before Walter
Matthau's great movie. "Letter to Mike" is a deeply moving tribute to the author's brother, who lives a dignified life in spite of his Williams Syndrome, and who has inspired all who know him with his purity and enthusiasm (you very well may cry as you read this one). These stories are relieved by tales of the writer's frustration with "tech support", and a letter exchange with Dave Barry as to whether or not North Dakota is still there, complete with details about a giant milk cow, liver sausage, Lawrence Welk and Bobby Vee. The Fix-It Man fixes, the mom steals clothes and then mails them to her neighbor, a pathetic dog finds a (pathetic?) friend - it's all here, and at the click of a mouse! It gets a 4 rather than 5 star because frankly, Tony has a sense of humor that evades me sometimes! Is this what they mean by "prairie humor"?

Rare insight

For anyone with a small town or Midwestern background, this is a must read. Bender touches the heart and tickles the funny bone with his columns on the feats and foibles of real people in real life situations. As a compilation of his newspaper columns, "Loons" is an easy read, yet I limited myself to one or two stories per day, in order to savor the emotion conveyed by each. I have given several copies as gifts, and have always been thanked by the recipient for introducing them to this new, gifted author.

A Fun Read

Mr. Bender writes in manner that flows so well he draws you into his stories whether you know the real-life characters or not. It is amazing that in the span of a few well worded paragraphs, your heart and soul can be moved so easily. Just read one of Mr. Bender's stories and I'm sure you'll have to read another. Please keep writing Tony!

Magiera has been studying the Peshitta for over 25 years and has developed an entire database of the New Testament, which will generate an interlinear, concordance, parallel translations, and lexicon, as well as the Light of the Word Ministry translation. Most Accurate Peshitta Interlinear in Print

This three-volume Interlinear New Testament is a great study source for the serious student of Scripture. It includes the Aramaic and English side by side in the order of the Aramaic grammar. It is a vertical interlinear, which means that it is meant to be read top-to-bottom, instead of right-to-left. The far left has the Concordance number for the word, the middle has the Aramaic (in Estrangelo script), the far right has the English translation. Above it is the verse, full translated into English order. Here is an example ("___" represents the Aramaic):

Matthew 27:22
Pilate said to them, "And what should I do to Jesus, who is called the Messiah?" All of them said to him, "He should be crucified!"

Janet Magiera's translation work is very accurate with very little bias. Her work is some of the most reliable for study of the Aramaic Peshitta New Testament, therefore I highly recommend using it.

The Interlinear also uses Estrangelo script, which is, in my opinion, more beautiful than the Hebrew script Roth used in his Aramaic-English New Testament and that Bauscher used in his Interlinear. The downside to using Estrangelo is that it is harder to read, it's almost like learning to read cursive for the first time. The letters sometimes run together, making them hard to read. She includes a pronunciation key at the beginning of each volume, but she doesn't use vowel pointings. The lack of vowels in the Syriac portion reflects that it is a consonantal language (no vowels), but it is still relatively easy to pronounce if you can learn the alphabet.I hate that this Interlinear is in three volumes, which makes it difficult to carry around with you. This volume does have a lot of information in it though, so it would be hard to pack into one volume. Volume I includes Matthew-Luke, Volume II includes John-Galatians, and Volume III has Ephesians-Revelations.

Good Interlinear set, could be more compact, is expensive

Best Aramaic Interlinear set I've found, most useful when combined with the companion dictionary and concordance (together, a five volume set that is not inexpensive). My only complaint is that the vertical "one word at a time" format is not space efficient. This Interlinear would be much more usable if in one volume using a format similar to the Jay Green Greek Interlinear. And, as such, likely more cost efficient.

In summary, though, having found the Aramaic to be the original and the Greek to be translations, this set is now my first "go to" for NT study.

Closer to the King James translation than other versions.

Janet Magiera's translation seems to be very close to the King James translation which I found in other books was not the same. I already know that the King James version leaves something to be desired in that it used only one manuscript and that one was not one of the better ones. However, I still value her books.

About the Author
Mesmer has been a student and practictioner of hypnosis for over 30 years. He came from a show business family, his mother was a piano player in the circus. Mesmer left the entertainment world and went to college where he received an honours degree in psychology. He soon found himself lecturing on and demonstrating the art of hypnosis in his psych classes for different profs due to his already extensive background. It was the back on the road entertaining but there was still a demand for his time for self hypnosis seminars. Mesmer has chosen to record his voice in CD format on several different topics. As time makes the seminars difficult to work into his schedule, he now makes the Mesmer Hypnotic CDs available to the public.
