About the Author
Stan Fulham was born in western Canada in 1923 when the railway linked the people, materials, and livestock of a young, fast growing nation.

As a child, Fulham watched and listened to a fascinating variety of characters as they paraded through the railway station, French army officers in search of cavalry horses, horse traders from the "Big Smokes", and "card-sharpes" from the east in search of easy poker money. Fulham listened to their lively talks with awe and wonder.

The wealth and diversity of these early experiences stirred his interest in their exciting world. As a teenager he 'rode the rods' (freight trains) to the harvest fields of Saskatchewan and Alberta, where he met and was greatly influenced by the hero of this novel - Bronc Coleman.

On his 18th birthday, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served in Bomber Command, was shot down, wounded, and taken prisoner-of-war. He experienced the cold and starving winter of 1944-1945 and a brutal forced march in the final months of the war.

He joined a merchant ship and sailed for two years to the South Pacific Islands, Australia, and South America in search of new challenges. He then returned to the Air Force from which he retired in 1970.

He also worked with aboriginal groups, writing a successful book on aboriginal economic development entitled "In Search of a Future".

IT WAS VERY HARD TO PUT DOWN AND NOT HARD TO GET BACK TO AS YOU LOOKED FORWARD TO LEARNING MORE ABOUT BRONC AND WISPAH. VERY WELL WRITTEN BY AN EXCELLENT AUTHOR WHO OBVIOUSLY DID A GOOD DEAL OF RESEARCH ON THE LIFE AND TIMES OF PEOPLE LIVING IN NORTH AMERICA IN THE TWENTIES AND THIRTIES.. I SHALL RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL MY FRIENDS AND I AM CONFIDENT THEY WILL ALL ENJOY IT AS I DID... GREAT WRITING. DAVID G. FULLER

A classis account of freight mushing in early Alaska

I found this book in a vintage Alaskana bookshop about thirty years ago. Loved it. A great story about musing freight dogs during the gold rush days up around Nome and through the interior. Unfortunately I loaned it out and never got it back. How great that Wolf Creek has reprinted it!

Walden was even greater than this book!

I'm afraid that the other reviewers of this book knew little about Arthur Walden besides the experiences he describes in this book, covering the few years he spent in the Yukon as dogsled freighter, gold prospector, guide, boatman, longshoreman and any other pursuit he found to keep himself alive. He was a brave, ambitious, kind, and ethical man. But beyond that, as I well know, he returned to the lower 48 where he established the Chinook breed of dogs, drove a sled to the summit of Mt. Washington, raced and founded dogsled racing competition in New England. Then he hauled freight by dog in Antarctica for Admiral Byrd, returned home nearly broke and died rescuing his wife from a home fire. Once a hero in NH, he remains in many of our memories as the great man he was. It is a pity more people are kept from reading this book because of price gouging.

Enhancing Marriages

The authors of this book are also authors of college textbooks on "Marriage and Families" and are truly experts on the subject. So, it is no real surprise that this book is so well written and very useful for couples wanting to enhance their marriage or prevent/solve marital problems. As a licensed counselor I offer this text to clients as a 'must read' a guide toward a great marriage partnership. I highly recommend it! Compliments to the authors!

Low in fat - loaded with fun - the best cookbook I own!

This cookbook is full of fabulous recipes that are made from easily obtainable ingredients. The directions are understandable and the finished product tastes terrific. The pages are well designed and filled with interesting tidbits of info about food and thier fat contents. The illustrations really set the humorous tone. It's actually fun to just get the book out to read it even when I don't feel like cooking. Once you make the recipes you won't believe they're low fat! An outstanding book. I can't wait for the next one.

I have lost 73 pounds, and am still going!

This book, and its companion Crazy Plates, are fantastic. Partly with the help of these two books, I have been able to lose 73 pounds since last Christmas (OK, I had a lot to lose! :)) The recipes are more delicious than I thought possible - even preferable to "regular" recipies!
My favorite from this book is the outstanding breakfast omelette recipe. It tastes great, and is extremely simple to make. I could not believe how much of this dish I could eat and still stay legal!
A nice feature of the book is that every recipe has the fat and calorie information listed clearly at the bottom by portion. Take it from a big eater, the portions are generous. We have even lowered the fat and calorie content of several of the dishes in the book ourselves, substituting things like fat free chicken broth instead of standard chicken broth, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Free for butter, egg substitutes for eggs, and black tiger shrimp (less fat and calories) for regular pink shrimp.
Even though I have lost 73 pounds, I have a good bit more to go, with maintenance after that. This book will have a welcome place in our kitchen for years to come!
