I am VERY impressed with this book! I have 5 books on the feasts and this is by far my favorite! Each feast is presented with its purpose for believers today. Amazing spiritual insights, easy to read, Hebrew language connections, church history explanations, celebrations throughout the Bible, always pointing to Yeshua in context are a few of the reasons this book is so excellent. Wonderful book except for inaccurate mileage
By Pamela Solarek
The guys did a good job photographing the falls and giving directions however i've found the sign mileage at each trail to show less than accurate. Lower whitewater falls especially. It is 3 miles each way- not 1.7. I carry an extremely accurate pedometer.

Dr. Norman Bethune fought against injustice and suffering wherever he found it. He provided mobile blood transfusions to the wounded in the Spanish Civil War and saved countless lives with mobile medical units when the Japanese invaded China. He died a hero to the Chinese people.

About the Author

John Wilson was born in 1951 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He did his early growing up on the Island of Skye and in Paisley, near Glasgow. From 1969 to 1974, he attended the University of St. Andrews where he took an Honours B.Sc.. in Geology and never played golf once. He took a position with the Geological Survey of Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). In his two years there, he mapped rocks, dodged land mines and watched the country sink ever deeper into civil war. Shortly before he was due to be called into the army, John retreated back to Britain on his way to the safety of Canada. He settled on Calgary where geology was booming and the only danger was freezing to death in January. In 1979, he moved to Edmonton to take up a post with the Alberta Geological Survey. In 1988 he sold a feature article to the Globe and Mail. This fueled a smouldering mid-life crisis and he took up freelance writing full-time. With some success, John mined the experiences of his travels for articles, journalism and photo essays. He even began to express himself poetically and, with a young family, began writing children's stories. He moved to Nanaimo and then Lantzville on Vancouver Island. John has been widely published by a number of Canadian presses, with his accolades including a shortlisting for the Governor General’s Award.

PREFACE

“How’s the book coming?” said my friend Mary innocently. She was the one who read the draft with a critical eye, and her feedback both encouraged and frightened me.

She told me that she sensed I was holding something back. I knew she was right, because I am a private person. I was hoping that I could keep this a self-explanatory allegory and not explain much about its origins. This book was to be an allegory of suffering and victory, a comparison between the sufferings of the biblical Joseph, who spent years as a falsely accused prisoner, and my family (natural and spiritual), who spent years caring for our husband/ father/son/son-in-law/brother/brother-in-law, and yes, friend, Terry.

Joseph’s ending was truly remarkable. He moved from chief prisoner to Pharaoh’s viceroy in the twinkling of an eye. When my husband Terry became ill with leukemia, I thought that his (our) end would be similar.

I was wrong. We humans often are. But I continued with the writing of this book, and continued to keep out our personal story as much as possible.

Mary saw it differently. She challenged me with these words: “Plunge into the deep.”

She had no idea what she was telling me.

A few months before my husband Terry died, I wrote these words as part of the Preface:

“Later, as Terry began to recover, only to relapse and endure the horror of a bone marrow transplant, I was given more and more to say about this Joseph story that I felt we were re-living. I was given other poems too, poems that have sustained me through years of hard yet strangely wondrous waiting. And I have found that the waiting has produced a growing peace and an incredible confidence in God’s ability to make us whole, and then heal us. I will not tell you any more details, except to say that Terry is alive and healing. And so am I.

“I am glad that it is God’s hand covering our lives, and not the hand of another.

“Our prayer is that anyone who has suffered—not just from illness, but from anything—would find perspective and strength to continue on their own spiritual journey.”

After he died, I thought the book was in vain. Everything was hollow, as it so often is after such a loss. But I have come to believe (even though I don’t yet fully understand) that these words are still true. Terry is alive and healing. And so am I.

The story of Joseph in the Bible is a very popular and powerful one with all its connotations and possible life applications. Joseph's struggle through life after his brothers threw him in a pit and then later sold him into slavery has implications for all of us dealing with the likes of jealousy, sibling rivalry, parental love, forgiveness, faith and hope. Diane Proctor Reeder has taken that story and charted Joseph's life alongside that of her family's struggle with a life and death situation in A DIARY OF JOSEPH, A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY THROUGH TIME.

Ms. Reeder uses poetry and a little narration to compare the similarities between Joseph's struggles and her family's battle with leukemia. At the onset, it would appear that the two were not the same, but this carefully plotted spiritual journal boldly marks all of the similarities. The book was set up in chapters that fully explored all the different stages that Joseph and this family went through in their journey. She even gives a look at her conversations with God. My favorite chapters were The Pit and The Bottom, in which Reeder compares the pit and the jail Joseph was thrown into to the pit her family entered with the initial diagnosis of leukemia for her husband. If you can imagine how Joseph must've felt alone in that dark pit or the jail waiting for God to do something, then imagine how it must have felt to have the man you love, one day healthy and the next dealing with a possible life-threatening disease and then waiting for God to deliver him. The feelings explored were deep despair, fear, anxiety and hope.

For such a small book, A DIARY OF JOSEPH packs a really big spiritual punch for everyone. The lesson I learned from these pages is that no matter how deep your pit of despair, there is something better that God is working out. We build spiritual muscle when we're going through and learning to depend on God. We just have to keep an open dialogue with Him and remember that He alone is the author and finisher of our lives. Not being a big reader of poetry, I must interject that this was a well-crafted book in which each poem really spoke to me on a level that I could understand and relate. I would recommend anyone in need of a spiritual lift, particularly if you're facing a crisis, to please read this book. You will come away with a new perspective on faith and hope.

Inspired

I read this book from cover to cover in one sitting. I could not put it down. I was encouraged to keep on my journey through the delicate way crisis and hope was woven into the pages. I hope anyone who may need spiritual direction in their life would read this book. Also if you are trying to make sense of the rollercoaster ride that you are living; this book will help you to find peace amongst its pages. The writer was very clever in her literary style. It made me think and want to read more to see how she would tell the next part of the story. I hope she will write more books of inspiration in the future.

What a great idea...It helped me build my dock

The book goes through a series of design considerations. Each chapter builds upon the previous on. The author shares many valuable concepts that I had not thought about. I not only learned about docks, I learned about my lake. A short book, but packed full with useful information. The assembly instructions were detailed and easy to follow. The blueprints gave the exact dimensions for every single piece. The author even has the exact number of screws needed for each design. A little expensive, but the color graphics and presentation make it worth every penny!

About the Author
Kathy Alba, a native of Los Angeles, received her B.A. summa cum laude in English (with minors in psychology and French) from Oregon State University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in English and linguistics from the University of North Carolina.

One of Kathy’s main professional focuses is her teaching, having been an award-winning adjunct professor of English in several colleges and universities across Kansas for some seventeen years. She speaks with authority but always with passion and the belief that only humor can make learning into an adventure rather than a pain in the neck, that if you’re laughing, you’ll probably be relaxed enough to understand and take in new, even complex ideas. In response to the needs of her students and people in the larger community, she has written this off-the-wall book on "empowered" English and another on study skills. As director of Bear Hollow Educational Systems—a nationwide seminar series designed for corporations, college campuses, and city groups—she speaks with compassion and uses the book to inspire, nurture, and help people move closer to their personal fulfillment.

Her other primary focus is writing. Concertos in D Major, a relationship novel about a lovely violinist on the wild north coast of Oregon, may be ordered from Amazon.com or bookstores now. Another one, Releasing Hatshepsut, follows a photojournalist to an archaeological dig in Egypt and an even greater dig into her own soul. While admittedly an adrenaline-challenged non-athlete, Kathy is passionate about researching the details of her books in bizarre ways if necessary—including rock climbing, white-water rafting, kayaking, sailing (in gale winds), combing European capitols along with the ruins of Greece, Jordan, Israel and Egypt and humiliating herself on the back of a camel—because such adventures force her, ready or not, to grow beyond her natural state of self-avowed wimp-hood.

Kathy is also founder and chief artist of both Bear Hollow Art Works, a studio that makes stained glass and hand-dressed teddy bears, and Frills and Furbelows by Kathy Alba, a line of originally designed hand-crocheted and knitted Victorian ladies’ fashions, heirloom wedding outfits, and vintage accessories.

She currently resides at ivy-covered Bear Hollow in Wichita, Kansas with her husband, several beloved dogs and uncountable stuffed bears. Her son is a medical student and classical violinist.

For anyone seeking to improve their ability to speak & write

An invaluable acquisition for family, school, and community library reference collections, Speaking And Writing Well is highly recommended for anyone seeking to improve their ability to speak and write, and would be ideal reading for anyone learning English as a second language.

If I could, I would give the book 2.5 stars. The author does a good job on trying to keep the reader entertained with the examples she uses, however, at times I feel she overdoes it. The book could be better organized. She jumps from one topic to next uncontrollably, at times, leaving the reader hanging. For a book on English, I'm surprised by her lengthy sentences and paragraph structure. Her paragraphs often focus on multiple topics. It's also hard to keep up with her train of thoughts. Sometimes I wonder if she was on a caffeine high when she was writing it. She just overdoes it. For example, it's cute the first couple times she says repeat "I saw him, I saw him, I saw him." After a couple chapters, these quirks get to be a little annoying. (My students' would have received a failing grade had their paragraphs and sections lacked this much focus.)

Her pictures of teddy bears on every page are just a complete waste of space. I can tell the author is a sweet, gentle and nice lady, but her book is written for a less educated audience. I was very disappointed after receiving the book. I thought it would be a book about learning to talk with power, confidence and prestige, but Kathy only uses examples that you should already have learned in elementary school. For example, I had eaten, I went versus I had gone. It's a waste to purchase it if you know basic English. She also brings up German grammar and compares it to English, which is completely irrelevant. She's demonstrating her knowledge of other languages, not helping you to improve your English.
