About the Author
Paul Grey was born in Nanaimo in 1951. His family has lived in Nanaimo and area for well over 100 years. He teaches at Coal Tyee Elementary School situated above the Northfield mining shaft his father worked as a young man. In 1993 Paul won the local Prime Minister's Awards for an environmental teaching project with his Grade 3 students. Three years later he won a provincial level Prime Minister's Award. In 1997 he won a Royal Bank fellowship to Queen's University in Ontario for his work in Information Technology. Paul has worked on several science projects with the Mid Island Science & Technology Council (MISTIC). He has been recognized for his outstanding science work and received a lithograph as the outstanding science teacher of BC in 1999. Paul has written four books including Easykayaker: a Guide to Laid-back Vancouver Island Paddling and Kayaking Vancouver Island: Great Trips from Port Hardy to Victoria. Paul is a co-founder of the Wave Publications Cooperative.

Gary Backlund has helped organize the last four Vancouver Island Paddlefests held in Ladysmith, BC. He is a house designer and building consultant and has delivered workshops on housing maintenance for First Nation communities throughout BC and the Yukon. Gary and his daughter, Katherine are the volunteer wardens for the Woodley Range Ecological Reserve, the home of 29 rare plant species. Gary and his family own and operate a British Columbia Managed Forest. Gary also sits on the Cowichan Valley Regional District's Round Table on the Environment.

A WONDERFUL TOOLKIT CHANGED THE PAINFUL PROCESS OF WRITING REFFERENCE LETTERS INTO A BREEZE

I love this book! I'm a TA and was asked by a former student for a reference letter. I usually regard this as a time-consuming and painful procedure, though I personally really want to help them with their academic pursuits.

triathlon log

for the most part i like the log, it has more than enough data for each day of the week, and I do like the monthly totals and averages page. The only negative for me was that I would like to see a box for the Max HR of each workout and I wish there was more room to write the specific details of each workout, such as how many intervals with what amount of rest, or what type of swim workout was completed. Other than that it is a great log and can be modified to meet your own needs.

About the Author
Dr. Shawn Carlson wrote "The Amateur Scientist" for Scientific American magazine until March of 2001. In 1994 he founded the Society for Amateur Scientists; a non-profit organization dedicated to helping amateur scientists of all ages and experience levels get involved in exciting front-line research projects, often working alongside professional scientists involved in actual research. He is a 1999 winner of a MacArthur "genius" award for his contributions to amateur Science.

Dr. Sheldon Greaves was a technical writer for a variety of Silicon Valley software companies, and a research associate at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a contributing editor for Amateur Scientist Bulletin, the official newsletter of the Society for Amateur Scientists.

The format of that files that are you buying, OK in Linux

This review is based on using the Amateur Scientist CD on my ancient Fedora Core 5 Linux machine. (I have not tried the other CD of "science software" that comes with the product.)

I suppose commenting on the Amazon product description is fair game when reviewing an item. The current description doesn't tell the customer exactly what kind of files he is buying. As one critical reviewer said, these are HTML files. To use these files in a naive fashion, you would figure out the folder that contained the column you wanted to read and then figure out which file is the "parent" of all the files in the column. If you open a random file in the directory you might find yourself looking at a single diagram or equation. One way to organize a cd of HTML files would be to have a home page that could serve as a starting point to navigate to all the other pages. There is such a page (home.html) on this CD, but you cannot use it unless you first run a file (Open1st_Linux) that starts a local webserver.

I copied the CD to my hard drive. I run Open1st_Linux from a terminal. It prins a message saying that it has started a webserver on port 1594. When I click on my hard drive's version of home.html (from the file browser) then the Firefox web browser opens on a functional html page [...] with search and browse features. I get all of them to work except "browse by topic", which gives me an error about a file not being found. I suspect that this problem is fixable but I haven't tried to fix it. You can search the columns for keywords or look them up by publication date.

In summary, you are buying is the columns in HTML format but you must run a program to have an effective way to navigate these pages. The program provided for Linux works to my satisfaction but it was not documented in the directions provided on the CD.

It would be nice if an expert in dealing with HTML files would write review that mentions how some general purpose HTML software could be used on the collection of HTML files on this CD.

Information added Jan 23, 2010: I received an email from another Steve, who advises:

I'm no HTML expert, however I did open up a couple of the top level index pages in an HTML editor, & noticed that in the file

/Library/The Amateur Scientist/content/amsci01/index.htm

[where "/Library/The Amateur Scientist" is where I copied the CD to], that if you look closely at the code from lines 38 to 56,

you'll see a number of lines such as

Archeology etc.

Note carefully that the indecies directory should actually start with LOWER-CASE i, to match the directory structure copied across from the CD.
Change the "I" to "i" for each line, save as the new index.htm, reload the search-page, & that should do the trick.

(Now using Fedora Core 12) I followed those directions. I replaced "indexes/Indecies" by "indexes/indecies" (9 occurences). After that, opening index.htm with the Firefox browser gave me the functionality of navigating all the pages. The search engine feature didn't work. (The "sponsored ads" on the margins of the articles didn't work, but who cares?)

If you decide to make a Cd containing a copy of the corrected version, use the command line "mkisofs" to make the *.iso image and then burn it. On Fedora Core 12, the gui driven "Brasero" burner pops up hundreds of screens asking "Do you really want to add the file...." when you try to make a cd from the files instead of an .iso.

At last...more projects!

I fell in love with Stong's book back in Junior High in the mid-70's. I eventually found my own copy (in better condition than the one I remember) and have enjoyed it tremendously. I always wondered why they didn't update it and re-issue it. It is such a classic.
Well, now they have. Although the Stong book is not so hard to find as some think (there are nine copies for sale over at Abebooks right now), they can be expensive (Abebooks lowest price: 25 dollars. Next lowest: 60 dollars. Highest: 250 dollars. Not many at the low end). Here is the perfect solution: for a mere 40 dollars, you get all the original great articles that Stong included, plus everything else! It is so wonderful to have modern articles using modern items. It makes the projects so much more accessible.
If you love science or love tinkering with projects, or just love reading about the clever things you COULD do, then this item is for you. Another instant classic, if you don't buy it now, you may regret it later.
I have found the interface easy to use, too. In every way, this item takes it's place as one of the more treasured items on my book-shelf (or CD rack!). Buy it now, it is the right thing to do.

Complete? Bet your life on it!

For the record, I wrote "The Amateur Scientist" column for over 5 years and I put this CD collection together, as well as several printed compendiums from the column. So, of course, my 5-star rating, while shared by many reviewers, is clearly biased. I am posting this note to rebut the false and defamatory charges made by an un-named reviewer in N. Easton, MA who insists that I secretly abridged the articles by leaving out key text and illustrations.
The reviewer's claims of missing information paint with broad strokes. However, he mentions only one column-- the November 1958 article (a favorite of mine, by the way) that describes a wonderful device known as the Hilsch vortex tube. He says "...the original article contained [the information on the CD] as well as building and testing instructions for an amateur built version, two detailed construction drawings, and two performance data graphs - including one for Rudolph Hilsch's original results."
As I write this, next to my left hand sits a photostatic copy of the original text of C. L. Stong's article as it appeared in Scientific American magazine. I have just completed a careful comparison of that text against the article on the CD-ROM and they are, as near as I can tell, absolutely identical. The original text contains one and only one illustration of the famed device, and every single paragraph that is present in the original is also present on the CD.
The reviewer no doubt owns a copy of Stong's much sought-after book that presents a small number of projects from "The Amateur Scientist". Magazines always impose restrictions on length that books do not. Just as I expanded and commented on articles in my own printed compendiums from the column (see, for instance "The Amateur Biologist", available on Amazon), so Stong also expanded on the columns he originally published. The N. Easton reviewer made the serious error of assuming that Stong's book contained only pristine reproductions of the original text. Had he gone to the library to check the original columns, he would have discovered this not to be the case. That error led him to a totally erroneous conclusion.
I want everyone to be clear on this point. The reason why I didn't use the word "abridged" on the CD is because it is not abridged in any way. To the very best of my knowledge the CD contains every single word and illustration of every single Amateur Scientist article that EVER appeared in Scientific American. (If someone ever discovers any omission, not matter how small, I will fix the master at once!) That's over 72 years worth of material. The CD also contains over 1,000 pages of additional technical how-to material that never appeared in Scientific American.
Why did I faithfully reproduce all this material? Because the reviewer is right about one thing. This material IS important. It is part of the heritage of scientific thought. I grew up with the column. And I added it to. That's why I stuck so religiously to the original text. I look at this compendium as a central part of my own legacy to science and science literacy.

Excellent family Haggadah

We used this Haggadah at our Sedar this Passover with our two non-Jewish guests and found it full of interesting information and explanations. Very informative for our guests and us too! It has a number of more egalitarian adaptations, very appropriately inclusive for girls as well as boys. I particularly enjoyed the fact that there were both short and long versions of the rituals - helps when you have to be concerned with time. Nice illustrations too! Seems to have everything you might need for your Sedar.

A Haggadah for everyone

This Haggadah has something for everyone in our family. It allows us the flexibility to tailor our Seder to those who attend. My young children especially enjoy looking at the illustrations the author has included. The adults in our family find the extra readings included to add special meaning to the Seder. This Haggadah is easy to read and follow and has wonderful explainations to help when our non-Jewish friends join us for our Seder service. It even includes preparation instructions for Passover. This is the only Haggadah our family uses!

Few of us know of the drama surrounding the establishment of roads and especially of a transcontinental road. 1912 was a year of little state funding for roads, and very limited federal funding, of few if any road maps, of dominance by railroads, and of mud holes passing for roads. Small groups of private citizens were driven by desperation to do what governments were not doing. The Yellowstone Trail Association was one of the first of those groups. Always underfunded yet optimistic, these men established, through grass roots efforts, a strong organization and a 3500 mile route across the northern tier of states. Their plan was to link existing east-west county and township roads together by persuading county boards to put their road dollars into the Yellowstone Trail and establish a definite path fir! st to the Yellowstone National Park and then across the nation. As the organization grew, state-by-state, so grew the Trail.

The organization behind the Trail was founded by very small businessmen, farmers and ranchers who had no great public relations acumen. They certainly advertised, but their efforts centered upon handing out maps, running information bureaus, and persuading county boards, and then later, state offices, to build better roads. Their budget was always laughably small and they charged very little to be a member, only $1.00 per year in the beginning. They had no source of wealth. The Lincoln Highway, on the other hand, was begun a year later, 1913, by wealthy automotive manufacturers who had the wherewithal to fund massive advertising campaigns. They also wrote books about themselves. This legacy has rendered that organization more memorable than the Yellowstone Trail, but not more successful nor more long-lived. They both suffered at the hands of government-sponsored road numbering in 1926. And by 1930 they were both out of business.

There is no ?mother lode? of information about the Yellowstone Trail and its parent Association. There was a small body of founders and there was a general manager, but, when the Association ceased to exist in 1930, the boxes of records of annual meetings disappeared, leaving only a slim file of materials in the South Dakota State Historical Archives. The strength of the organization laid with hundreds and hundreds of volunteers scattered coast to coast. The authors scoured myriads of museums, libraries, archives, and attics for tid bits and pictures with which they pieced together an historic mosaic. Weekly newspapers of towns along the Trail revealed an avid interest on the part of the populace in the Trail for those 18 years, oftentimes printing conflicting details, but united in their unbridled support of a road which would bring fame, fortune and tourists to their communities. Those newspapers also revealed a dynamic of life different from ours, 90 or 80 years later. ! Oral histories, generously supplied by some very senior citizens who recalled the Trail, provide some human interest tales.

This is an introductory book only, so that the last chapter, which contains maps and suggestions for travel on existing portions of the Trail, can only scratch the surface. But state general maps are included for the present-day driver. A more complete book of maps of the Trail is in the works. All maps were created with a GPS, original Yellowstone Trail Association maps, and four years of patient driving with laptops along the two Interstates, nine state roads, and countless county and state roads, and abandoned paths that mark the Trail. We have even driven on no roads, just overgrown tracks on present-day ranches.

There is a resurgence of interest in the Trail. South Dakota has recently marked the Trail in its state from border to border. Minnesota has several state markers on its portion of the Trail. Montana is planning to put up ?state history? signs along the Trail, and four county visitors and convention bureaus in Wisconsin have launched a tourist attraction campaign along the Trail.

We hope the reader will understand the times of 90 years ago and the frustrations of men of vision who faced insurmountable odds to see their dream finally materialize. Come along for an historic ride, and then drive the Trail in your neighborhood. Enjoy!

Before there were maps or road numbers or even paved roads, early autoists sought routes to drive. This is the history of the development of an early transcontinental auto route called the Yellowstone Trail. The U.S. 1912-1930 provides a dramatic backdrop to this dynamic story.

About the Author
John and Alice Ridge are both retired university professors who became seriously interested in the Yellowstone Trail four years ago. John?s father had told tales of the Trail he took to Yellowstone Park in the 1920's, and he left a faded family picture album. With time now available and research skills honed from two lifetimes in academia, the Ridges began to search for what is left of the Trail and for the story of its founding. This search revealed many avenues of potential research into American history. This search also revealed the fact that ferreting out bits of history took much time, especially matching conflicting stories to gain a truth. But then, no one ever said that piecing together a bit of history from original sources was easy.

No one before has told the story about the Yellowstone Trail. The Ridges found that people today do not know of the Yellowstone Trail, so this little introductory work was published.

Great Book!

This is a wonderful book. Very well researched and very interesting to read. This belongs in the collection of any arm chair historian or active motorist. Read before traveling anywhere in the northern US. Love the maps, too!

Yellowstone Trail History

for you to follow. It does contain a lot of references at the end of each chapter if you wish
to do more research of your own.

From the Author

I wrote this book in response to the many requests made of me in my teaching across the country. The people I teach, mostly physical therapists and fitness trainers, asked me to put a text together to update the video, and to lay out the complexities of the golf swing in a simple format that would be easy to understand. I am very happy with the book, because I was able to cover numerous areas of interest to the golfer. My investigation on the Mental side lead to David Cook, PhD, who's program I adopted in our Seattle Golf Academy program. You will find the Mental Side methodology easy to implement, and very, very effective. Finally, I included additional exercise for total body conditioning for those folk who wanted to go further, and exercise their whole body in a functional fashion. Finally, a word on effectiveness in training golfers functionally. The best way to do this is in the words of a recent student. At 40 years old, Walter wanted to improve his distance to move from a 10 handicap to a single digit player. Three exercise sessions, and here is what he had to say: "My shoulder turn is significantly greater and I am longer off the tee. Whereas I could not reach the long par fours in regulation, I've had no trouble doing so since after the third exercise session. In fact, I shot two rounds in the 70's for the first time in my life. This morning, I played six holes to one under before I came in to the office. I am thrilled with my progress." After almost 20 years of working with golfers, I am confident that this program will help you like no other can. Player after player has added yards, reduced their score, increased their shoulder turn, reduced their aches and pains, and on and on. I encourage you to build the skills you need on the golf course, but to do so with a healthy body, and a sharper brain. Fairways and Greens!

About the Author
A 1982 graduate of the University of Washington Physical Therapy program, Neil runs a busy clinical practice, Sports Reaction Center, in Bellevue, Washington. In 1991, Neil joined the clinical faculty of the UW Medical School, where he teaches specific classes to the graduating physical therapy students. He earned his Masters of Orthopedic Manual Therapy in 1993. Neil is published in the medical literature, with a chapter in the 3rd ed. Common Musculoskeletal Disorders (1996), and also in Orthopedic Physical Therapy Clinics of North America (Dec 1999). Neil is a co-founder of Seattle Golf Academy, a golf school for serious golfers.

Neil is a busy father, coaching his 4 children in various sports. He plays on a competitive soccer team in a local men's league, and he pursues his golf game with an equal passion. Neil and his family live in the Seattle area.=20

Just too much

It's good information, but more than I'll ever need by a factor of 5. There is a very useful technique for scoring your game, so you have a record of exactly what happened on the course, and you know what to work on. But, there is just too much for me, a beginning golfer, and for my brother (I tried to pawn it off on him), who's a mid-level player. I wish I'd returned it.

My back has never felt better.

Like many golfers, my back has given me problems for years. After 2 sessions with the exercises from this book, I felt like there had never been a problem! On top of that, my game is changing for the better. These exercises are GOLF SPECIFIC: in some cases they seem very similar to the golf swing; in others, they aren't but they work the parts of my body needed in a good swing. I noticed the very next round that I felt different just standing on the first tee: grounded, solid, and healthy. In fact that whole round I kept commenting to my friend that this was what it was like to play pain-free.
The bottom line is that my shots are getting better while I'm working out. In other words I've got more time in my day.
By the way, this author also has a video-taped workout of these exercises that I use at home. It's a 20 minute routine, each exercise timed out and with a short break between them. It's very helpful to work along with the tape, and especially to see the taped exercises, then read about them in more detail in the book.

Finally a golf conditioning book that makes sense!

I found this book very helpful. I understand the golf swing better as a result of reading it, and the exercises make sense! The many photographs make the exercises easy to understand, and I can feel my shoulder turn improving as a result. After working in front of a mirror with the exercises, I am getting into much, much better positions, especially on the takeaway. When I hit balls, I am making better contact, and have gained yards with every club. But the best part of the book for me is the Mental Side section. A practical mental side approach better that any I have found to date. This is a very good resource for any golfer.
