Old world knowledge of log framing artistry

From the back cover; "Architect, teacher, scholar and writer Hermann Phleps was born on June 1, 1877 in Birthalm, Transylvania (now Biertan, Romania). He studied at the Technische Hochschulen in Vienna and Karlsruhe before completing his doctoral work in Dresden. For some thirty-eight years, he lectured at the Technische Hochschulen (Polytechnic) in Danzig. Renowned as one of the "Old Masters" in the field of timber building and wooden architecture, he was the author of a dozen major works and more than one hundred and fifty essays and articles on a broad array of subjects in the fields of building, architecture and design. He died in Marburg, West Germany in 1964 at the age of eighty-six."
This 328 page big book contains dozens of photos of old world artistically built log structures of all kinds, some simple, some elaborate, as well as hundreds of quality drawings of log construction from notch and window details to the entire building. Text describes everything about woods, different types of roofing materials, how to make shingles..the list is endless. Heavily illustrated with line drawings and photographs, this book by German architect Hermann Phleps, has gained recognition as a definitive work on the ancient European tradition of horizontal log construction. The book is long out of print and nearly impossible to obtain in the original.

This book is about old European "Works of Heart"

Hermann Phleps was a very gifted historian and architect who was able to record in photos and wonderfully detailed pen and ink drawings, the treasure of solid wood construction. The book was originally published in Germany in 1944 and later translated into English so that we could share in the detailed history of log and solid wood construction techniques used from northern Scandinavia to the Alps, from France to Central Europe. As a log home designer and builder, I find it an endless source of ideas and visual evidence that solid wood construction is both a viable body of construction techniques and a display of handcraftsmanship and "Works of Heart." It is said that a laborer works with his or her hands; a craftsman, their hands and their head and an artist, their hands, their head and their heart. This book shows how long that has been true and sets a target for us to strive for once again.
