About the Author
With the fundamental belief that God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things, Kevin Wayne Johnson lives to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. His passion is reflected through his national best-selling book series (Give God the Glory!) that have earned 17 literary awards since 2001, all published through his Christian-based publishing company Writing for the Lord Ministries, as a former radio and television host, and in several leadership positions within the local church, the Christian publishing industry, and the National Association of the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana). A native of Richmond, Virginia, Johnson was introduced to the Bible and the Christian doctrine as a child and active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. At the age of eight, his maternal grandmother (Granny), a devout Seventh Day Adventist, prophesied that he would preach the gospel in due season. From these planted seeds, Johnson, alongside his wife, Gail, confessed Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior on May 2, 1993. This spiritual transformation occurred slightly less than two months after their marriage on March 6th. An active member and Pastor of Discipleship at Celebration Church, Columbia, Maryland, he serves the congregation by leading all ministry and Bible training for its 2,000-plus members. Our purpose is to educate God s people and to provide opportunities through Biblical teaching, learning, training and mentoring for persons to grow to become like Christ. In parallel, Johnson serves on the Purpose Management Team and is an ordained clergy by the Church of God (Chesapeake, Delaware, Potomac district). On the national level, he serves as Secretary, National Association of the Church of God Men s Ministry. Johnson was initially ordained into the Christian ministry as a deacon at Shiloh Pentecostal Church, Incorporated, Christian Love Center, Somerville, New Jersey, with his wife, on May 21, 2000. Johnson is a professional in government as well as private industry. For 25 years, he has performed successfully in numerous middle and senior-level positions in the areas of workforce development, training, organizational change, acquisition/procurement, customer service, client relationships, and program management, to include the National Security Agency, Department of the Treasury, the Government of the District of Columbia, Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, Department of the Army, Defense Logistics Agency, and in the private sector at Vivendi Universal and Reuters America. He has testified before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Small Business, and has prepared testimony that was presented before the District of Columbia Committee on Government Operations. Johnson is a graduate of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School s Executive Potential Program (1996). During this program, he assisted the Office of Federal Procurement Policy with several procurement reform initiatives that were tied to the National Performance Review under the Clinton Administration. In 1999, he was awarded the distinction of Fellow by the National Contract Management Association Board of Directors. Pastor Johnson maintains an active involvement in community service and retains membership in several professional and civic organizations to include the National Contract Management Association and the Virginia Commonwealth University Alumni Association.

About the Author
Dr. Schimmels and his wife Mary have taught and lectured in many countries, most recently as a Cooperative Studies Distinguished Teaching Fellow at Zheijiang Normal University in Jinhua, China. He provided direction for an innovative curriculum reform project that is re-designing the way middle school teachers are trained in Zhejiang Province.

Cliff was a professor of education at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, and previously taught for 17 years at Wheaton College in Illinois. Cliff has authored more than thirty books, both non-fiction and fiction. He has won the Mark Twain award for fiction twice for his Wheatheart Chronicles. He is a contributor to The 6th Chicken Soup for the Soul. Cliff was also much in demand as a popular speaker in North America and around the world. Mary assisted him at Lee University and joined him on his travels.

Cliff and Mary have three children and four grandchildren. Cliff Schimmels passed away in 2001.

People! The distinguishing characteristic of China is people. The ancient temples are provocative. The Great Wall is inspiring. The Himalayas are beautiful. The trains are interesting. But the sharp characteristic - the one that grabs you first and stays with you throughout your stay - is the almost indescribable and incomprehensible volume of people. Everywhere, people!

Statistics? 1.4 billion! But what does it all mean? Just a lot of people? No, it's much more than that. Try multiplying by four. How many vehicles pass through the green light? Twenty? No, eighty! How many people stand in line at the tourist trap? One hundred? No, four hundred! How many students in the second grade class? Twenty? No, eighty! How many girls in a college dormitory room? Two? No, eight! How many students apply for admission to study for a degree? Five hundred? No, two thousand! How many people sit down to supper every night? Two hundred and seventy million? No, 1.4 billion!

When we think of China in any context - business opportunities, comparable military strength, social policy, institutions, exchange programs, and evangelical opportunities - we have to ground our thinking on the phenomenon of the volume of people. It is difficult to understand anything about China until we understand that fact.

Statistics? 1.4 billion - just another number. But when you get past the teeming hordes in the streets, when you get past the crowd in the shops, when you get past the shoulder-to-shoulder jostling on the buses, when you get past the thousands of workers working side-by-side digging a ditch or building a road, when you get past the sense of the multitude, you will find that each one of those 1.4 billion people is a person created by God in the image of God, badly in need of a Savior.

Wonderful Little Book

I really enjoyed this little book. Each chapter is only a page or two long but each one offers a glimpse into some part of Chinese culture that differs greatly from our own.

I loved the way that the author shared things he noticed and found so interesting but didn't try to draw conclusions. For example, I was fascinated about how children all read out loud at the same time and that no one waits in lines. Just little things like that and he has left it to us to go do our own research about the reasons for some of these things.

If I were going on a trip to China, I would definitely want to read this before I went. Maybe some of these things have changed since the book was written but if not, at least you are ready for some of those wonderful differences.

The best compliment I can give Mr. Schimmels is that because of this book, I went out and bought several other books about China--simply because he has gotten my curiosity up. And, THAT, is the real measure of a teacher. To make the student want to learn more.

About the Author
Janice Bennett started out as a graphic artist with several companies, which led to the formation of her own studio. She began to study Spanish in 1990, and was awarded a Master of Arts in Spanish Literature from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1997. She has been teaching Spanish Literature for the past five years, and has written a guide to literary analysis. She has traveled extensively in Spain, including five visits to the Cathedral of Oviedo, and has been translating the work of the Spanish Center of Sindonology for several years. Her most recent translation is the photographic guide to the Exposition of the Sudarium in the year 2000, by Jorge-Manuel Rodríguez Almenar.

A Relic of the Burial of Jesus?

Bennett traces the history of the survival and veneration of a presumed relic of the death and burial of Jesus of Nazareth, a relic about which relatively little has been known outside Spain, where it has been kept since the eighth century. The relic is a square of linen about the size of a handtowel, and was presumably used to cover the face of Jesus'corpse before he was removed from the cross, and remained over his face until his corpse was placed into the tomb, where a clean shroud replaced it (the Shroud of Turin?) A separate face cloth which was rolled up and placed to the side of the entombed corpse is explicitly mentioned in the discovery of the empty tomb account in John's gospel. The markings (bloodstains, etc) on the Sudarium match quite strikingly the stains on and about the head of the figure on the Shroud of Turin. Since the Sudarium has been in Spain without question since the eighth century, Bennett feels this underscores the currently admitted inaccuracy of the carbon dating of the Shroud of Turin, which originally estimated the Shroud to have dated only from the Middle Ages. Bennett's writing is impassioned, and she makes an effort to separate legend (pious and otherwise)from historically supportable evidence, while clearly respecting the authenticity of any uninterrupted or unchallenged tradition in the history of the Western Church.

A nice introduction to a relic you've never heard of before

I had never heard of the Sudarium of Oviedo until I came across this book. Janice Bennett does a nice job explaining what a sudarium was, why the Israelites used it in cases where the dead person had been disfigured and why this particular sudarium is so important.

The best part of the book is on ancient Jewish burial customs because it helps explain so much about the burial of Jesus and what came after. Bennett also explains how the Sudariam got to Spain. If you've read about the Shroud of Turin this is a must have companion book.

A detailed, but beautifully explained and thrilling account

Being a Spaniard, I had never known of the Oviedo sudarium until very recently. Looking for books on the matter, I found this piece here in Amazon and decided to purchase it.

I can say that it is a vivid and detailed account of the history of this cloth and how it has survived to our time, with a documented history that goes back until way before the Middle Ages and in custody in Oviedo for over a thousand years, and yet mostly unknown to the Spanish people. Its mere existence, its material, marks, biological and microscopical contents, and the forensic studies explained and depicted in the book call for a careful reconsideration of the authenticity of the shroud in Torino.

I completely recommend this book about the most astonishing relic in Oviedo. Bennett's work is captivating and enjoyable... well, if you are ready to read about a most horrible death.

Bennett summarises the challenge every person has to face in relation to this cloth: everything on and around the relic, as well as its nature and contents, scream that it is authentic. If we, the conspiracy-addicted modern people, try to find alternative explanations of the origin of the cloth, it is just because of our difficulty to believe.

About the Author
Skye and Lake are dedicated to each other, and to hiking, in that order. Their second date was a 32-km (20-mile) dayhike in Arizona. Since then they haven’t stopped for long. (In celebration of 20 years of adventurous travel together, they change their names from Kathy and Craig Copeland to Skye and Lake Nomad.)

They’ve trekked through much of the world’s vertical topography, including the Himalayas, Patagonian Andes, Pyrenees, Swiss Alps, Scottish Highlands, Dolomites, Sierra Nevada, North Cascades, Colorado Rockies, New Zealand Alps, and canyons of the American Southwest. In 1989, they moved from the U.S. to Canada, so they could live near the Canadian Rockies—the range that inspired the first of their refreshingly unconventional guidebooks.

While living in Vancouver, British Columbia, they explored the Coast Mountains and the North Cascades, then wrote hiking guidebooks on each of those ranges. Later, while living in a cabin on Kootenay Lake (between B.C.’s Purcell and Selkirk mountains), they researched and wrote two more hiking guidebooks: one on the Kootenays, the other on the premier trails of southern B.C.

Skye and Lake have since returned to the Canadian Rockies and now live in Canmore, Alberta. Their desire to hike, however, keeps them travelling constantly. For example, they migrate each spring and fall to the high-desert canyon country of southern Utah. Their guidebook on that sensual, other-worldly landscape promises to be especially stimulating.

But Skye and Lake agree: no matter how arduous the trail, or how severe the conditions, hiking is the easiest of the many tasks necessary to create a guidebook. What they find most challenging is having to sit. They spend twice as much time at their computers—writing, organizing, editing, checking facts, rewriting, re-organizing, re-editing, re-checking facts—as they do on the trail.

Great sampling of many of BC's premiere hikes

This book has an excellent smattering of day and extended hikes in a variety of locations in the southern half of British Columbia. BC is a hiker's dream - you could spend a lifetime exploring all the mountain ranges and watersheds in this province. The authors have done a good job of selecting enough of a dream list to get you started. It's totally subjective in that the authors have included only what they believe are the "must do" hikes. We've done several of them and so far I can confirm that their choices are excellent and the trip details are accurate and generally helpful without being too much information. There are a lot of opinions thrown in and I do think some of it doesn't serve much of a purpose except as a personal soapbox. I've logged a lot of miles in my hiking boots, but one day I could very well be too old to hike into some of these backcountry locations under my own steam. I'd like to know that when I'm 85 or 90 I might be able to helicopter in to visit Berg Lake, for instance. However, the authors would judge that to be cheating. But what the heck, it's their book and it's still a good one.

You gotta have Gotta Hike BC

My wife and I took a two-week vacation last September driving from the Rockies to Vancouver. It 's great this guidebook covers all the incredible mountain ranges in southern British Columbia, so we needed only one book. We've hiked often in the Rockies national parks of Alberta, but this book describes hikes in the Rockies that are just west of the parks. And we were usually alone on the trails. Then we hiked in the snowcapped Selkirks of Glacier NP (Canada's not the U.S.). We did a few dayhikes in the Kootenays around Nelson, BC. before heading to the Coast Mtns between Vancouver and Whistler. The hikes were all terrific. And the directions were easy to follow--to the trailheads and on the trail. Gotta Hike was fun to read in the car too. It's a hiking guide with personality. Don't miss getting this book or experiencing the best hikes in B.C.

About the Author
Richo was born in 1955 in Iowa City Iowa, the son of a caring mother and an accomplished physician. He was always fascinated by plants and especially seeds, and demonstrated from an early age an unusual talent for collecting and germinating diverse seeds. His professional work as an archaeologist in East Africa blossomed into a nascent ascent into ethnobotany. On his return to the United States in 1975 he and his wife, Mayche, and their fledgling family set up a homestead in a remote area of the coast mountains of Oregon. Here they delved into the art, science, and horticulture of growing diverse gardens of medicinal herbs. Richo has written extensively of these experiences in his book "Making Plant Medicine" and now continues the story in "The Medicinal Herb Grower." His writing style is much like James Herriot (of veterinary fame) but of course he discusses herbs, not horses. The early gardens contained scores of species of plants that were unusual at the time, and later gardens contained hundreds of species. Eventually, Richo and his family produced gardens with over 1,000 species of medicinal herbs from all over the world, with extensive collections from america, china, south america, europe, the middle east, and east africa. Seeds and organically certified medicinal herb plants began to be distributed under the auspices of "Horizon Herbs, LLC" which eventually grew to be a major player in conservation of medicinal herbs, distributing millions of seed packets of viable, organic, hand-collected, open-pollinated, heriloom, and not gmo'd seeds worldwide. Richo's second book "Growing At-Risk Medicinal Herbs--Cultivation, Conservation and Ecology" was well-received by numerous growers, farmers, medicine makers, and also by the conservation community. It provided detailed information on the cultivation of 20 native american medicinal herbs at danger of extinction, including extremely detailed information on propagation biology, cultivation techniques, processing and yields. In recent years, Richo has been travelling worldwide (e.g. Yunnan, Zanzibar) to collect medicinal herb plants, focusing on finding the native land races of common medicinal herbs. His findings are well documented on his website at horizonherbs.com, and he contributes as a guest lecturer at herb gatherings nationwide as well as Bastyr University. His daughter, Nadja, is an associate professor of chemistry at University of Greensboro in North Carolina, where she engages in medicinal plant research. His daughter, Sena, has now illustrated three books. His wife is an accomplished cellist and editor. His son is a well-known builder of large geodesic domes. He has three grandchildren--Jaiden, Naia, and Nova Rose. The Cech family motto is "Sowing Seeds Worldwide for the Benefit of People, Plants and the Planet."

I wish they had more than a 5 star rating!!!

I have had good success with growing medicinals from seed. After reading this book it has completely catapulted me into the upper echelons of seed starting. Before reading the book I was using an all organic commercial seed starting mix which brought on good results. All my plants that I started from seed (Horizon Herbs) are now thriving in my garden. Since I like to experiment and change different variables, I decided to follow Richo's advice on making homemade potting soil. I will say my seedlings look a lot healthier and robust, and feel more lively than with the other mixes. The chapter on "Making Your Own Potting Soil" is worth the price of the book alone. Many of the topics covered in that section cannot be found online. Some topics I found interesting were direct seeding, sonic effects, the tortuga, and rubber fingers. Many of these topics were invented or discovered at Horizon Herbs. This book is filled with basic, soild, and some common sense information. But when reading through it the information resonates at a deeper level, as if mother nature and Richo were both in front of you showing you. The book is great from start to finish, from the first word to the last. His stories to tie in the lessons of the chapters are stories that are deeply abosorbed and extremely helpful when growing medicinals. He has a great sense of humor and a helpful and informative way of explaning the herbal trade. He is truly a steward of the earth. I wish Amazon had more than 5 stars for a truly phenomenal book such as this one. It was highly acclaimed by many herbalists such as Christopher Hobbs. I cannot say enough great things about it. It has changed my perspective on seed starting and many other topics. Amazon is out of the book but it can also be bought directly from Richo at Horizon Herbs. My only question is, when will volume 2 be ready? Thank you Richo for all your hard work.

Unleashing the Garden Guru

"The Medicinal Herb Grower" is like taking a guided pilgrimage through the garden, with an enlightened teacher of botanical beings at your side. It is a most insightful anthology of living and working in nature. As an avid herbalist and plant devotee, I have found this book inspiring and useful in many avenues of my work and life. The book begins with the "Tale of the Golden Dragonfly," which sets the stage for shapeshifting the reader into an adept steward of the garden. Each lesson throughout the book is accompanied by both anecdotal experiences of friends and experiments from the garden at Horizon Herbs. The chapter "Creating Plant Habitat" teaches how to grow Mandrake, a very complex plant to cultivate! Other subjects include creating live soil, composting, and building a greenhouse, shadehouse and tortuga (a raised bed designed after the turtle). It breaks down these processes into simple steps, and lays the information out in a down to earth way. After reading this book, I find myself much more in tune with the seasonal changes and the garden work that comes along with each phase. Warm thanks to Richo and all those involved for sharing the wisdom you have harvested over the years! This book is a sure treasure, an essential part of every gardener's reading collection.

Love this book!

I ordered this book last week directly from Horizon Herbs and it arrived on Saturday (along with a pack of medicinal herbs that I cannot wait to plant). I was immediately drawn to the author's style of writing that includes family stories and other anecdotes. I am new to medicinal herbs (culinary herbs have been in my garden for many years) and I think this is a great book to start with. I also love that I can order plants and seeds directly from the author's family farm, which I plan on doing again very soon. Richo Cech and Horizon Herbs has earned a new fan as well as a very happy customer.

Walks you through an in-depth but easy Geography course!

This is an incredible book. Covers so much and yet captures the student's attention and keeps it because it EXPLAINS instead of just provides information. Lots of hands-on activities make learning more concrete and understandable for students. There is a list on each side of the page of words that have a definition next to them - this can be used as a vocabulary list and the definition is already there (there is a vocabulary list included in each section). Nice color photos throughout. A section of review questions are included in each section. But it is the hands-on activities (and lots of them) that cement this as my new favorite geography book to use with students.

I could teach this course with only a basic understandings of physical geography in my background - so no prior knowledge is needed. Very well laid out lesson plans with excellent examples that students (grades 4 or so and up) can grasp on to and understand. For example, here is a paragraph from page 2:

"There are about four hundred billion stars in the Milky Way. The distances between the stars are so great that scientists had to create a new term for describing them. We think of distance here on earth in terms of minutes, hours or days it takes to get from one place to another. But in space, the distances have to be measured in years or, more specifically, in light years. Scientists measure distance in space by how far light travels in a year. So how fast is light? Light travels at 186,000 miles (299,329 km) per second! If you were driving sixty miles per hour, it would take over 129 days driving twenty-four hours a day to travel 186,000 miles, yet light travles this far in one second. To reach ALpha Centauri, the star closest to our sun, you would have to travel at the speed of light for 4.5 years. At this time, traveling even close to the speed of light is impossible. We cannot even explore all of our own galaxy, let alone travel to the next one which is three million light years away."

The author is not only very knowledgeable about geography, but is a master story-teller too who weaves interesting facts and information in such a way that everyone listening or reading learns without even trying. THAT is the highest achievement an educator/author can be crowned with!

Best geography book ever

This geography book was meant to be the first in a series on geography. It covers only physical geography, as that is the part that hardly changes. Little is mentioned of political or cultural geography except as to how borders are often drawn and how environment effects culture. The questions always have 2-4 review questions on important material from previous lessons. Sometimes called the Saxon math book of geography, the book's style is much like Saxon. Colorful relevant diagrams, charts, photos, and exercises are present in good locations. There are no cartoon turtles or foxes to tell the story as dumbed down texts use. If you follow this method, your students will know this material and retain it.

I wish the publisher had continued the series. I talked with Ms. Runkle, and she mentioned that there was supposed to have been a volume on each continent or set of continents for future years. Apparently, the publisher felt one year was all America could stomach, regardless of what surveys show of our culture's geographic illiteracy.

This book would be suitable for high school geography credit with the addition of report assignments. Without the writing assignments, it is good for middle school upwards, something I never say {student books that cover six years of ability}.

I did supplement with Youtube videos for the students to be able to see in motion volcanic action, river erosion, atmospheric events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.

About the Author
One of seven children, Claire Boudreaux Bateman was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and her Master of Arts from the University of New Orleans. Currently, she lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with her husband, David, and their two children.

Precious little book for all ages. This volume is lovingly illustrated for the enjoyment of all. An adorable gift for parents and grandparents.

Where does that light come from?

It's whimsy. It's light..oh, pardon the pun. "This little light of mine" is a soft, warm, glowing book about pre-born babies in heaven. Where does that light come from? Why, from God, of course.

First, a baby is made from ears down to toes, then checked out by an angel. Next, the baby waits in line to see God. This God is so loving and warm that babies want to just stay with Him. However, God sees them before their sojourn on Earth to explain their purpose. He infuses them with a light from His heart, making each baby part of His Being.

A birthday candle is a reminder of God's light and its symbolism that each person contains this light. Another reviewer questions this light in criminals and such. There is a suggestion of these when God tells the baby: "You will recognize the light in people when they are sweet or forgiving." By inference "bad" people will have no light because they lost it being bad, or probably dimmed it.

This is not the bible or a treatise on religion. It is a sweet book for young children to provide a loving picture of the God who creates us. Just take it for what it is.

The illustrations are glowing and perfect. Paired with the text, this is an excellent gift book for new mothers or grandmothers, and for children.

About the Author
Scot C. Nelson, PhD works in Hawai‘i as a university botanist and plant pathologist, where he is involved in noni research and education. He began his work with noni in 1998 and since then has conducted several noni workshops in the Pacific, authored a number of horticultural and botanical reference articles about noni, and produced the popular Noni Website. Scot has served as a consultant for noni growers and noni producers, wholesalers and retailers throughout the world.

Craig R. Elevitch is an agroforestry specialist based in Hawai‘i. Since 1989, he has worked in agroforestry design, management, and education. His publications focus on multipurpose trees that have economic, environmental, and cultural significance. Craig is editor of Traditional Trees of Pacific Islands: Their Culture, Environment, and Use (2006), The Overstory Book: Cultivating Connections with Trees (2004), and co-author of Growing Koa: A Hawaiian Legacy Tree (2003).

This thin book contains little new information that is not currently available on the internet or through promoters of Noni. In fact web search provides a richer set of information which is more current. This is a popularizing volume and not designed to meet the needs of someone seriously exploring this latest push through the MLM community.

State of the art publication on noni

Noni has been the subject of many fantastic claims. In this book, Nelson and Elevitch have clearly set out what is scientifically documented and what is folklore and have pointed out areas where sciece may yet catch up with traditional knowlege. The book is also beautifully illustrated with hundreds of photos from Hawaii and the Pacific by the authors.
