I bought this book for my husband, who lives by the first Sports Nutrition Guide by Dr. Colgan. His old book has significant signs of wear and tear from overuse, so I thought my husband would be happy to receive Dr. Colgan's more recent publication of Sports Nutrition and I was right! Now he's constantly referring and comparting and incorporating the information he finds in this book into his health regime!

Don't let the title fool you, this is for everyone!

Not just "athletes." Essentially, this is an update to Colgan's popular "Sports Nutrition Guide" from 1993. Along with Dr. andrew Weil, Colgan is one of the only "doctors" who truly understands how degraded our food supply is relative to what is natural and healthy, and even more so than Weil, Colgan really tells it like it is and lays it on thick! i have been a long time follower of Colgan, and credit him for much of my success in bodybuilding, powerlifting, and professionally as a Personal Trainer. Colgan helped me on my way to becomming a trainer with much enhanced knowledge of nutrition that helped many a client achieve amazing results (especially compared to the knucklehead trainers who told their overweight clients to eat a bagle for breakfast, and/or to do more cardio to lose fat!). Colgan does not take any balogna from mainstream western medicine and the mess it has created, instead, he will expose the lies and show you the truth in a way that your intuition (and any research, if you have doubts), will assure you is correct!

A MUST have

It's been said before, this book is not only for the athletes, it can be applied to anyone who wants to gain knowledge about nutrition. Of course he does address the athlete needs over and above non-athletes, so any serious athlete should not miss out on this important information. Every mineral and vitamin is covered in separate chapters with references to scientific quality studies. You will also find useful information about soy, creatine, melatonin and more. It makes for easy reading and the book is usable as a reference book. The writing style is easy to follow, but he does down-talk FDA numerous times, so if you just ignore that and focus on the facts, this book is excellent. It also covers the importance of antioxidants. HOWEVER, it is written in 2002 and stuff has happened since then, therefore you also NEED his "You can prevent cancer" from 2006 or better yet "Brain Power" in order to get the important info about "Mitochondrial Antioxidants". 90% of free radicals made in your body are generated at the mitochondria and ordinary antioxidants CANNOT neutralize them! "Sports Nutrition" does not cover the "Mitochondrial Antioxidants", that's why.

Not bad, but one dimensional

For years I had practiced a series of stretches, picked up from various sources, in preparation for various physical activities that I enjoy: a little running, weight training, wing chun kung fu, and jeet kune do. Some of the stretches I had used were supposedly 'gentle' stretches, some even borrowed from yoga.

Well, I picked this book up after suffering, for the first time in my life at 37 years of age, SEVERE shin-splints. This book was partly instrumental in understanding the cause and alleviating the pain.

I would have to agree with other reviewers, though, that this book should include some upper body stretches, especially for the back. If you suffer back pain, it won't matter how well your lower body is stretched. A sore back will take you out of whatever sport you like to do.

I was surprised to see that some common stretches are just plain harmful and dangerous (for example, 'hurdlers' stretches inflict long-term damage to the knee ligaments of the trailing leg), including some that are part of Bob Anderson's book "Stretching." However, since Anderson's book is at least twenty years old, perhaps it is just in need of an update.

Update: since reading this book, I have spent a period with "The Wharton's Stretch Book" and later Thomas Kurz's "Scientific Stretching". "The Stark Reality of Stretching" focuses on static stretching, so in my opinion, the stretches it recommends are inappropriate before a sports activity. These stretches would be suitable as cool-down stretches or end-of-the-day relaxation stretches. A much better source for pre-sports stretching is "Scientific Stretching" by Thomas Kurz. This book simply doesn't cover the necessary bases for a comprehensive sports stretching program.

safe for beginners; insightful for the experienced

While I do have some complaints about this book, I think it is a worthy addition to the library of any serious athlete, martial artist (my case), or anyone who wants to stay fit. This book will demonstrate a safe way to stretch even for beginners and the terminally tight. There are clear diagrams of the targeted muscle groups. The "right" way to stretch is shown along with common mistakes that should be avoided--there are explanations of *why* these mistakes should be avoided (e.g. a mistake will end up stretching a ligament, not the targeted muscle). Explanations are given along with all the instructions--this is much more helpful than unexplained instructions and pictures, because the reader will understand what is happening, what he/she should or should not feel, etc. There are also explanations of the problems that can be caused if proper stretching is not practiced (e.g. bunions or plantar fascitis pain could be caused by tight calf muscles). I am naturally flexible (can do both the side and straddle splits cold) and already stretch very regularly but I still found the explanations insightful.
Now the complaints... it would have been great if Dr. Stark also included excercises for the upper body. Given his podiatric background, the lower body focus is understandable but makes his book incomplete. If you want only one stretching book, this is not generalized enough (Bob Anderson's book is much broader but less insightful, in my opinion). Stark is also over-conservative, claiming that certain stretches ("skill-level stretches", like the splits) should only be practiced from a young age. I think that many people will find such opinions disheartening--I myself only attempted (and achieved) the splits after I was in my twenties, as have many others. All in all, though, it's better to err on the side of safety and I can't imagine anyone getting injured by his stretches. Get this book for safe lower-body stretching, but buy something else, like "Scientific Stretching", if you want to really push yourself.

Are you making the stretching mistakes explained by Stark?

I have studied the martial arts for several years and ran cross country and indoor/outdoor track in high school. While I am not yet 30, I believe my lingering lower leg pain is due to poor "stretches" and exercises from earlier years in these activities. After reading Dr Stark's book, I will make changes in my exercise routine to hopefully prevent further damage.
I was shocked to see how many harmful "stretches" Dr Stark describes were taught by my coaches. Many trainers have no idea their desire to improve the conditioning of their athletes can cause long-term physical damage. (Guess what, coach? It's physically impossible to stretch the Achilles Tendon! Also, I can't stretch my hamstrings by standing, then bending over!)
Dr Stark clues the reader in to fundamental, powerful ideas, such as "loaded muscles can't stretch." Only relaxed muscles can stretch. Bouncing only causes muscles to cease relaxing.
I agree with an earlier reviewer that Dr Stark should address upper body stretching. While many of Dr Stark's patients' complaints are caused by lower extremity problems, athletes need sound upper body guidance too.
Be forewarned on the content of this book. While it rates 224 pages, some of the material is repetitive, the font is huge, and sometimes only a few paragraphs appear on a single page. Still, the amount of whitespace doesn't detract from the depth of material. The diagrams are clear and the recommended stretches are easy to follow.
Anyone who seeks to learn how to properly prepare for athletics, and wishes to remain fit for life, will enjoy Dr Stark's book.

This book will really touch your heart. Dr.Orzeck was our Veterinarian for both the dog and cat we had. His stories will bring tears to your eyes but it's touching seeing it through his eyes. From his personal losses to what happened in his clinic. It truly can sometimes break your heart.

A must read for anyone who shares his or her life with a pet, or has loved and lost a pet.
From his dedication page to his closing sentence, Dr. Orzeck will captivate the reader with his endless empathy and anguish of dealing with the death of animals. Written with candor, this gentle and compassionate country vet tells of unforgettable animals. These are animals he must enthanize due to old age, trauma, illness, and owner neglect and selfishness. Each animal's story will leave you deeply touched; you feel the doctor's own heartbreak and pain at the loss of each innocent life.

Wonderful book for all animal lovers!

Dr. Orzeck addresses some difficult issues in euthansia with a sense of wonderment and love towards animals. The book brings both tears and joy as "Doc" describes many of the creatures that he has enjoyed in life and grieved in death. As a veterinarian, he has illuminated one of the hardest chores an animal doctor has to perform with both compassion and sensitivity. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves animals, anyone who aspires to be a veterinarian or anyone who has recently lost a pet.

Excellent guide for the cruise traveler bound for the Med.

There are so many guides available for Europe, but most of them do not address the cruise traveler. Anne Vipond has, finally, written a guide that is relavant to the Mediterranean cruise experience. Forget the voluminous descriptions of hotels and restaurants, for Anne concentrates on the ports of call and the activities available. Want to know where the ship docks in Naples (or any other port)? You'll find an excellent map of the port area along with attractions within walking distance of the port. The historical background sections are useful, and the book is organized in a very understandable manner. Aside from a good cruise agent, this book is a Med-bound cruise traveler's best friend! It is an excellent sequel to Anne's previous title, Alaska by Cruise Ship.

Wow - What beautiful photographs that capture the essense of each destination. Excellent information on ports of call throughout the Mediterranean - including, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and others. This book has a nice history section followed by a nice discussion of Art and Architecture. There are short descritions (and beautiful photographs) of various points of interest along the way -- as well as helpful maps of some of the ports of call. If you're looking for a cruise guide that concentrates on the Mediterranean desinations, this book is for you. If you're looking for a book about various cruise ships, this book is not what you're looking for.

Old world knowledge of log framing artistry

From the back cover; "Architect, teacher, scholar and writer Hermann Phleps was born on June 1, 1877 in Birthalm, Transylvania (now Biertan, Romania). He studied at the Technische Hochschulen in Vienna and Karlsruhe before completing his doctoral work in Dresden. For some thirty-eight years, he lectured at the Technische Hochschulen (Polytechnic) in Danzig. Renowned as one of the "Old Masters" in the field of timber building and wooden architecture, he was the author of a dozen major works and more than one hundred and fifty essays and articles on a broad array of subjects in the fields of building, architecture and design. He died in Marburg, West Germany in 1964 at the age of eighty-six."
This 328 page big book contains dozens of photos of old world artistically built log structures of all kinds, some simple, some elaborate, as well as hundreds of quality drawings of log construction from notch and window details to the entire building. Text describes everything about woods, different types of roofing materials, how to make shingles..the list is endless. This is not a step by step, hold your hand guide for the beginner but a wealth of inspiring ideas for the log and timber framer who sees it and knows he can make it. A valuable reference for the master craftsman.

Heavily illustrated with line drawings and photographs, this book by German architect Hermann Phleps, has gained recognition as a definitive work on the ancient European tradition of horizontal log construction. The book is long out of print and nearly impossible to obtain in the original.

This book is about old European "Works of Heart"

Hermann Phleps was a very gifted historian and architect who was able to record in photos and wonderfully detailed pen and ink drawings, the treasure of solid wood construction. The book was originally published in Germany in 1944 and later translated into English so that we could share in the detailed history of log and solid wood construction techniques used from northern Scandinavia to the Alps, from France to Central Europe. As a log home designer and builder, I find it an endless source of ideas and visual evidence that solid wood construction is both a viable body of construction techniques and a display of handcraftsmanship and "Works of Heart." It is said that a laborer works with his or her hands; a craftsman, their hands and their head and an artist, their hands, their head and their heart. This book shows how long that has been true and sets a target for us to strive for once again.

Thomas L. Madden graduated for Indiana State University with a B.S. in Marketing. He receieved a Masters in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. An excellent start for Accelerated Learning

This book is written in a very easy to understand and easy to apply format. Is an excellent option for students, teachers and parents (specially those concerned about how to get the best from the natural ways to learn). Although this is an elementary book, is the best I know about how to introduce the reader in the ABC of Accelerated Learning: multiple intelligences, learning styles, the 3 brains theory, music for learning, memory functioning, short term memory and large term memory, etc. Besides, this book is a web based learning program (the web site is a good companion for the book).
This is a very powerful and easy to implement accelerated learning program. Tom had made a great job here. I really recommend this book for those interested in getting the best about their natural ways of learning.

About the Author
Janet M. Magiera has been studying the Peshitta for over 25 years and has developed an entire database of the New Testament, which will generate an interlinear, concordance, parallel translations, and lexicon, as well as the Light of the Word Ministry translation. Her database is currently being published with BibleWorks software, soon to be released. Magiera is an ordained minister and has been teaching Bible studies and classes throughout the country.

Companion volume to Magiera's three-volume Interlinear set

Aramaic words are numbered in a scheme similar to Strong's numbers for Hebrew and Greek and number coordinated with Magiera's three-volume Interlinear set. Thus, those volumes along with her companion concordance are my first "go to" books for NT study. This means they are my starting point for study but I access other sources to get a broad view of the instant subject. My opinion is, first go the Aramaic sources for the original NT then, if appropriate, consult Greek sources which can sometimes help clarify an Aramaic word (for example, see following re: Rev 6:8). I have most of the English translations from the Aramaic, including two other Interlinears (which are not number-keyed as is this dictionary) as well as Lamsa which I've had since 1974. Despite critics of Lamsa, I do find a few of his word "translations" to be more correct than any of the later Aramaic translations. Most notable of these is at Rev. 6:8 where Lamsa has "green" horse but all other Aramaics in my possession have "pale" horse (number 1086, green, vegetable; compare Strong's H3387 herb, green thing; compare Strong's G5515, khol-ros, greenish, green, pale. Note that khol-ros is the same root as cholera, choleric, as in a sickly-green color). Expensive, yes. Invaluable, for sure.

Just What I've Been Looking For

To all who are interested in learning Aramaic, this is the Lexicon for you. I use the Hebrew as well as the Aramaic Peshitta language quite a bit in my Biblical studies and I must say that this book has been a blessing to me. Although it is quite expensive, I feel that it is worth it. It feels good to know that I am studying the language that our Messiah spoke and that alone makes it worth the price.

Closer to the King James translation.

Janet Magiera's translation seems to be very close to the King James translation which I found in other books was not the same. I already know that the King James version leaves something to be desired in that it used only one manuscript and that one was not one of the better ones. However, I still value her books.
