Herself Defined: HD and Her World, by Barbara Guest

The definitive biography of Hilda Doolittle (aka H.D.), the Imagist poet whose work redefined the course of womens writing throughout the twentieth century. A woman of great beauty, H.D. enthralled the literary worlds of London and Paris and counted among her intimates such figures as Ezra Pound--to whom she was briefly engaged--William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore and D.H. Lawrence. Herself Defined not only helps to define this enigmatic force in modern literature and poetry, but also provides a fascinating glimpse into the heart and mind of an artist in her creative yet tormented search for self.

A vastly tangled web of relationships -- with some beautiful poetry along the way
By D. Kovacs
I have found myself repeatedly going back to this biography of the elusive
poet H.D. over the years, just as fascinated by the incredibly complex web
of relationships she developed as I am by the tantalizing beauty of her poetry.
Some of her most important relationships (with Ezra Pound, Richard Aldington,
D.H. Lawrence, Bryher, Freud) can lead one into multiple streams of "modernism"
in every sense of the word.

I knocked off one star for a bit too much speculation regarding some of her
relationships...and for the lack of depth when covering H.D.'s upbringing of
her daughter Perdita Schaffner (although this lack of depth was quite probably
at her daughter's urging). There is no record anywhere that the amazing Perdita --
who grew up to marry, raise four children, and carry on a busy life in New York
literary circles -- ever spoke with resentment of her chilly, unconventional, and
unstable upbringing by H.D. After reading the book multiple times, what really
hits is that her "self" and her poetry were H.D.'s true loves. Everyone else,
including her daughter, she loved more at a distance. Recommended.

Lots of detail, very little insight
By J. Blee
A very unfortunate book in that Barbara Guest became upset over the effort it took to produce the book and began to dislike H.D. as a result. Every uncharitable story about H.D. is put forth without balance. Also I know from someone who knew H.D. and gave Guest material favorable to H.D. that Guest did not print it. Guest might well have envied H.D.'s poetry as well, not a happy situation for a biographer! Lots of detail, very little insight. Guest does not really take up H.D.'s work. Isn't that what a book about a poet should include?
