An Academic Review
By Shean Phillips
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE TEXT
Allred, Leonard. Light Their Fire: guidelines for effectively teaching adults. Winston Salem, NC: Piedmont Baptist College Press, 2007. 169 pgs.
INFORMATION ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr. Leonard Allred, having graduated from Columbia Bible College in Columbia South Carolina attended Faith Theological Seminary in Philadelphia for one year and earned both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Christian Education from Bob Jones University.
Dr. Allred was a local church pastor for approximately 7 years and has taught in Bible colleges for over 40 years. His teaching ministry included three years at Graham Bible College in Bristol, Tennessee, eight years at Northeastern Bible College in Essex Fells, New Jersey, and over thirty years at Piedmont Baptist College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is the latter educational institution that published Light Their Fire. Also during this time, Allred was privileged to serve as the Christian education Director in two different churches. His ministry spanned the "Sunday school boom."
SUMMARY OF THE TEXT
Weary warriors in teaching roles will collect great nuggets of encouragement as they work through the twenty-nine "matches" in this user friendly, easy-read, tool for lay educators. Blending decades of experience and illustrations with Ph.D. knowledge and research, Allred delivers an application-rich array of advices on educating adults.
As Dr. Charles Petitt president of Piedmont Baptist College said of this text, "If you are looking for a book that is big on theory and small on application, this is not the one," (back

cover). With sections such as "Pray! Pray! Pray!" and "Watch your body language" this text would be very useful to virtually any leader in a speaking capacity. Beginning with a series of sections on personal spiritual discipline, Light Their Fire puts great emphasis in the foundation of person spiritual preparedness in the life of the teacher. There is no lack of great practical advise, in the section entitled "Terminating negative mannerisms" for instance, Dr. Allred lists a number of mannerisms in chapter 24 and gives the reader a few practical ways to spot his or her own undesirable mannerisms. How many times has the gospel been distracted by the deliverer's mannerisms whether they be active or verbal? Allred's proposed solution is not mind-boggling, nor is it a new-fangled, he says "If you have never done this before, ask someone to use a camcorder to tape one of your lessons. Later get alone and view the playback. If any of the mannerisms show up...make a conscious effort to eliminate them from your teaching in the future." (133)
In other chapters Allred tackles the topics of knowing students' names, monotone delivery, preparation for lessons including lesson plans, use of positive reinforcement, etc. There is no lack of direction for choosing a topic to teach on, teaching methods to use, or even teaching application suggestions.
ANALYSIS OF THE TEXT
Having spoken with Dr. Allred and heard his heart's cry, there is no question that his desire and purpose for the text is to provide a quality work that will communicate strategies for effective and affective teaching to new and veteran teachers alike. While most of the "matches"

given in Light Their Fire are universal as to the age groups with which they work, the application is most definitely toward the teacher of adults. Had Allred set out with this book to provide
another "academic-made-for-the-classroom" type of Christian education textbook, It would be this writer's humble opinion that this work was far too shallow and lean. It is made clear early in the work, even in the introduction that Allred's purpose was much more set on equipping lay leaders than adding to a bible college or seminary library. "My purpose has never been to produce an exhaustive ...scholarly treatise on the subject of androgogy, the art and/or science of teaching adults. It has been rather to put together a handbook with suggestions that would help sharpen the skills of those who sense God's call to teach adults." (9)
Understanding the purpose of the text, and author's intended audience, it is clever that he chose to make brief chapters (more likely to be read by a busy lay teacher), and to clearly mark them in the table of contents (gives reader freedom to choose what to read and gives ease to using the text as a reference tool.) This text does not have to be read in order, although there are a few instances that remind the reader about a previous chapter.
As for the objectivity of the author, Allred covers the bases well. For instance, when discussing the above mentioned chapter on mannerisms, room is given for legitimate reasons for those mannerism (with a little humor sprinkled in). "Apparently the evangelist was convinced that his pants were falling off, for all during his message, he would repeatedly reach down and pull them up higher on his hips. Maybe he was a successful dieter." (131) With this bit of humor, the author gives room for those who may have a genuine reason for their mannerism. This type of objectivity is cast throughout the work.

Light Their Fire is a very thorough guide to teaching effectively. It gives sound advice in a number of areas under the umbrella of pedagogy or more specifically androgogy. Many of those subjects have already been mentioned earlier. It should be noted here, that much of the same material cover in Allred's book is available in other more scholarly-focused works. Allred does
what none of them do by putting those same truths learned in a methods and techniques of teaching class on the college level into the hands of a leader that is working forty hours a week and teaching an adult small group, and making it an enjoyable read.
EVALUATION OF THE TEXT
With the steady boom of cell/small groups ministries in this era of the church, and the necessity of developing leaders for these ministries, Light Their Fire goes a long way toward not just equipping teachers, but toward helping pastors equip their lay leaders to reproduce other leaders. The twenty-nine short segments within this book would work very well as a training retreat outline. The trainers could easily tackle 10 of these topics in a three-hour session and have three sessions in the retreat. There could also be a challenge made to read one a day for a month and then have a summary/discussion time centered on the practical teachings at a picnic or other casual (non-threatening) atmosphere.
The only short-coming I could find in the work is the lack of direct use of Scripture. After the first couple of chapters, the number of direct quotations from the Word of God drops dramatically. Knowing the intent of the book and the heart of the author (he is a true Biblicist and a student of God's Word who holds it in the highest esteem), I can only think that the work was written with the express goal of getting to the fundamentals of teaching and not bogging it
5
down with a heavy academic or spiritual overtone. In this respect, Allred is true to his purpose for writing the book; early on he addresses the spiritual needs of the teacher and the learners and moves on to the practical side of the role of the teacher.
Having come through a first year of teaching in a formal education setting, I find Dr. Allred's writings on the subject of lay teaching to be profound in their application and broad in their reach of the need for solid personal preparation, lesson preparation and a quality, distraction free delivery of the Word of God. Also of great worth are the shepherding tools available in the appendix. Particularly the "Sample Prayer List" which outlines some "how to's" and some "what for's" as a teacher prayers for his students, including keeping a prayer list and a prayer schedule. The depth of the significance of this section comes from having witnessed a portion of Dr. Allred's powerful teaching career and having been one of the students for whom he cared and prayed. In the event that God allows me the opportunity to share this book with a lay leader or someone who is in charge of equipping them, I will highly recommend Dr. Leonard Allred's 29 matches to help Light Their Fire.

Practicality and to the point!
By K. Long
This book is well written and full of practical advice. This book is easy reading, yet full of wisdom and it should be cherished for its rich insight into teaching adult Sunday School. The teaching methods discussed could also transfer into other areas of teaching as well. If you desire to effectively communicate a lesson in a classroom setting then you need to read this book.
