Beth Harrison Schneider has enjoyed a diverse career in art. She attended Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and worked as a commercial artist for Display Corporation in Milwaukee. After moving to Fort Lauderdale with her husband (fellow artist Claude Schneider) and three children, Beth taught art in the Broward County school system. Her preferred medium is colored pencil. She lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains where she enjoys cooking, making quilts and illustrating children's books.

Extreme Gardening--you bet!

I'm an organic vegetable gardener who lives in the desert Southwest. I get the extreme hot summers but cooler winters than Tucson or Phoenix. I like this book mostly for plant culture. All the plant culture information most gardeners ever need is on-line, but desert gardening is bit counter-intuitive. It's helpful to have desert specific information. Most folks aren't planting their melons in March, but I am.

For example: Owens'tomato growing information is right on. I know because I do it his way. I raise my tomatoes in the shade. That wouldn't work well way back East where I was raised. Last summer I had a great harvest despite a late visit from grasshoppers. I brought in 45 tomatoes to ripen indoors the day before our first frost of Oct 27. We enjoyed the last tomato of year December 6th---not bad.
I'm talking real tomatoes you can slice and put on your sandwich, not just cherry tomatoes.

I own two other desert gardening books: Mary Irish's Month-by-Month gardening in the Desert Southwest. This one is good for figuring out when to plant everything. And,Desert Gardening Fruits and Vegetables, The Complete Guide by George Brookbank. This book isn't organized as well as the other two books, but it was the first desert specific gardening book I bought. I've read it cover to cover several times and despite the poor black and white photos, it's my favorite of the three. I consider my desert gardening library complete with these three books.

Good tips...not only for Desert Gardeners

I live in Phoenix and have the opportunity of catching Dave Owens tips for gardening on Channel 3 on a weekly basis. Dave has so many tips for gardening that the only way to harness his knowledge is to purchase this book. I have come to find that these tips work not only for those of us living in the desert, but I pass them along to my Mother in Wyoming, and she has as much success as I do with them. Dave is an extremely knowledgable gardner and his book reflects that, the layout was very thought out and takes you step by step from the "what do I need", to "now I've got what I need, what do I do" stages. Bravo, Dave!

One of the best gardening books I have ever read!

David Owens has written a real winner with this book! He tells us which plants will survive in our harsh desert environment and how to plant and take care of them. The book is easy to follow and I'm having good luck with all the trees and vegetables I have planted using his guidelines.
If you thought that gardening was not an option since you moved to the desert you need this book to show you the way!

Exceptional Yellowstone guide

Yellowstone Treasures, by Janet Chapple, is the key to appreciating this beautiful park. Because the book is organized into Road Logs, wherever you are you read about what's coming up next: geological phenomena, animals, trees, flowers, trail heads, lakes and human history are all included. The maps are clear, plentiful, accurate and useful. Each section is amply expanded with information boxes about things such as how geysers work, how terraces are built, how the names of places were chosen, petrified trees, geological mysteries, etc. The chapters on geological phenomena, human history, flora and fauna are a gold mine of information. Take the book with you, but look at the website [...] well beforehand, because it is also a treasure. We were never without this book during our visit.

extremely comprehensive guide through the park

This book will take you through the park and list each (hundreds of) potentially interesting items with a clear description of where they are found. I would recommend reading this book prior to visiting Yellowstone and highlighting those items that you would like to see. Then having your passenger follow along with the book as you drive, alerting you when you approach one of the items that you have highlighted.

Great guide for Yelowstone and Surrounding Area

I highly recommend this book. This author provides great history along with useful information in enjoying the park. There is a logical division of areas within the park and she references you to the next map(location) at the end of each discussion. It is an easy to use reference. She gives information about the surrounding towns and immediate areas outside of each park entrance which decreases the need for additional guide books. I highly recommend this book.

Specially designed devices and modifications in their home can help your loved ones maintain their independence, with a minimum of risk.

We often wrestle with the staying at home option versus encouraging our loved ones to move to an assisted living facility as an all-or-nothing decision. Because we worry for their safety, and often feel responsible if an accident should occur, we encourage them to move where their needs will be taken care of in a safe environment. About the Author
Phyllis Cunningham was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, where she received her early training largely in classical music. She began playing the piano for church services while still in elementary school. The techniques shown in the book were self developed, and she has taught them to her own students. She has been the pianist in several churches for over forty years, accompanying choirs, solists, and small groups as well as intrumentalists.

Nice arrangements, but little help... a revised review (9/8/08)

While I can appreciate the author's good intentions, this book really didn't help me much. I found it way too fast-paced and difficult for the average player. I took nine years of lessons and currently play for congregational singing at my church. I was hoping this book could help me add nice touches to the standard hymn arrangements. Instead, however, it simply presents a few concepts, gives many examples, but doesn't actually teach the reader how to use these concepts in playing. The section on modulation is okay, but my piano teacher taught me a better way of memorizing modulation formulas than this book presented. If you are an advanced player who really knows his/her chords, then "Right from the Hymnbook" might make more sense to you.

After looking over this book nearly four years later, I realize my initial criticism was a little premature. I would bump up my rating to at least a 3. As one reviewer said, the arrangements alone really are worth the price of the book. However, I still believe that without the guide of an instructor, the concepts it sets out to teach won't help a student who doesn't have a firm grasp on chord structures. As the book states "[i]t is assumed that the student has a working knowledge of note reading and is fairly well acquainted with the way hymns are written." For future editions, I would recommend the added clause "and is able to recognize and play chords on sight, without the aid of chord symbols."

Quite good for the novice Church Pianist

If you are a novice church pianist, and have the basics of music theory down, it is very good at showing you how to take making a proper accompianment for congregational singing using a regular pew hymnal. It is written for someone with at least intermediate piano skills, and a working knowledge of keys, scales, and chords. I like it, and though I have been a church pianist over 30 years, I did learn a thing or two.

Learn to play great sounding hymns on the piano

The music in hymnbooks is written for four part singing; not for the piano. This book teaches how to adapt the music in hymnbooks to the piano using different methods. Whether you play for yourself or for congregational singing, you will learn to play hymns that sound much better than the arrangements found in typical hymnbooks.

Purchased this as an aid to praying the Rosary. I am a very visual person, and I find Mr. O'Brien's icons quite beautiful. They convey truths with simplicity and grace. The meditations are strong and effective in their aim. I see great consistency of tone with the many works of fiction he has produced. According to his website, there is an updated version of this book forthcoming. Pleased with this purchase for its quality and value, and happy that it is available through Amazon sellers - typical brick and mortar Catholic booksellers do not have it available.

Heard the taped version of LIVING AN EXTRAORDINARY
LIFE by Robert White and Dennis Becker . . . its promise was a big one;
i.e., to present "8 Power Principles to Create a Life of Meaning and
Abundance."
But the authors deliver--and then some . . . they give many
excellent suggestions that are applicable in almost any situation.
I also like their contention that success can be yours if you
can learn more about and begin to apply the skills of awareness,
responsibility and communication . . . moreover, they add that
"even a small improvement in understanding and application
will make a huge difference in your experience of living."
Among the many fine ideas that I got from listening were these:
Before your head hits the pillow tonight, ask yourself: What do I wish
I had said or done? Then say or do it now!
Imagine if you were participating 100%. Do so.
There's a world of difference between watching things happen and
making things happen.
Creating an extraordinary life requires 100% commitment.
You can accomplish very little yourself. You need the help and
support of others.
Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.
The idea that you can cause somebody else to suffer with your
anger is an illusion.
A "have to" attitude sets you up for negative feelings. Instead,
say "I choose to." (For example, when thinking about going to work
in the morning.)
If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what
you've got.
Get used to saying: I acknowledge your point of view. Here's my
point of view.

I have benefited from Robert's experience, insight and wisdom for a number of years. One of Robert's great gifts is helping others live an extraordinary life. He has captured his gift in the pages of this book to the benefit of all of us that read it. I personally found it to be of such great value that I have sent many copies to my clients. A book really has to be of the highest value for me to personally endorse it, send it to my clients and put my credibilty on the line. Living an Extraordinary Life always hits the mark.
