The Fires of Greenwood: The Tulsa Riot of 1921, a Novel, by Frederick Williams

In the early morning hours of June 1, 1921, hordes of angry whites in Tulsa, Oklahoma, crossed the Frisco railroad tracks into the Greenwood section known as Black Wall Street, armed with weapons and a determination to destroy. Within a seven hour period, they managed to slaughter over three hundred African Americans, while literally burning down all the businesses and homes within a 33 block radius. This well-written, fictionalized version chronicles the events that led to one of the most horrendous slaughters of American citizens in this country's troubled racial past.

A great read about a tragic event
By Dr. Loren
Author Frederick Williams has done an outstanding job with a subject matter that can make you quite angry. But instead, through his creative writing, he makes the reader quite proud of those men who stood up to an oppressive mob determined to lynch a young man who had done nothing wrong. The African American Veterans of World War I living in the Greenwood section of Tulsa, Oklahoma, had told the Ku Klux Klan and the supporters of the Klan that they would not stand by while another African American suffered the horrendous death by lynching. These men were heroes that all people who respect the honor and dignity of human life will admire. It was a pleasure to finally read an exceptionally written story about the African American culture. Frederick has written this in such a way that you feel you are right there in 1921 living the lives of those wonderful people. This is a must read for those who believe in justice and dignity for every American. Thanks Frederick for such a great interpretation, through fiction, of a very sad event in our history.

Williams shines!
By Anthony Lindsay
There was a time in Tulsa, Ok., when Blacks owned hotels, newspapers, stables, beauty parlors, restaurants, barbershops and businesses that made for a self-supporting community: a time when Black children were taught that they had a history to be proud, a time when Black veterans demanded respect for their sacrifice, a time when both Dubois and Washington were respected, a time when being Black crossed class lines and united street hustlers with business men, such a time is what Fredrick Williams writes about in the historical novel ‘Fires of Greenwood.’ Greenwood was the Black section of Tulsa that was nationally known as the Black Wall Street. Williams captures the era: the pride of the people, the jealousy and greed, the hope and the love, the determination and spirit of those who believed in themselves to do better, despite the racially depriving times. The read is painful at times, but the message and remembrance of a self-supporting community is worth the discomfort.

Hell of a read
By DL Grant
I heartily recommend this book. It is an homage to a disenfranchised generation. Through this book, their voices live on. Their story is told. We won't forget.

Prosperity Publications began with a promise to tell our stories our way. They have succeeded in a huge way with the introduction of The Fires of Greenwood which recounts the historic 1921 riot that resulted in the destruction of one of the most successful African-American communities the nation has ever known. In relating this story, author Frederick Williams offers dialogue that is compelling and honest and a prose style that is positively gripping. You are there as each moment passes, building toward a stunning conclusion. Every American should know this story.

If this is the stuff that Prosperity Publications books can deliver, a hungry audience eagerly awaits the exciting stories it has yet to share.
