From the Author
I designed these patterns to make as gifts for family and friends. I wanted crocheted gifts that were easy and take approximately one hour to make. The book is small enough to carry around anywhere and the results are beautiful. With this book, you can take an old ornament and make a cover with all the sparkle of Christmas. Beginners to advanced will find this book hard to put down. Its instructions are clear with large print and color photos. If you love Christmas and crocheting this book is a must have, but don't leave it until Christmas to grab this little treasure, these patterns can be enjoyed all year long!

The thread I used for my ornaments is Twilley’s Goldfingering. Other threads can be also be used, but none give you the sparkle of Twilley’s.

About the Author
Susan crocheted Christmas covers for friends and family for 25 years, she always used the same 3 patterns she found in a magazine many years ago. In 1996 she decided to start early on her Christmas ornaments. She had tired of doing the same 3 patterns so she looked for more. Not finding any patterns anywhere, she decided to create her own and ended up with 18 new designs.

Susan sells her ornaments for the crochet challenged and two books with 9 patterns each for those who wish to make the ornaments themselves. She loves making the ornaments because each can be completed in an hour which gives her a sense of accomplishment.

Susan always has new designs in the works and book 3 is due out soon.

I haven't tried it yet, but plan on using it for my ornaments next year. I have made ornaments for the family for 20 years and it gets harder every year to find nifty ideas. If the instructions are written correctly. I have found them in this book.

Like her first book, this one features festive photos of the finished ornaments and very easy to follow instructions to reproduce the ornaments for yourself. Her innovative method for covering the ornaments makes it easy to create lots of new Christmas decorations in no time.

Inspiring and Encouraging for All Ages

5000 copies of "They Never Gave Up" have been given to seriously ill patients at Children's of Alabama. The book has received high praise from both parents and children. It is one of the best things that have ever happened for our organization. By reading the book, children are encouraged to press onward and to pursue their dream and passion regardless of their tough situation and diagnosis. Children are often told, "Be all you can be," or "You can do it." But, as a director, I can tell you the importance of never giving up. I have a copy of this book on my round table as a cue for all who come into my office. The book is a quick read and encourages the reader to be passionately driven toward conquering and overcoming difficult challenges. Every child and teen should have a copy.

a well written review of 6 great men. we have all had times when we wanted to give up. holt wilson gives us examples of why we should always follow our dreams. our children and grandchildren need these kind of examples to help them push on. great choice of characters and well written.

Great for experienced Baja surfers, necessary for novices.

If you are a serious Baja surfer of the past two or three decades, you've probably relied on a hodgepodge of information, including: The Surf Report (now Surfer Magazine Travel Guides), Surfline, nautical charts, AAA maps, Google Earth, and assorted actual exploration, legends, lies and myths to score waves in Baja. This book is the best amalgamation of that data we've seen yet.

While we've only made one quick Baja trip since buying the guide, it was pored over from the backseat of our vehicle for hours at a time by Baja veterans of 100+ excursions, and found to have a lot of great and correct information, with few serious errors. Truthfully, this is about as good as you can get for this wonderful, low population, high surf part of the planet.

So, if you are a veteran, looking for the best in collated Baja gouge, this is it.

Need an example? Here's an easy, interesting one. The campground at K58, with the big sign that has read Alisitos for at least 17 years is also known as La Fonda. Maybe you knew that, or maybe you've been wondering where the hell this mythical beach break called La Fonda is -- is it like Blacks at Torrey Pines? La Fonda is, indeed, the southern end of Alisitos.

You may be wondering if the guide is similarly good for inexperienced Baja surfers. Best $20 you'll spend! Your alternative is 20 years in a labor of love putting together mismatched data points.

And, if you're a Baja road tripper? Not a surfer, but a camper, fisherman, etc? Probably not for you -- it is a true "Surfer's Guide". Many thanks to Mike Parise, the author, for staying the course and focusing on our limited, but highly detail-oriented audience.

What could be better? Other than more break-specific details (e.g. "Slopey, fun right point with occasional steep barrelly lefts, usually working best on a tide push and solid SW swell of over 4 feet, rarely on a NW unless over 10. If swell is too small, beachbreak just north of point always has something. Usual paddle out is from the keyhole in the reef just south of the big bird-s*** covered rock"), not much.

Thankfully, Mike has left a lot of this up to us, and one surfer to another, that may be the only thing keeping a bunch of jetski-towing, meth-head, knuckleheads from showing up at your favorite spot mid-swell.

S.J. Wise had a degree in surgical technology and attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She acquired her nursing training while on active duty in the U.S. Army during Desert Storm. I'm not hungry!

I am the type of person that always likes to be snacking on something. I have tried numerous diets and tricks. They all work for a while, but I always go back to the old way. So I started working out in the gym. I was still having trouble taking off the pounds. One day a friend gave me this book to read. I couldn't believe how much sense it made. So the next day I started watching my sugar grams. I am shocked to find how my sugar you eat without even thinking about it. So now I limit my sugar grams and I truly am not snacking anymore. Before I was constantly thinking about what I could eat next, but now I am not hungry like I was. And if you are not hungry, guess what--you don't eat! I am excited about this book and recommend it to all. Thanks S. J. Wise!

Though we are unfortunately all too familiar with the topic of terrorism, this book gives the topic a new and interesting twist. History has shown that often the greatest threats come in forms we least expect. This book gives an uncommon and original face to international terrorism and packages it in a captivating and intriguing story. Even though there are one or two slow patches, the book flows well and I found I was not willing to put it down. Each chapter is well bridged to the next making it a "quick read". This is the best book on international terrorism I have read in some time.

The book flows well and is an easy weekend read that provides a unique and exciting tale of a believable terrorist plot. The locations within the book go from exotic to romantic and the characters are well developed and add to the book's substance. This book is an enjoyable read and a must read for international espionage fans.

Susan crocheted Christmas covers for friends and family for 35 years, she always used the same 3 patterns she found in a magazine many years ago. In 1996 she decided to start early on her Christmas ornaments. She had tired of doing the same 3 patterns so she looked for more. Not finding any patterns anywhere, she decided to create her own and ended up with 18 new designs. Susan sells her ornaments for the crochet challenged and two books with 9 patterns each for those who wish to make the ornaments themselves. She loves making the ornaments because each can be completed in an hour which gives her a sense of accomplishment.

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas..."

From the minute I received Susan Allen's 1st book of crochet patterns to cover ordinary Christmas balls with a crocheted cover in metallic thread, I couldn't wait to get started. Not only was I fascinated with "the look" of the metallic crocheted thread, but her clever way to cover the Christmas balls made the task go lightning quick. The patterns are easy to follow and the color photos are so glittery and festive.
I had tried other ornament cover patterns before, but they were cumbersome once you had to insert the ornament. But those days are over since these patterns use a very innovative way to cover ornaments. There are a variety of patterns to follow in this book, so you can have fun creating different color combinations. I gave some of my crocheted ornaments to a friend wrapped up in a Christmas basket this year and she said she didn't have the heart to put them away after the holidays because of their beauty!
If you love to crochet as I do, you will find this book to be a valuable addition to your collection of patterns.

I purchased both of Susan Allen's Crocheted Christmas Cover books and was truly pleased with them. I enjoy many types of crafts, but especially crochet, so when I started working on her patterns, and saw how quickly they made up it was a real treat! I especially enjoy the gasps of pleasure and awe that I receive from family and friends when I show off my finished ornaments. They're such a treasure and a great way to make a few extra dollars during the holidays. They can also be an easy but special gift for your 'long list' of friends and co-workers. I can't wait to start my batch for Christmas 2001. Thanks Susan!

I have bought both of susans books. They are wonderful !!! The instructions are very easy to follow. They make up beautifully. I also bought her yarn. This makes them sparkle so bright. Why so few? This is the question which the author put on the first page of the book. More than 300 scientists have won the Nobel Prize since its establishment,however, only 10 of them are women. Why? Why have so few women won the Nobel Prize in science? Some people might say this small number could be evidence for old prejudices. But the author tried to find a different answer through this book. This book contains stories of 15 women scientists who won the Nobel Prize or had a critical role in Nobel Prize winning works. Although this book takes the style of a biography and also describes all the scientific details quite well, it is neither just a biography nor just a science book for general readers. It is more than both of them. These women scientists had gone through lots of difficulties. All of them had experiences of being rejected from the opportunity of receiving a higher education. Most of them had more than once been mistreated and disregarded of their abilities as well as their works. And some of them, such as Rosalind Franklin, still have not received the full credit which she deserves. One might say that all the scientists who did remarkable works had faced and overcome many kinds of difficulties. But these women had to carry the added burden of being "women scientists". So, as the author pointed, another question should arise when the book is finished. Why so many? Why have so many women challenged themselves with such difficult works in spite of all the obstacles? The answer is simple. They loved science. And, through this book, the readers will find a love and a understanding for these fearless women as well as their lover,science.

case studies in discrimination

McGrayne chronicles the discrimination faced by female scientists in the 20th century. Even by those who would eventually achieve the highest prize of the Nobel. She also includes biographies of a few women who never won the Nobel, but were acknowledged later by many to have merited it. Lise Meitner, of course. She was doubly disadvantaged. Being female and Jewish in Germany during the 1920s and 30s. The story of how Otto Hahn won the Physics Nobel shortly after World War 2 for work that he did jointly with her is well known to physicists.

Jocelyn Bell's work on pulsars is also described. Bell's advisor would later garner the Nobel for this, though Bell made the crucial observations and deductions from those.

Both these chapters can be exercises in frustration to a reader. Injustices that were never remedied. Though Bell is still alive, and so there is a chance that the Nobel committe might redress this oversight.

Liberation in Hour-Long Chapters

Nobel Prize Women in Science is a superb collection of hour-long biographies of women who either won a Nobel Prize or worked on a project that won a Nobel Prize in science. The biographies are full of memorable vignettes and quotes and lucid explanations of the scientific discoveries. This reader found the book liberating because it debunked so many myths she had had about good scientists. This book makes great bedtime reading and excellent gifts for both men and women.

He has more than 40 years of experience in personal manuscript collection. His childhood hobby of genealogy initiated at age 11 became the catalyst and inspiration for his career as a professional archivist. He was graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Historic Preservation--Archives Studies--from Southeast Missouri State University in 1993, and is author and publisher of several books.

Mediocre self-published work...

David W. Jackson’s “Changing Times: Almanac and Digest of Kansas City's Gay and Lesbian History” is obviously a self-published work. From the first chapter to the last, you will find several spelling and grammar errors. It is also written in a very distracting informal tone. It reminded me of something one could find on Wikipedia. If you are interested in some aspect of Queer Kansas City history, you might like to start by reading this book, but make sure you verify everything.

Lisa Jensen has been a film critic for the Santa Cruz weekly Good Times for 25 years, as well as reviewing for Cinefantastique, Take One, Movie Collector's World, and Coast Weekly. She has appeared on Monterey Bay area TV ( "Talking Movies;" "The Golden Age of Television") and radio. For 13 years, Ms. Jensen was a book reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle; both the Chronicle and The Los Angeles Times published her feature articles. With her husband, artist James Carl Aschbacher, Ms. Jensen is a published cartoonist (Good Housekeeping, Saturday Evening Post). The Witch from the Sea is Ms. Jensen's first novel. An earlier version was published in German by List Press, Munich, under the title Die heimliche Piratin.

A fun read.

This first novel is well written, fast paced, vivid and an all over fun book to read. The time and place come to life as you sail the blue seas with unforgettable pirates that break away from the usual sterotypes. And there's romance as well. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Pirate Adventure Rather than Bodice Ripper

"Witch from the Sea" is not a pirate-themed "bodice ripper" but a "coming of age adventure story", with a spirited female adolescent lead character. Tory is a feisty orphaned runaway from a stuffy Boston girls school (she was sent there by her blue-blood Bostonian aunt who disapproved of her half-Indian blood). After she dons boy's clothing, and stows away on a ship leaving Boston Harbour, she is soon discovered and put to work learning the ropes as part of the merchant ship's crew.
Then comes the pirate attack. Tory betrays the location of the contraband silver in order to save a fellow crewman's life. Knowing she'd be no longer safe aboard the merchant vessel, she willingly joins up with the pirates. Till now, everyone had believed her to be a lad, but the pirates soon find out differently. Luckily, by the time that happens, she has taken the oath and signed articles with Capt. Hart, who thus proclaims her as a regular crewmember, despite her gender. Very few of the diverse, colorful crew is happy with a female aboard, but amidst the glares, harassment, and near disasters, she adapts to her new life, and manages to create a niche for herself.
The era is the 1820's, a time when many pirates were Cuban, and most Caribbean ports friendly to pirates are Spanish colonial backwaters. The U.S. Navy is determinedly tracking down all pirates. Capt. Hart, though Scottish himself, has a largely Cuban crew, with Spanish as the "official" language of the his ship. Tory (and the reader) quickly learns some important (and colorful) phrases in Spanish. And she learns much more - sailing, fighting, circus tumbling, and ... even love.
True ... while this is more of an adventure story, rather than a romance, it doesn't mean there aren't some passionate moments, and a love interest (after a stumbling false start).
While no Patrick O'Brian or C.S. Forester, author Lisa Jensen gives you enough of a feel of shipboard life, and swashbuckling action, along with a mix of grimy, seedy reality, that even the lads out there might enjoy this book.

Excellent Woman Pirate Tale!

I really enjoyed the tale of Tory Lightfoot and her coming of age on the high seas. Her story has a little bit of everything - adventure, humor, tragedy, romance, Shakespeare! We are swept into the story as she grows from the brave young girl who stole out of her private school in Boston to take to the seas, into a bold, young lady pirate. She learns to seek the things she wants, instead of leaving them to Fate and her wheel. Several things stick out as exceptional in this story... (1) The story keeps you interested until the very last paragraph - you're not sure how it's really going to end. (2) The author avoided all the pitfalls of making this into your average pirate romance (I don't want to give spoilers, but I was very pleased with the outcome of everything, and delighted to see it rise above the norm) (3) I was not expecting the humor, but the pirates were exactly as I would like to think many were! (4) This author didn't balk at the cruelty of the era, classes, races, nor life at sea - she gave you the details, even the terrible ones. (5) The heroine may have started out young and in over her head, fallible, but shes a real person - a very likeable heroine with a strong will that you can relate to.

Hoot Owl Shares the Dawn

This is the sweetest story I've ever read. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good, family-style story. Hoot Owl is my newest hero. I enjoyed the characters and the interesting twists & turns along the way. This story is pure joy ... I can't wait to read Ms. French's next novel ... perhaps a continuation of Johnny B. Falcon's adventures?
