What are wraps?

Wraps are a new breed of soft flatbread that joins its older and better-known cousins -- the tortilla and chapati and soft lavosh, to just name a few. Flatbreads are a staple in many cultures worldwide.

The idea is to "wrap" this lovely, pliable, semi-thin bread around anything your heart desires! You can also make wraps from almost anything you can imagine! Wraps can be slightly thicker than a tortilla or just as thin, depending on your preferences. I prefer my wraps slightly thicker than tortillas. Wraps are very pliable as well as very versatile. The fun of wraps is that they explore non-traditional tastes using a variety of grains, legumes, spices, fruits and vegetables.

To avoid terminology confusion, it should be said that "tortilla" may mean something different in Mexico, Texas, and New Mexico than a "wrap" means in Chicago. In India the "chapati" is the traditional bread not tortillas, although these are all similar flatbreads with some variations. These delicious, versatile, fun flatbreads can be simple and basic, or exotic and unusual, but the one thing they have in common is that they are FABULOUS!

I have included recipes for traditional corn and wheat tortillas but much more to spark your creativity. Wraps are exciting, versatile, and just plain fun! These are not your mother's tortillas! (Although your mom will just love 'em!)

Think of these wraps as "tortillas with chutzpah" (a Yiddish word meaning boldness). Don't be afraid to be creative and try new flavors and combinations!

Wraps are unleavened, which means no yeast or other leavening agents are used, so those with yeast allergies can use wraps instead of yeasted breads. In addition, those using homemade unleavened bread at home such as Matzah for Passover or for the Lord's Table can use these unleavened wraps. If you roll them thinner and cook them longer, your homemade matzah will be crisp like crackers. If you cook as directed for wraps, your matzah will be soft and pliable (as we prefer ours).

A Must-Have for Quick, Healthy Eating!

I've made my share of homemade whole wheat tortillas by hand, and all were as pliable as formica and shaped like the ink-blot pictures you see TV psychiatrists using! Using the directions from "Wrap It Up", my tortillas are soft, round and oh so delicious! But this is only one reason that I find "Wrap It Up" to be a must-have in my kitchen. Eating healthy and cooking quickly are important in our family, and the recipes in "Wrap It Up" make this possible. In a matter of minutes, I can make a batch of Flat Bagel Wraps, or Garlic Herb Wraps, for example, and have warm, fresh bread for a quick meal. I don't need to rely on my old standards of egg salad or peanut butter to fill them, either, with over 25 recipes for either fillings or entrees using the wraps included in the book. I especially like the fact that there are no "exotic" ingredients required for these recipes - I can make virtually any of the recipes without having to run to the store first. If quick, healthy cooking is what you're striving for, a copy of "Wrap It Up" will help you meet your goal in a most delicious way.

Wraps are becoming very popular these days, and now Vickilynn Haycraft makes it possible for you to make them at home! Vickilynn covers everything you would ever want to know about making wraps. She gives very thorough directions for making them by machine or by hand AND includes extra tips for storing, freezing, and reheating the wraps as well. Making a big batch of these and sticking them in the freezer makes entertaining a breeze later on. Everyone loves wraps!! But not only that, this book is packed with recipes for fillings. Some are traditional, but many are very unique and fun to say the least! Vickilynn's recipes will appeal to meat-eaters and to vegetarians, to those who love "home-cooking" and to those who prefer international tastes. Moms will also find this book full of "kid-pleasers" as well! One of the things I like most about this book is that Vickilynn has created all her recipes with health in mind, but does not sacrifice taste in doing so. The recipes work, and they are good! I highly recommend Wrap It Up!!

Tells it like it is..

The author does a great job of providing vivid descriptions and details about character, setting, and plot that bring the story to life. Through the plot of the book, Moore tackles many issues facing American Muslims today, and the takeaways are as simple or as complex as the reader wishes. Certain assumptions are made about the reader's familiarity with the complexity of the issues dealt with though, and for those who are ready to hear Moore out till the end of the book, the story can be a compelling and thought-provoking one. Definitely worth the read.

Short read ... great story

This is something refreshing for young adults everywhere. This book reminded me of the first time I read 'Of Mice and Men' because of it's length and good story line. I can't wait to share this with my daughter, who loves to read herself. After she finishes the book I want to have a discussion with her about the characters and the events in the story. It just reminded me of my teen years. Great work Ruby Moore and keep em comin! You've got a fan here...

Understanding Power

I found this book both informative and inspiring. This is a book rich in the dynamics of human relationships on the job, in power positions and the insights and information will work whatever your gender or race.
The examples of powerful people who share not only endurance, focus and ego, but also a tolerance for conflict, sensitivity, and flexibility made management seem less drone like and more human. . I think this is a direct result of being African American in corporate America, having to struggle against the status quo can develop character that does tolerate conflict, sensitivity and flexibility.
As a manager myself, I found the explanations of power: what is it? where does it come from?, and what do powerful people share? to be the most concise, understandable, applicable examples I have found.
This book is a quick read, well written and edited, with the opening chapters on Ambiguity, Managing Demons, Fitting In, "Reading " Unwritten Rules, and Making Your Mark leading to the chapters on Power: Understanding Power, Acquiring Power and Using Power for Leadership. Seeing the 6 basic kinds of power listed and defined (coercive, reward, legitimate, charismatic, associative, expert) clarified my own impressions and thoughts on the topic while allowing me to see cause and effect.
The Chapters on Acquiring Power and Using Power for Leadership demonstrate positive role modeling that others can use as a pattern for success.
The examples in the chapter on Race and Gender really hit home for me even though I am not African American. I have either been, or worked with people like the ones described in this book. They are wonderfully human and it is so fortunate for us that they are allowed to tell their stories in a warmly human way. I recommend this book to anyone interested in succeeding in Corporate America, or anywhere.

Some Advice On Leadership Never Grows Old-

It is strange to pick up Cobb's book after sharing a platform with him at Harvard Business School, and then to see him profiled in Ebony Magazine a few months later. Now two decades later, to read his excellent book on cracking the corporate code. Even now I use his book as one of the reference books in the Leadership Class I teach. It still boils down to being either liked, feared or respected to become the top executive; ideally a promising exceutive should be all three. Errol D. Great hiking in Feather River country

This review is based on the first edition from 2001. Tom DeMund, a resident of Graeagle, and an avid hiker, gets lots of credit for compiling these hikes. He took lots of notes, gives historic info. when warranted and includes info. on camping and winter use. I've probably hiked at least a dozen hikes from the book and appreciate the detailed descriptions along with the maps. Who knew there were so many little back roads to explore - Tom did! The number one hiking book specific to this region.

History and Nature Together is Awesome!

There is nothing more relaxing and fulfilling than exploring God's world, while at the same time learning about our state history. Tom DeMund does an excellent job describing the locations and directions for easy to strenuous hikes along the Feather River. The Feather River is incredible, and this book opens up the river for exploration. Read the book and then hike back in time while you soak up God's creation. Tom describes some beautiful country, and gives directions to some awesome mining camps and ghost towns.

Bones of the Earth, Spirit of the Land: The Sculpture of John Van Alstine will be of interest to working artists, as well as to all readers with an interest in contemporary art and the process of turning ideas into visual form. An extensive collection of color photographs (images of sculptures supplemented by drawings and landscape photographs, a less well-known aspect of his work) documents the evolution of Van Alstine's stone sculpture, from a smooth, polished Modernism to the aesthetic of raw, unfinished stone favored by Noguchi and the land-based Postminimalist strategies of Richard Serra. In the 1970s, he began assembling unworked stones, adding wood and metal to create works that respond to the landscape and allude to a narrative impulse beyond the rigors of form. His later works continue to synthesize stone and metal (the signature of Van Alstine's sculptural vocabulary), now throwing found objects, such as a fuel tank and anchor, into the mix. These recent sculptures move from a response to the landscape to an exploration of humanity's relation to the land through forms that evoke tools, vessels, and transport. The introductory essay by Nick Capasso reinforces the story told by the photographs, discussing the sculptures, public art commissions, and works on paper. Here we learn of Van Alstine's early memories of stone and his various personal experiences of the landscape-whether in the Adirondack Mountains of his childhood or in Laramie, Wyoming, where he taught in the `70s. Capasso provides a succinct and informative discussion, guided by the principle that for Van Alstine "stone is everything," and shows an acute sensitivity to the artist's feeling for his chosen materials and the nuanced changes in their treatment over the years. Van Alstine also has the opportunity to speak for himself in an interview with Glenn Harper, Editor of Sculpture magazine. (Another version of the interview appeared in the May 2000 issue of Sculpture.) In this illuminating discussion of materials, process, and content, the artist identifies key technical realizations and pivotal conceptual leaps behind the changes in his work. Harper draws out several fascinating explanations of the layered meanings underlying the abstractions and found objects in Sledge (1992) and Ara (1989). Bones of the Earth as a whole gives a detailed portrait of an artist committed to his materials, his craft, and his place in the real landscape. Its pages reveal Van Alstine's unique mediation between, in Capasso's words, "image, object, and place."

refreshing change

Just want to point out something I discovered when I bought this book ("Effective Self Hypnosis") and "self-hypnosis plain and simple" (same authors): These two books are nearly identical! The text is pretty much the same (I sampled several pages from various chapters, couldn't find a single difference), although the layout of some of the chapters is a little different. The main differences between the two:

-titles

-this book is hardcover, 'plain and simple' is paperback

-this book has photos (historical ones, iirc), the other one does not

-this book has a more stylized layout of the text, the other more plain

-this book comes with a tape (I didn't buy it with the tape, though)

Just writing this to make sure that people who are thinking of buying are aware of this. Since I couldn't figure out any significant differences, I gave one of the books to my dad ;)

(If Amazon doesn't think this type of information belongs in the review section, I agreed, but I don't know where else to post such info.)

As for my review: I find this book to be a refreshing change from most of the self-hypnosis books out there these days. There seems to be preciously few books that do not use the old standard "write your suggestions, memorize them, go into self-hypnosis and apply them" procedure, which really hasn't changed in the last 15-30 years or so (not to mention tonnes of rules or guidelines on how to write suggestions). Besides, what brought my attention to self-hypnosis in the first place were time-distortion and pain-control (If you have to endure shots and bloodsamples on a regular basis, this becomes really interesting), two things very few books teach properly, if at all). In this book you learn a much more adaptive approach, where instead of following a mechanical process to achieve things, you take advantage of the natural tendency of the mind to change from moment to moment, wandering here and there. And it's wonderfully free of all the "whoppedidooda-hey-hurray how great isn't self-hypnosis, and how misconcepted aren't people about this!" style of writing so common with so many authors. Instead of presenting self-hypnosis scripts which you may or may not be able to use, this book gives very simple and easy-to-follow instructions, in the form of short 'exercises' that help you learn what hypnosis is about. (This way you'll also be able to take advantage of self-hypnosis for other things than sitting in a chair thinking through memorized sequences of words and images).

That being said, you don't get consistent results unless you practice a few minutes now and then (daily?) over a period of weeks or months. I'll freely admit I'm not the most experienced self-hypnotist (the grand canyon of understatement), and I have yet to achieve many of the things taught in this book; meaning this review should not be taken as any kind of guarantee that the methods will work. Reading this book will not be a life-changing experience. But using the methods presented, perhaps it is possible, over time, to change one bit here and there. ;)

And thank God (figure of speech, I'm an atheist) this book doesn't have "Quit smoking! Make more money! Experience perfect health! Get the life YOU want!" written all over it. No, it's not possible to guarantee that you can have the life you want, and you may actually not succeed in quitting smoking in as little as a few months/weeks, even with the best available resources. No, you can't loose 200 pounds of excess fat easily; it takes years upon years. No you won't become a millionaire just because you combine "'how to become rich' for dummies" with hypnosis (though if you write a book on self-hypnosis, and riddle it with over-optimistic statements, you can at least add a little to you income). People are different. For most of us 'Good things take Time'. This book doesn't try to sell itself by saying otherwise.

I give it a solid 4 stars. (Why not 5? Because perfection is a hard thing to achieve, and I'd like to have an extra star in case I finally find that one special life-changing book...)

Interesting reading---and it worked!!

I found this book and CD combination to be very informative. I learned a great deal about hypnosis, its background, and theories. There were many inspiring case reports that showed how hypnosis helps. I found them fascinating. But what I really liked is that by reading the book and listening to the CD, I gained a real skill with hypnosis. Self-hypnosis helped me in many ways. The method presented gave me concrete tools to make some changes, and it seems to be sticking! I liked that the exercises were doable and felt natural. I also found the explanations clear. Also, I didn't have to read the book cover to cover to start seeing changes. I could skip to sections that seemed most relevant for me. Over time, I have actually read the whole book and I enjoyed doing so. This book and CD has everything you need to personalize your self-hypnosis experience and get results. I highly recommend this book and CD.

These authors are perhaps best known for their book entitled 'Principles of Self Hypnosis' (now out of print) which for many years was the most regularly recommended primer on this subject. This academic work completely updates the former book and adds much new research to the subject area. It is very extensive in nature and written in a style that facilitates access to both the professional and the lay person wishing to use self hypnosis for their own benefit. The book is accompanied by an excellent audiotape which clearly demonstrates many of the techniques described in the book. Whilst appearing a little expensive when compared with other self hypnosis books, this book and audiotape (Available separately as Steps to Self Hypnosis) can definitely claim to be 'top of the pile' in quality of content, research and writing style.

George R. Jezek, is a native San Diegan and a professional photographer with a B.A. from the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. He developed the idea for San Diego Then & Now after attending a lecture on western ghost towns and began researching and identifying interesting historical photos from the San Diego Historical Society archives. He then sought out the locations where the images were taken decades ago in order to capture in beautiful full color a record of the sites as they are today.

My review of San Diego

I tend to buy the books "past and present" because I am a model builder and these books often give me good ideas about many of the cities I am interested in both for historical and geographical purposes.

I ordered the book on San Diego because I had a very old book about the city that was badly outdated and I was curious to see how the city had changed from "then". I have never been to San Diego so my knowledge of it was minimal.

This book is an excellent book about the city. It is beautifully illustrated and the contrasts between then and now stunning. The photographer did an excellent job of matching up the areas of the photos. If you are interested in getting an excellent book about San Diego I believe you will be pleased with this book.

My only complaint, and it is a minor one, is that the book is written by the perspective of an "insider" and they talk about places like everybody knows the area they are talking about. To an outsider like myself you are left a bit mystified because you don't really get an idea where some of the places are. "IF" the book had a map showing numbers where each photo was taken that would give you a great idea of the areas but sadly that is not the case. In spite of this, if you are looking for an excellent photo book of San Diego you will not be disappointed with this book.

Very intresting historical perspective

I got this primarily as a picture book - I lived several places over the years in San Diego county. I saw the book at a boutique during a visit and put it on my wife's gift list. Very happy I decided to purchase. The pictures tell a very interesting story, but the descriptions and historical vignettes are well-researched and are the gem in this book. If you like this region's history - or just like seeing before and now picture comparisons, this is an excellent source. Highly recommended.

About the Author

André Vanasse obtained a Ph.D. in literature from the Université de Paris-Vincennes. He is vice-chairman and editorial director of XYZ éditeur. He is directs the Romanichels and the étoiles variables collections, and is editor of the literary magazine Lettres Québécoises. André also writes novels and essays.

"how to" without "why" - should be "booklet", not "encyclopedia"

The book starts off with lots of wonderful detail - amounts of tannin in different parts of the grape, then rapidly turns into repetitively describing the steps in winemaking without explaining much of anything - this is a "cookbook" text, and after you read and use it you will only know how to follow the recipe in the book. For example, there is almost no discussion of the varieties of yeast and their effects on flavor, no recommendations for yeast types, no discussion of the effects of temperature on fermentation, etc. etc.

I suspect the book started out as a set of instructions that were written to go with a wine making kit, and the tale grew in the telling, but without adding too much content.

Sections of the book are written in a condescending tone - I assume this is a translation problem, but in any case the editor(s) should have fixed this. The authors clearly have had traumatic encounters with wine makers who didn't like to use chemicals and / or who favored using wild yeast, these are important topics and should be discussed ONCE each, again I fault the editor.

Either the author is unaware that quality wine being made outside of Europe, or else the book is simply too dated. The basic drift of the book is that you aren't likely to get great grapes so your wine won't be that good, but you can have fun following the recipe and make drinkable wine, particularly if you live somewhere where you can buy 'must' from the vendor they recommend.

It does include a nice list of grape varietals in the back. It does generally have good photos, and clear instructions, but simply isn't worth the purchase price, and in no way merits the term 'encyclopedia' - it would edit down nicely into a 20 page booklet.

Moderately useful for a beginner

I started making wine at home several years ago and purchased this book as a handy home reference. I'd have to say this it is a mixed bag. Despite the title, this is not really an encyclopedia of home winemaking, but rather a reference for beginners. It would be an interesting and somewhat useful addition to your library if you are starting to make your own wine, but you'll be able to make drinkable wines without it. It is of little or no value to an intermediate or advanced home winemaker. There are eight chapters in this book. The first several describe the biology of the grapes and the chemistry of the fermentation process. Subsequent chapters present the basic winemaking equipment, the choice of must (concentrated, fresh, or juice), and basic techniques. The final two chapters outline measurement techniques (e.g. how to use the hydrometer to measure density) and different types of grape juice available to the home winemaker. Once you've made a few batches of wine, your knowledge will far exceed that in this book, and most of what you need to know to get started can be learned by talking with other knowledgable people. You aren't going to learn anything profound from this book. One caveat I should mention is that if you are making wine by crushing and squeezing grapes (as opposed to the concentrate kits or fresh must), this book is woefully inadequate and you should definitely look elsewhere. Overall, a decent reference for a beginner, but you can certainly get by without it.

I don'[t have the time or interest in making wine ...

I don'[t have the time or interest in making wine, I only purchased this book to learn the process and about ingredients. I am trying to manage my food allergies and unfortunately, wine bottles don't list ingredients. Same with liquors. Why not list ingredients for those of us with allergies to potatoes (Vodka with or with grain?), grains (Whisky with just corn or with other grains and what sweetners?) , certain sweetners, etc?

You won't get a fair review due to my interest level in getting the book.
