Nonfiction. Literary Criticism. Poetics.BOXING INSIDE THE BOX is a creative/critical work proposing "women's prose poetry" as a form distinct from that widely touted as "definitive" in journals, anthologies and critical texts. Iglesias believes that the shape of prose poems--a simple box--serves as a powerful metaphor for gender roles that constrain and contain women. Unlike most of their male counterparts who produce disembodied, ironic and surrealist prose poems, women write from within this genre-defiant box works that are at once lyrical and embattled, sensual and menacing.

Holly Iglesias deserves a wide readership
By cbjones1943
Among feminist poets writing today, Holly Iglesias is one of my favorites and is, also, one of the best feminist poets of her generation, certain to be compared and contrasted to Adrienne Rich in future critical studies. To my knowledge, Iglesias' output includes this non-traditional critical work and several collections of prose poetry. I consider her recent chapbook, Fruta Bomba, to be a mature example of feminist poetry and of the prose poem genre. At her best, Iglesias' poems stun in their ability to combine "color" and music with theme in a manner that restrains the potential for theme [politics, sociology, or journalism] to overwhelm lyric, meter, and other Formalist conceits. This effect is very difficult to "pull off" and is a balance that Adrienne, America's foremost feminist poet to date, does not achieve in many of her poems, leaving Rich vulnerable to negative evaluation by many critics, including, [hetero-normative] feminist critics. Boxing Inside The Box is both satisfying and unsatisfying. The book, experimental/innovative in form, language, and content, begins with what i would categorize as a scholarly treatise on the prose poem. Amply researched, i was introduced to academic treatments of the form as well as to familiar and unfamiliar [to me] practitioners of the prose poem. Iglesias demonstrates that prose poetry can be traced back at least to the 10th century [900s], and she provides numerous additional details and contexts, with an emphasis on contemporary female prose poets. Iglesias' conceptual framework employs the prose poem as a metaphor for the feminine condition of containment and a "box" from which women break free. As long as i was willing to work with Iglesias' paradigm, her template and documentation provided a refreshing way to interpret the goals and status of prose poetry by females. However, at more than one point in her text, Iglesias points out that the prose poem was not employed by women poets as a tool of liberation, and one wishes that the author had incorporated these examples and their possible lessons into her discussion. Another discomforting thought that competed with my ability to adopt Iglesias' paradigm [aesthetic?] as definitive, is the obvious observation that a "box" might, also, be a coffin or a cage or might represent a domicile to which so many voiceless or counter-revolutionary women are confined. Unfortunately, Iglesias' poems and, in this case, prose, often leave me feeling that her writing is unfinished, possibly, hurried. I am usually hungry for more, much more...not so much a longer composition, but a richer one that convinces me that the writer cares more about her subject and, by extension, about her reader. Boxing Inside The Box almost "lost" me after page 65 when Iglesias' "voice" switches from relatively academic to relatively Impressionistic. I needed a "bridge" between the two treatments, even though the seemingly discontinuous writing may have been intended to "disrupt". I am still reflecting on this "break"; however, as of this moment, i am of the opinion that i, the reader, deserved more "signs" from the author about how the text after page 65 related to her previous text. The book after p 65 seems to me to be a collage of, sometimes, disparate, quotations and statements, and i was, for the most part, unclear when Iglesias, herself, was the speaker or whether any of the material was hers at all. Is this a conceit? Does this apparently intentional confusion represent a trope "privileging negativity" in the manner of some "political queers"? Is the method Iglesias' way of telling me she is not really serious about what she is saying or that she is not willing to put in the work to make connections, and, her ideas, clear throughout the book? Is the disjunction [or what i interpret as a disjunction] a [clever?] metaphor for a chasm that women must cross before authentic expression of their identity and sexuality? i am unclear, and, possibly, that is the point...surely, this book is one that i will return to and continue to think about, and, as a Project, i find it more understandable if i view this book as one long prose poem rather than a book of literary criticism. Is this what Iglesias intended? Finally, there are many, many provocative comments and quotes that Iglesias does not explore and that i wish she had explored in this or subsequent publications. If Boxing Inside The Box is, fundamentally, a book of literary criticism, i want to know what Iglesias means when, in the context of her prose poem paradigm, she quotes Susan Griffin: "Theory pales when faced with the complex world of experience." [p109]. I am not looking for Iglesias to tell me what to think; but, i desperately want to know what SHE thinks about all the statements she documents. In a sense, my disappointments attest to how high my esteem is for Iglesias' writing and intelligence. I have learned a lot from her and want to read more. But, maybe that is Iglesias point. Maybe she has led me to the path[s] of discovery that i must explore on my own. Maybe Iglesias is telling me that i am a grown-up who must do her own work, pull her own weight, unpack her own baggage. In any event, Boxing Inside The Box was a pleasure to read, and I recommend it to anyone interested in a treatment of the prose poem from a female-centered perspective. It is my understanding that Iglesias is working on another book. I look forward to reading it.
