About the Author
Born and raised in New York City's Fifth Borough of Staten Island, Tracy Brown is a triple threat to the literary industry. This poet, writer and spoken word performer discovered her love of writing in her early youth. After graduating high school, Tracy attended Manhattan's John Jay College of Criminal Justice where she studied law. Embarking on a career as a legal accountant for one of NYC's most prestigious law firms, soon Tracy turned her interest back toward her writings. The result of Tracy's dedication to writing is her debut novel, and jewel in the TCP Crown, ''Black.'' Tracy caught Triple Crown's eye when she submitted the first chapter of her novel for inclusion in the anthology, ''The Game.'' Teasing readers with this appetizer, TCP felt it only fair to give its readers the full course meal, and soon enough Tracy was offered a book deal. In ''Black'' Tracy provides her readers with a front and center view of how street life shapes and molds the life of a young black girl. As the mother of three children, Tracy's concern for the future of inner city youth has been a subject often explored in her work. Tracy Brown continues to reside in Staten Island, where she is at work on her sophomore novel.

Love this story

My first time reading this was back in 2005 I got it from the library and I was so pleased with it. I love the range of emotions it sent me through. I loved the fact that a lot of things I could relate to. I was so elated when I was able to find and read this book again. It's like watching a movie. The detail of each character made me feel like I knew them personally and I was there going threw it to. When a book is really good I hate when it ends but this ending will suffice. Great book Tracy I loved it

Life Lessons Are Often Learned Too Late

Tracy Browns novel Black is an excellent read of learning life lessons and moving on.
The plot of friends that were so different yet so alike in this novel will capture you and keep you wanting to read to the very end. It is a tale of love, life, and friendship.
Symphony, a young black female whose mother was raising two kids on her own and thought as long as she gave them everything she could in materialistic form that she could believed that she was doing the right thing by her children. She believed that this is what made her a good parent. However, Symphony didn't see it that way. Moving out at a very young age she found herself in a life of drugs and money.
Kaia, a girl whom after her father was killed felt that she was facing the world by herself, finds not only love by family. She has to deal with one drama filled issue after another to find that all she really needed was to love herself. She had to learn the lesson that you can't make anyone love you and just because they don't tell you don't mean that don't.
These girls go through one situation after another holding each other's hand through life. Teaching one another what true love and family is really made of. Their plights were so different and they were each others strength to make it through. And as time would have it one of them expired before the other was ready to let go.
Ms Brown did a wonderful job with her characters. Toward the end of this well written sad story life seems to come together for one of the young ladies after dealing with the death of another. Black is not only a fast read but also it will make you think and will touch you with the sadness. Pick up Black and you won't be able to put it down. Even thought the beginning was a little slow it picked up and took you on an emotional rollercoaster. I would recommend this book to young girls dealing with relationship issues.

This book takes readers on an emotional journey with Kaia. From her friends 17 year Kaia get love and affection but from the one person that mean the most her mother she gets beaten and belittled. Her life seems like a never ending battle that is until she meets Aaron a local hood boy who's had a crush on Kaia for years.
Aaron show her what unconditional love really is and once she has it she never wants to let it go. when Aaron has to do a 4 year bid their relationship will be tested and friendships will be lost because Jealousy and Envy. They always say keep your friends close and you enemies closer but what do you when your enemy is a chameleon.
This book will have you crying, laughing and ready to fight. Tracy Brown does a wonderful job on her debut novel. I gave it Five Stars
