In this far-reaching, extensively researched, scholarly work, psychiatrist Charles Konia, M.D. makes the first comprehensive exploration and development of the concepts first published in Wilhelm Reich's 1933 The Mass Psychology of Fascism. Dr. Konia's groundbreaking, highly original book examines from a unique, non-psychological perspective this pathology in human nature that has given us the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, an Saddam Hussein. This book will open your eyes to why every "great" social program failed in its original mission; why America is increasingly hated throughout the world; why a handful of despotic leaders can enslave millions of people; and why standards of decency and excellence continue to decline.

Psychiatrist Konia has been a practicing Reichian therapist for over 40 years. Taking his title from a term coined by Wilhelm Reich, Konia argues that in the current "emotional plague" there is a mass "displacement of intra-psychic conflicts of armored people onto the social and political sphere." To put it another way, Konia believes that what Freud saw as normal human defenses are, in the 21st century, growing out of control. It is happening because of the dominance of an overly mechanistic view of human life, where the function of human life is reduced to its bodily mechanics, and all individuals are seen as interchangeably made to serve the same meaningless ends. One result, Konia argues, is a reactionary mysticism, one that, he says, feeds everything from alternative medicine to jihadist Islamism. In chapters including "Freedom, Responsibility and Sociopolitical Ideology" and "Democracy in Armored Society: Formal Democracy versus Work Democracy," Konia shows the macro effects of "armored society"-a humanity splintered into groups in conflict-in detail. By way of a solution, Konia argues for a recognition of a "biological core" than unites humanity in need, and in differences. While Konia's discussion can get fairly technical, it is passionate and engaged throughout.

Compelling Read
By Stephen Wahrhaftig
This book carefully explains the root causes for the misery caused by evil actions in societies all over the world. While book lists are loaded with apologies for actions taken by criminals, The Emotional Plague goes directly to the emotional reasons for these problems. This is not a book about terrorism per se. Rather it is about how we are all affected by the emotional illness of society in ways big and small. Well researched and well argued, this book is one that I have bought for friends to read.

Oh, no...!
By Robert Jene Amick
The thing about it is I've studied Dr. Reich's theories since 1980 and have gone over them enough that I can see that I'm not a detached observer of neurosis and the emotional plague no matter how enlightened I'd like to think of myself as being. But after much study I do like to think I have a sort of feeling about what Dr. Reich work is about. And I am having trouble fitting this book to Dr. Reich's work. I will just make one point and I won't try to convert the unconvinced. Many of the assumptions in the book are, at least to me, mind-blowing - and not in a good way. Given that NHS studies in Britain have concluded that the most damaging drug is alcohol even when compared to heroin and cocaine it seems that ideas like the following are hopeless. Page 391: "Moderate use of alcohol usually has no negative effect on social functioning. (Footnote: Alcohol metabolized into water and carbon dioxide and contains none of the complex fat-soluble organic compounds found in marijuana.) Even immoderate use of alcohol does not threaten the integrity of America as a nation. Marijuana, even "in moderation" is a real threat to the nation's integrity, just as slavery and secession were." First, to suggest that alcohol's OK because it metabolizes into water and carbon dioxide reveals an ignorance so vast it boggles the mind... well, it does mine. Alcohol is more likely to metabolize to aldehydes - so much for the author's education - I don't suppose he stopped to wonder why hang-overs happen! His extensive (obsessive might be a better word) comparison of the War on Drugs to the American Civil War is hard to understand and his conclusions that the solution is the relentless incarceration of both suppliers and users could reasonably be used as an example of the social and individual damage done by the self-righteous do-gooders who are the carriers of the Emotion Plague. This is upsetting because the Emotional Plague as Reich describes it is a critical and essentially unrecognized source of much of the human dilemma and there are very few if any works explaining the subject. To bring this review to a point: Konia's grasp of Reich's work is grossly superficial and apparently twisted beyond recognition to support what I will have to say is Konia's Emotion Plague infested pre-conceptions. If you read this book instead of going to Reich's publications please don't believe you've learned anything useful of the Emotional Plague. Reich predicted that people would grab his work without understanding it and twist it to their own narrow vision of the human potential and neurotic agenda for social regimentation... and I sincerely feel that this book is what he was worried about. Its a darned shame, really. Post Script: I gave it one star because you have to use Amazon's scale and zero stars isn't an option.
I've edited in this additional P.S. in consideration of those who might not see alcohol metabolism and marijuana policy as deciding factors. In the forward to the book the author states the armor "functions to change primary core impulses into secondary drives that are socially destructive" but four sentences later he states the "(a)rmor functions like a prison. It protects both the armored individual and society by blocking the breakthrough of destructive...emotions...". One may ask which is it? ...the source of damaging impulses or the protection from them. It can't be both, can it? (Hint: it is the source of... what it protects the individual from is dissolving pleasure. The condition of being "up-tight" is slang for being armored). In the next sentence the author writes that not only people may be armored but "society and social institutions may also be referred to as armored..." as if they were things in themself and not simply a collection of armored individuals. And that is just fuzzy thinking; a trend which seems to set the tone of the whole book. It would be possible to go through the book chapter at a time and list the apparently poorly understood or the just plain wrong; but it would be an extensive project. Reich explains his concept quite well enough - save your money a get a copy of his Character Analysis and read his own exposition of the Emotional Plague found in that book as this book does nothing to improve Reich's own description but rather compromises the concept in confounding ways.

Profound!
By Edward Chastka
If you believe that "No Child Left Behind" solved the problems with our system of public education; if you believe that HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act) improves the delivery of our medical care, if you think that giving poor people free housing and food stamps solves the problem of poverty, then you will not understand this book.
An armored society raises armored children who grow up to become armored adults. Armoring is the mark that this kind of upbringing makes on us, it distorts our development and represses the natural expression of our emotions. Armored people are different: their perceptions; their thinking and their feeling become twisted in passing through the armor, and when armored people act politically on these twisted perceptions, thoughts and feelings, it is always destructive. Mankind has been stumbling around in this trap for thousands of years, and finally someone is turning on the light.
This revolutionary book explains, more clearly and more completely than ever before, the development of this destructive plague and its disastrous consequences. Dr. Konia gives us hope that if we can only see the problem for what it is, we can begin to fight it effectively.
