I had long awaited a book that resisted all parallels with other books save the use of ink and type: a book through which I might wander, losing myself in labyrinths and coming upon fantastic citadels to which I could not retrace my steps; a book into which I might plunge, skipping pages as a little girl skips rope, never to return to the world in which I d began emerging instead in another, or at least equipped to build one. --B. At first glance, it appears to be a collage of memoirs and polemics, but don t be fooled: what they re really doing here is telling the creation myth backwards as the symmetrical conclusion to the history of the world. Escaping exile in an alien dystopia, human beings storm paradise and, upon reentering, tear off their clothes without shame. God s judgment is overturned, nonsense is unlearned, a woman presents an apple to a snake, symbolizing the release of nature from the yoke of human will. Genders cease to be rigidly defined, each person becoming a complete unity of masculine and feminine characteristics. Finally, in only seven days time, the entirety of the old world is unmade, and on the last evening the lights of all cities, no longer powered by vast unsustainable infrastructures, blink out one by one. --Greil Marcus

Sometimes Brilliant, Sometimes Pathetically Juvenile

If you have just recently become interested in the CrimethInc movement, I would suggest reading "Days of War, Nights of Love." The exhilaration expressed in that book is carried over to, "Expect Resistance," but there isn't much new ground covered. The book is technically well written with beautiful and poetic descriptions and declarations, but most of the time, it is hard to figure out which of the main characters is narrating. This leads to a disjointed and hard to follow story. This book does well at passing on an excited love for life. It makes you feel that there must be something more to life than earning money and finding jobs. The book inspires you to make changes that will transform your life into an adventure! The other half of the book is ridiculously silly. The author's disdain for the middle and upper class, police, religion, and the United States is old and cliched.
Overall, "Expect Resistance," conveys such a sense of longing and inspiration to set things right, that it is sometimes an inspiring read. Most of the time, however, the author's own ignorance and prejudice regarding the so-called "oppressors" of society reveals a hypocritical and embarrassingly juvenile approach to looking at the world. It leaves you with the impression that the people participating in CrimethInc are selfish, hateful, and care more about the thrill of rioting than the cause they are fighting for in the first place.

passionate, powerful

I'm very familiar with the CrimethInc Collective's works, and in my opinion this is by far the best. It is a lot more well written and poetic than Days of War, Nights of Love. I had been waiting this book for sometime and I didn't expect it to be this impressive. It's a down to earth, extremely inclusive view of living day to day as an anarchist. Expect Resistance is also much more practical than many works dealing with more abstract ideas of anarchist philosophy. Young or Old this book is very accessible, and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting solid, practical, introduction to anarchy. Don't order it from Amazon, get it direct from CrimethInc, and go ahead and get Recipes for Disaster while your at it. Get off the internet, and start living.

Some lovely ideas buuuut

The book contained some lovely ideas but was too heavily "us vs. them" in structure.
Additionally, it is highly propagandistic.
A lot of the sentences, if read critically, did not make sense logically. They are nonsensical, ripe with presumptive pronouns, appealing to the ego of the reader who is presumed (by the writer) to be caught up in the emotional whirlwind created by assertions like "we" are "fighting a war against war" (actual quote)).
To its' credit, the book had a few pages that made me feel warm and fuzzy inside, namely the series of pages surrounding the spiral that characterized fear as the center of a tightly wound spiral, the outermost edge of which was love, which suggested the expansive properties of love as opposed to the tightly coiled nature of fear.
All in all, it was an entertaining read; however dichotomous and propagandistic it was, it still contained a few morsels of truth.
